A pick in the middle!!!!

We should be getting PICK 1....This is a farken joke, surely!!

CLUBS will be able to re-sign their AFLW players as soon as Monday, in a departure from the traditionally combined Sign and Trade period.

The new Collective Bargaining Agreement has meant clubs will also be able to offer contracts that are longer than the previous maximum of two seasons.

In a big boost for players, the contracts will also be 12 months long, meaning they will continue to be paid over the off-season.

Instead of a signing window, the AFLW landscape will now move to a similar setting as the men's competition, with players able to be re-signed at any point, with a set list lodgement date ahead of the draft.
The AFLW Draft has now been locked in for December 18, but the traditional post-draft signing period has changed.

Now renamed the Supplemental Selection Period (SSP), it has been shifted to begin on Monday, February 5.

Clubs do not have to completely fill their lists at the draft, and have the ability to hold open up to two spots for the SSP if they wish.

For players to be eligible for SSP, they must have nominated for and been overlooked in the draft, and can have nominated either their home state or national pools.

In the past, the post-draft signing period kicked off the day after the draft, and was for clubs to sign players who had nominated for another state but had been overlooked (e.g. Melbourne signing West Australian Sabreena Duffy).

The first "player movement" period will be for expansion clubs (Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney) able to sign underage academy players.

These players – who may include junior stars including Lauren Young, Shineah Goody and Laura Stone – will skip the draft entirely.

Clubs must use two picks in the draft itself (down from three in previous drafts), meaning if they wish to hold over two selections for SSP, they have to take four picks into the draft.

Expansion clubs' pre-draft selections are not included as draft picks, and the four teams will still have to take the minimum two selections.

Live bidding for father-daughter selections and northern academies (Queensland and New South Wales) will occur for the first time within the draft.

The father-daughter bidding previously occurred a few days before the draft, clubs used to have to match bids with their next available selection, even if that next pick was 40 selections later. The pick used was revealed to the public during the draft, so the player could experience the process of having a proper announcement.

A change will see clubs now having to match bids within the same round, and if they do not have a pick remaining in that round, the player goes to the club which made the bid.

The minimum games requirement to be eligible for father-daughter is just one match.

Jemma Rigoni (Melbourne, daughter of Guy) and Charlotte Simpson (Geelong and St Kilda, daughter of Sean) are among those who could be in the running for father-daughter picks.

After a rocky start, in which they lost three of their four opening games, they successfully climbed back up the ladder with four straight wins before losing to Sydney over the weekend. The close nature of the season meant this loss took them from fifth and knocking on the door of the eight, back down to 10th.
They play a lacklustre Richmond in the final home-and-away round, who took themselves out of finals contention with their loss to Geelong on Saturday night after making their maiden finals appearance last season in fourth spot.

Given their low percentage (95), Collingwood need to win and have at least one of the following scenarios take place:
  1. A Geelong loss to Hawthorn
  2. A Sydney loss to Fremantle
  3. A Gold Coast loss to Essendon
  4. If Sydney win, a Pies win by a big enough margin to overtake the Swans on percentage
Under all these scenarios, the Pies also need St Kilda to lose, or to win by a margin big enough for them to overtake the Saints. If the race comes down to percentage, Geelong are in the box seat given they have a very healthy 130.5.

I won't be too unhappy if we don't make the 8.

We have to review all aspects of the team, further our injuries and lack of back up have hurt.

I was looking at what we have lost to other teams over the week-end and it would almost make another team.

yeah, wont be the end of the world if we dont make it.. We havent had many quality draft picks in a while, given we tend to play finals (but never good enough) most years, or trade them away for players in the trade period.. to top up.

Just to add Band 1 compo is not in the middle.

1/. Band 1 compo is pick 11
2/. the expansion clubs Hawthorn, Essendon, Port and Essendon sign PSP U18 players potentially getting the best U18's for nothing
3/. We con only draft from the National pool or the Victorian pool

From Rookie Me Central October rankings:

With 6 clubs from Victorian finishing outside the Top 8 our Band 1 compo will effectively be the seventh best from the victorian pool after PSP.
The seventh best from the Victorian pool might only be the 20th or so best in the open draft!

How pathetic.......

Shows how bad the AFLW is Ran
Not too much different to any other expansion, happened with GWS/GC with getting access to underage prospects. But hopefully this is the last year, and those teams will fall in line with the rest of the comp. They have had two years now.

It’s got nothing to do with expansion.
That’s the least of the concerns.

State based drafting, with uneven teams in each state is 100% the problem.

Take the Crows…they finish on top, yet could get the 7th and 12the best players (potentially) in an open draft.
Two players rated higher.
That’s two players rated higher than what we could use “pick 4” on.

Yes there are assumptions about which state they nominate. But the point remains.

Yeah, and likely to remain until it becomes a national draft.

Yup indeed. Which is only really when the money allows it to happen….which is still years away.

Until then, vic clubs that are bad will struggle to rise.

I really hope the Pies look at starting an AFLW Next Generation Academy pathway. Correct if I'm wrong but I don't think any club has one for AFLW? Kind of makes sense yeah?

No one is sorting out an academy until they get first dibs on the players.

As Jen said…up to AFL to decide it’s a good idea.

At some point, AFL needs to decide if this competition is real or a sideshow.

Unfortunately it's a sideshow at the moment when you consider the Band 1 compensation pick we will end up having for losing one of the top 5 best players in the competition, and probably the most marketable player in the AFLW in Chloe Molloy....

I think there is an expectation from long time AFL M followers about this which is part of the issue.

Everyone expects the same trade valuations & rules. But clubs are favouring bad deals for players as it’s “part time”. Which I’m 100% behind. Including Chloe.

It’s the state based drafting (which I also understand….but hate!) that is causing the problems.

No culture is winning when there is a 100%+ pay increase to move…which again….fully support.

So until the AFL pony up….the rules and system are not going to change….again, as much as I hate it from a club POV, I fully support from an athlete POV.

Just sucks to be on the wrong end of it for once!!
