West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

Again Melbourne - a decade in the wildernesss from tanking and the afl having to step in.

Which had nothing to do with tanking and everything to do with taking the wrong players. If Melbourne hadn't tanked and ended up with the exact same players, their position would not have changed.

How did they end up getting out of that rut? By nailing 3 top 4 draft picks. They don't take Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw, they don't win a flag. Ultra high end talent is essential for 9/10 flag teams.

Without the afl intervention they would still have done f/a

Melbourne constantly dropped tiny kids into their midfield where they got monstered and lost their confidence. Those kids could have been anything if they had been bought up in a club that knew how to develop kids

Think you're using hindsight there. Melbourne drafted the kids generally regarded as the best at the time. Their development sucked because the kids were being asked to do too much too early as a result of tanking and because of a losing culture. When kids keep losing, when their teammates aren't trying their best, it's easy to drop your head and then that elite edge you need is gone. If they had drafted Martin and Bont instead of who they picked, it's entirely possible we would be talking about them as players that never lived up to their talent while Scully and Trengrove are guiding other teams to flags.

They can't get one when they only won a flag in 2018 IMO.

Harley Reid is going to make it easier to attract some free agents and the Eagles are better off going down that path.

There's nothing wrong with using hindsight to analyze something. It's the job of the experts and professional to use foresight. When Pendlebury was taken at 5, a lot of the professionals laughed thinking it was too early. That's what separates good list builders from bad ones.

Moloney, Green, Jamar, Bruce, McDonald, Rivers, Silva, Jones, Davey were all there the year after Scully, Trengove and Gawn had been drafted. The year after was when Gold Coast and GWS were coming in and there were going to be no high draft picks for 3 seasons. They got rid of a lot of those players. That occurred after they had tanked. There was no draft gain during that period. That's just horrendous list management. Entirely separate issue.

It wasn't the fact that kids were doing too much, too early. The Melbourne team that rolled out most of that year, average about 23 and 8 months, were older than Martin's Richmond most weeks, whose development was leading them to a dynasty. Melbourne won 4 more games than Richmond did over the first two years of Martin and Scully's careers. Meanwhile Martin was already dominating like Reid is. They just took the wrong kids.

I am thinking the same way. We may even attract more returning West Aussies. Mind you Freo do have some decent picks to throw around.
