They're rapidly going the way of Kenya. Hopefully some other country rises up in their place. Although I guess Afghanistan and Ireland have already kinda done that.
Netherlands and Scotland were strong at the qualifiers so hopefully they push on. Scotland actually have some serious talent.

Zimbabwe have been reasonably good recently? Topped their group at the 1st stage of the T20 World Cup and then beat Pakistan in the super 12s. Then played the best cricket outside SL at the ODI qualifiers and only missed out on the World Cup due to NRR.

They won't (probably ever) reach the quality of what the had around the late 90s/early 2000s but they're a team who are somewhere between the 9th and 14th best side in the World and they play that way. The most competitive international cricket at the moment is played between teams ranked 8 to about 15 (say WI, Ban, Afg, Zim, Ire, Sco, Ned, Nam).

Ireland have looked much worse than Zimbabwe recently. Barely scrapped past Italy in qualifying for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe have been reliant on 2 or 3 players who are all now in their late 30's

2 more teams to qualify from the Africa qualifiers (Nov 22 to Nov 30) to finalise the 20 competing teams.
(2 of Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe)

We might have to start talking about England in this thread shortly.

If you can't make the champions trophy you really are close to associate status.

You'd imagine one of Zimbabwe and Kenya/Namibia (hopefully the latter) but fk it'd be good to have one of the other four teams randomly make it.
Namibia are arguably a better T20 team than Zimbabwe. It would be a massive shock if Kenya qualified in front of them.

It's even arguable that Uganda are a better team than Kenya. Uganda and Kenya have played 9 times since September 2021 and Uganda have won 6 of them. Hell Tanzania even have a winning record against Kenya.

I didn't realise Kenya had fallen so far. That's insane.

There's a lot of potential in those East African countries. On the women's side, they've played a regular tournament for a number of years in Rwanda, and both Uganda and Nigeria have played in the men's under 19s World Cup in recent years.

Following on from this, Namibia just pumped Zimbabwe in the first match of the qualifiers. They chased 133 with 7 wickets and 38 balls remaining. Nik Davin made 89* (45).

Kenya beat Rwanda by 17 runs but a bloke by the name of Martin Akayezu nearly got Rwanda home with a 9-ball 30. Amazingly he averaged 7.72 at a strike rate of 102 from 58 matches before this innings.

It gives you an idea of how much cricket these nations are now playing as Akayezu has just turned 21 debuted for Rwanda in 2021 but has already played 59 T20Is.

Rwanda are also probably the worst team at these qualifiers (They're 2W 15L v Tanzania and 0W 16L v Uganda) so that's got to be alarm bells for Kenya.

Collins Obuya still chugging along at the age of 42. The same Collins Obuya who took 5 wickets against SL at the 2003 world cup.

He's playing against Nigeria at the moment who just happen to be coached by fellow Kenyan great from the 2003 World Cup Steve Tikolo.

The father, the son, and the Holy Spirit (Kennedy Otieno) of Kenyan cricket as I remember it
My favourite from that team was Aasif Karim, the Master of Mombasa. He was MOTM v Australia as a 39yo for 8.2 over 6 maidens 3 for 7. He had 8 overs 3/2 but his last over went 1,4.

Jarrod Kimber wrote one of the great pieces of cricket writing about him:

Brilliant article, well worth a read.

Also a few hints in there as to why Kenyan cricket fell away after that.

As brilliant and uplifting as it is sad. Wonderfully written

looks like Namibia and Kenya have almost booked their spots, unless they both fall in a heap.

would love to see kenya qualify and back in the fold.

they do still have namibia and zimbabwe to play though and this tournament was always going to see 2 of zimbabwe, kenya, namibia qualify.
