Unsung Heroes - Round 22
Brisbane: Lincoln McCarthy

It was fitting that in his 50th senior match and against his former side, Lincoln McCarthy would be the unlikely Brisbane hero. With 84 seconds remaining and the Lions trailing by four-points, Brisbane frantically moved the ball forward of centre, hoping for a match-winning moment. Enter, McCarthy. Flying over Jack Henry, McCarthy took a contender for mark of the year before calmly going back and slotting the goal to put the Lions two points up. The victory saw Brisbane move to top spot on the ladder for the first time in 12 years.

Needs a September spike: Lincoln McCarthy

The former Cat was a revelation in the opening two months of the year, impressing with four goals in his first match for the club. But McCarthy has dropped off dramatically ahead of finals, dropping his ranking points to just 55.1 from Round 19-23. Coming into this year, he had only played more than five AFL games in a season on one occasion, suggesting maybe he is in need of a rest — which the bye round before finals should help him find his spark again.

Decade from hell: 11 moments that defined Lions' meteoric rise
11. McCarthy's mark
When Brisbane dominated the AFL in the early 2000s, its home ground became known as the Gabbattoir, so imposing a venue was it to play at. With a finals spot locked up, the Lions hosted Geelong in round 22 with a top-four position up for grabs - and in front of its first crowd to exceed 35,000 this decade, Brisbane got the job done. The Cats held a handy cushion for most of the day, but a towering Lincoln McCarthy mark and goal with less than two minutes remaining shook the stadium and ultimately gave the Lions two home finals.

Handy player but there will be a bit of pressure on him next season to take his game up a level.

Getting a bit old to just be a handy role player

Lions leadership group welcomes two new faces

SENIOR coach Chris Fagan’s belief that a wide range of leaders is the cornerstone to success has led to the players voting for an expanded leadership group for 2021.

Captain Dayne Zorko will lead the side for the third year with Harris Andrews returning as his deputy. Veteran Daniel Rich and third year Lion Lincoln McCarthy are the new faces in the 10-man leadership group.

It is 27-year-old McCarthy’s first time in an AFL leadership group.

“It’s a privilege to be helping lead this club and I’m grateful to be trusted by my peers,’’ he said.

Darcy Gardiner, Lachie Neale, Ryan Lester, Jarrod Berry, Jarryd Lyons and Hugh McCluggage all retain their positions.

General Manager of Football Danny Daly said the ten players selected were exemplary leaders who lived the Club’s values and set the standards on and off the field for their teammates. “As a footy club we really value leadership and we encourage our players to take on the responsibility of being leaders,’’ he said. “To have ten players voted into this group by their teammates is a terrific result for us.

“Each of the leaders are different personalities and possess their own leadership styles and that diversity is great for our group, but what they all have in common is a commitment to our standards.

“Daniel and Lincoln are fantastic additions who have already displayed strong leadership by their actions on field. “We look forward to seeing what this group will achieve in 2021.’’

The In-Form Lion Flying Under The Radar

While bigger name teammates Joe Daniher and Charlie Cameron garner most of the attention, there's another Brisbane forward flying under the radar, says Lions vice-captain Harris Andrews.

Lincoln McCarthy is in career-best form through seven rounds and Andrews says it hasn't gone unnoticed by his teammates.

"He's been sensational," Andrews said on Tuesday morning.

"His ability to compete hard, bring the ball to ground when he needs to and then follow up at ground level as well.

"He's so dangerous in the air and at ground level.

"He's such a presence down there in the forward line from a leadership perspective."

McCarthy, 27, has been a regular in Brisbane's team since coming from Geelong prior to the 2019 season, missing just two games.

He is averaging 15 disposals, five tackles and has kicked seven goals this season.

His over-the-shoulder handpass in Saturday night's win over Port Adelaide that resulted in a Dayne Zorko goal highlighted his team-first play.

"He certainly goes under the radar externally I reckon," Andrews said.

"But internally we're all about him.

"We know the important role he plays and we love having him."
