I suspect it's something to do with preventing scams and such, or at least giving them a veneer of reasons not to have to pay you back. Plus the money laundering / funding terrorism thingy for transactions above $10k already exists so it might just be a box they need to complete in their system.

A quick google search seems to suggest you don't really have to answer it if you don't want to, though all transactions > $10k are reported to AUSTRAC

Yeah thats weird, been a good long while since I withdrew cash at a bank but can't remember ever being asked what it was for.

Although it was probably never more than $3 or $4k now I think about it.

Interestingly a male produces sperm constantly so conditions which can be passed on genetically can happen any time.
Whereas female eggs are produced at puberty, so only conditions acquired before that can be passed down to offspring
