Dozens of potential buyers express interest in Perth Glory as receivers advance on October sale

Perth Glory’s receivers have received more than two dozen expressions of interest in the A-League soccer club as they work towards finalising a sale before the new men’s season gets underway in October.

KordaMentha, which was put into Glory on July 21 after the league’s management body revoked Tony Sage’s licence, are seeking non-binding indicative offers by the close of business on August 25.

The offers will then be whittled down into a short list of bidders who will be given 3-4 weeks to undertake due diligence.

Potential buyers have been told that the sale is a rare opportunity to buy one of only 12 A-League clubs in the country and ride the growth of soccer in WA.

“With more than 230,000 participants throughout affiliate football programs in WA, Perth Glory is in a unique position to capitalise on the sport’s burgeoning growth,” the receivers told interested parties who had requested an information memorandum.

“Perth Glory is a club that represents a city, a State and proudly parochial population.”

The potential buyers include a syndicate of WA football identities and investors backed by former Glory Nick Tana.

The successful bidder will have to be approved by the Australian Professional Leagues, which manages the A-League, and Football Australia, and its backers deemed to be “fit and proper” people to own a sporting club.

The indicative offers are required to detail purchase price, the background of the bidder, its strategic rationale and plans for Glory, financial position and funding sources.

Short-listed bidders will then be given access to an electronic dataroom and Glory and APL management.

During the receivership, which affects part of Mr Sage’s Okewood Pty Ltd, Glory management led by chief executive Anthony Radich have run the club on a business-as-usual basis.

That was demonstrated by the appointment of new men’s coach Alan Stajcic nearly two weeks ago.

Australian property developer and Catania SC president Ross Pelligra among bidders for Perth Glory

A bid headed by the president of Italian Serie C outfit Catania FC is among the non-binding offers tabled for Perth Glory as the deadline for the sale of the club nears.

Property developer Ross Pelligra has thrown his hat into the ring for the A-Leagues club, which has been without an owner since long-time chairman Tony Sage handed back his licence in July.

With the club currently in the hands of receivers KordaMentha, the deadline for non-binding indicative offers ends at the close of business on Friday.

And Pelligra, the east coast-born property developer who has overseen the revival of former Serie A outfit Catania, is part of one of several bids which has been submitted to the receivers

The West Australian understands former Socceroo and Perth product Stan Lazaridis and Football West chairman Liam Twigger would be brought into the fold in the event of a successful bid, while other members linked to the bid have connections within the game at state level.

It is also understood the group has a strong interest in the grassroots game and would be keen to ensure Glory had a harmonious relationship with local clubs.

Pelligra’s vice-chairman at Catania is another former Socceroo Vince Grella, who previously worked as an agent before taking up a role at Catania, and Grella would also be involved at Perth if the bid is successful.

In addition to Catania, Pelligra also has financial links to Adelaide Giants in the Australian Baseball League, Adelaide Lightning in the WNBL.

He was also previously linked to fellow A-Leagues club Adelaide United, but was also involved in a mooted bid which attempted to push former National Soccer League giants South Melbourne into the A-League.

Pelligra told FTBL he wanted to restore the glory days to Perth.

“We’re very serious about this and have put in a bid and we’ll see where it ends up, I guess,” he said.

“There is a big community of football people in Perth, I believe they’ll come out and support the club and there’s an opportunity there to unite the city around this club.

“I see how strong the football culture is in Perth and there’s a lot to build on if we’re chosen as the preferred bidder.”

It has been a tumultuous off-season for the Glory, with Sage departing after more than a decade at the helm as owner, while men’s coach Ruben Zadkovich also resigned.

However, with clarity to be provided in the coming weeks in regards to ownership and experienced former Matildas, Central Coast Mariners and Philippines women coach Alen Stajcic brought in as men’s coach, it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Catania supremo player faces fight for Glory

The sale of Perth Glory is heading to a gran finale, with receivers from KordaMentha looking over five offers for the A-League soccer club.

One of those is a WA-backed bid headed by Melbourne property developer Ross Pelligra, who chose to publicise his interest last month.

Pelligra, president of Italian Serie C club Catania, talked up what he and his partners could offer Glory.

Glory’s franchise licence was pulled from owner Tony Sage by the A-League management body Australian Professional Leagues in July.

But the Bull understands Pelligra is facing stiff competition for the Perth franchise, with other bids offering a better price.

KordaMentha aims to have the auction completed before the opening of the new men’s season next month.

Sold, to the gentleman in the cute top!

A-League club Perth Glory’s new owner unveiled as Primeland chairman Robert Brij on eve of new season

A new era is set to begin at Perth Glory, with Melbourne-based property mogul Robert Brij about to be unveiled as the A-Leagues’ side’s new owner.

The club and the Australian Professional Leagues — the A-Leagues’ governing body — are set to confirm Brij will take control of the club after a rigorous search for new owners by advisory firm KordaMentha.

Brij is chairman of Primeland, a Victorian property group which specialises in both residential and commerical development and investment management.

The Primeland Group-led consortium is headed by Brij and John Nekic — who is set to be appointed as executive chairman-elect of the club — and has global business links, with presences in Australia, Singapore, UK, India, the UAE, and Europe.

Perth Glory have been without an owner since July, after the APL issued a breach notice to long-time chairman Tony Sage, prompting him to hand back the licence.

It came months after the APL had begun to provide financial assistance to the club to pay player and staff wages.

In a boost for current club personnel, all staff will be retained on their current terms and entitlements.

The club were placed into receivership with KordaMentha after Sage handed back the licence, with Brij’s arrival set to mark the first time the ownership has changed hands in 17 years.

It is understood the receivers fielded seven bids for the Glory, with a mix of interested parties based in Australia and overseas.

Among Primeland’s portfoilo is the recent purchase of Melbourne boutique hotel the Brighton Savoy, ahead of a planned $120 million apartment and townhouse redevelopment.

Brij also holds the role of chief executive at Singapore-based company Base2 Capital, which specialises in sports management and real estate private equity.

Good win even though we were a bit overrun in the middle. I think Cook is clearly the better keeper at the moment, but his distribution definitely holds him back and would make it tough on the rest of the side who don't get much cheap possession (If he cleans that up he'd surely be on a few clubs radars abroad).

Nice to see Warland with a fabulous pass. Cola with another goal. A pretty decent mix of experienced players and youth.

With this club's luck I am not surprised. It does beg the question why did they announce the sale if all the criteria were not met?
TBF in that offical statement they do announce them as only “the preferred bidder” and not “formally awarded”.

"PRIMELAND GROUP-LED CONSORTIUM ANNOUNCED AS NEW OWNERS OF PERTH GLORY"

A magically shambolic club.

Very true:
“In July 2023, the APL appointed receivers to manage the transition of Perth Glory’s licence to new owners.

At the conclusion of this 11-week process, Primeland Group, an Australian-based development group specialising in asset management, was identified as the successful bidder.”

Usually it would be wrapped up, wonder what the issue was though?

“Perth Glory can confirm that the club’s potential new owners, the Prime Land group-led consortium, were unable to satisfy certain conditions precedent to the sale transaction and the conditional sale agreement has subsequently been terminated by the Receivers, KordaMentha.”
