Tregenza played some games for Glenelg under 16’s last year getting in the best players for a few games Not sure how good he is and where he plays but would assume if like dad would be a midfielder

do you reckon he bounces the ball as soon as he gains possession too?

I can absolutely assure you Hamish and his scouts would have been very aware of Max Michalanney the draft prospect but not of Max Michalanney the Father/Son draft prospect....that's not part of Hamish's job description (talent idendification). Not his job to identify what draft prospects are the sons of a long past SANFL players that luckily made Max eligible for us.
But that does beg the question of whether the left hand knows what the right hand is doing?

I quite agree with you that Hamish would have known about Max's talent (but not his F/S status). I would also hope that someone else within the club would have known that Jim was an eligible father, under the SANFL rule.

Surely someone in the club would therefore have been able to put two and two together? Yet all evidence suggests that this connection was not made until relatively late in the piece.

I doubt Max was on anyone's radar much before 2021. Not a standout in 2019 and then no footy 2020. Jim I'm sure was probably crossed off the list when Tom ( only boy from 1st marriage) amounted to nothing. Who would of guessed he'd then have another 3 boys.

I'm not sure why it's an issue though, Buckley's chance there are any other similar cases out there. To qualify father needed to have played 200 games before 1991. That's 33 years ago. After Jack turns 18 ( Wether we take him or not) surely the sanfl qualify rule is just dead

Who would have guessed it would take over 30 years to benefit from the sanfl father & son rule!

Don't we have a Past Players committee?

Sure some will ignore or don't want anything to do with the club but footy networks exist long after the football is finished.

I still hear what players are up to 10-20 years after they left the club.

But I can also ask after others as well

It caught Rucci by real surprise and he didn't have enough time to dig deep into those escort cup games to whine to the AFL...he is likely still like a bulldog chewing a wasp about it
Rucci did a good job in stuffing us up though.
We didn’t get Gibbs with a 3rd rounder F/S at the time, compounded this by picking Mackay with that pick instead, then sold the farm to get a burnt out Gibbs late in his career due to our emotional attachment and an order from a non-football incompetent CEO.

I’d be happy if we stuffed Port around like that.

I think past players of the Crows would be well tracked. Max is an extreme edge case.

My theory is it can often be an advantage in sport not to be a deep thinker. Welsh certainly seems not to overthink. Seems like a classic knockabout lad.

Handpassing looked pretty average here tbh but he isn't viewed as a quality prospect because of his ability to hand it off.

Didn't the Power losers on BF try to actively shut down the Max qualification, prior to the draft?
I know there was a poster that said that Jim was a few games short IIRC.

From what I recall of that discussion, I dont think they counted "Escort Cup" games in the preseason or something like that. Then there was also the suggestion that he was on the bench for a few games but didnt come onto the ground, so they added those games to his overall tally?

Then I remember the thread went really quiet for a while and we waited for the AFL decision. :$ :D

I'm pretty sure the AFLs eventual position in the washup of the Gibbs incident and the retrospective query wether Brad Ebert should have qualified for Power is that it's up to the SANFL to determine what is a SANFL game and it would accept the official SANFL record as is. Biggest issue with Ross Gibbs I thought was how many of his 253 SANFL games were played 1991 to 1994 after the qualification period ended. I doubt the AFL wants to re-visit any of that

YOUNG TALENT TIME FOR SONS OF GUNS

L The sons of guns are out to play. With Crows fans still having fresh memories of Scott Thompson exploding from packs and Brett Burton leaping over them, the duo’s sons, Harry and Jimmy, are about to take a big step in their emerging football journeys. They will on Saturday don the SANFL guernseys of Glenelg and WoodvilleWest Torrens as the league launches its inaugural under-14 competition. Norwood and West Adelaide kick things off on Friday night at Norwood Oval, with the remaining three Round 1 games featuring on Saturday. The historic state league pathway will pit the eight standalone SANFL clubs against each other in a seven-round season, with an emphasis on fundamentals and skill development. “The objective of the new under-14 competition is to attract the most talented kids to our SANFL clubs earlier to help set them up for long, productive careers,’’ SANFL head of talent Brenton Phillips said. “We feel that if we can get them into SANFL Club environments at an earlier age we can teach them some good habits and skill fundamentals which will hopefully set them up for footy in their 16th and 18th years. “We have had under-13, 14 and 15 development squads for a long time and they have serviced clubs well but they are often only two-to-three game series. “In the past four-to-five years we have made several changes to the talent pathway and to introduce an under-14s competition will allow us to set these kids up even better. “With a bigger training block and a longer season it will give the young players a really good taste of what (SANFL) club football and regular strong competition is all about. It’s just starting the nursery a little bit earlier so to speak.’’ Phillips said coaches had been encouraged to use players in a series of different positions during the campaign so that they are exposed to multiple roles to improve their all-round games. “This is not to be results-driven competition, it’s about focusing on development and skill fundamentals and execution,’’ he said. The under-14 competition will conclude by the weekend of Saturday, April 13, ensuring the impact on metropolitan and country community clubs is minimised and players will return to their local Club with greater experience and education. . Plenty of sons - and grandsons - of star SANFL and AFL footballers will be on show in the new development league. Apart from Thompson and Burton, who played 485 AFL games and kicked 426 goals between them, the sons of Adelaide legend Mark Ricciuto (Sturt’s Joe), former Crow and Redleg Stuart Bown (Norwood’s Loki), four-times Port Adelaide premiership player and ex-Richmond defender Brian Leys (the Eagles’ Max), ex-North Adelaide player Daniel Ebert (Rooster Bodhi), former Rooster and Magpie Michael Clinch (Rooster Michael Jnr) and grandson of former Central District captain Lyle Skinner (Bulldog Lucas) are among those who will strut their stuff in a SANFL arena for the first time. “It’s always nice to see your own kids running around enjoying their sport, whether it’s footy or any other sport that they are involved in,’’ Scott Thompson said. “To see Harry play under-14s now makes me think he is growing up far too quickly.’’ The young Thompson, 13, who was once a regular fixture at Crows training alongside his dad, said he wants to follow in his footsteps. “Dad’s always been there for me and helped me with my football and training so I want to follow in his footsteps,’’ Harry said

We saw Burton and his family down at Seaford Beach last summer and my dog absolutely lost her s**t barking at Burton.... He was in full wetsuit so that may have been why but she rarely barks at people, it was out of character for her and it was very embarrassing. I had to apologise and leave immediately.

Good dog

They are still young and anything can happen but I have seen a few of those players listed in that under 14 article and I think they were lucky to make the sanfl squads. When clubs are dealing with 80 odd kids, having a 'name', certainly seems to help stay in the system.
