The AFL and AFLPA are pleased to announce that a Heads of Agreement (HOA) has been reached for the player movement period ahead of the 2023 AFLW Season (Season Eight).

Clubs and players were contacted today with a summary of the arrangements for a ‘Priority Signing Period’ as determined by the AFL.

Clubs and players also communicated a ‘Sign and Trade Period’ that will take place as a new CBA is being negotiated between the AFL and AFLPA.

KEY DATES
  • Priority Signing Period (PSP): 1 March (9am) – 8 March (2pm)
  • Sign and Trade Period: 10 March (9am) – 20 March (3pm)
Priority Signing Period

The Priority Signing Period (PSP) will allow the four AFLW Season Seven expansion clubs – Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and the Sydney Swans – to sign ‘PSP players’ without a trade.

‘PSP players’ are those who have completed three or more AFLW seasons.

Essendon will be permitted to sign up to two players during the PSP. They will also be permitted to offer a ‘Secondary Relocation Reimbursement / Payment to players signed during the PSP.

Hawthorn will be permitted to sign up to three players during the PSP. They will also be permitted to offer a ‘Secondary Relocation Reimbursement / Payment to players signed during the PSP.

Port Adelaide will be granted two additional list spots for Season Eight. They will be permitted to sign up to three players during the PSP. They will also be permitted to offer a ‘Secondary Relocation Reimbursement / Payment to players signed during the PSP. They will be permitted to sign one underage player during the PSP.

Sydney Swans will be granted three additional list spots for Season Eight, reducing to for two for Season Nine. They will be permitted to sign up to five players during the PSP. They will also be permitted to offer a ‘Secondary Relocation Reimbursement / Payment to players signed during the PSP.

The Sydney Swans were also offered the ability to offer a longer-term contract with an additional two seasons more than allowed in the Season Eight list rules for two players. They are also permitted to offer a longer-term contract with an additional one season more than allowed in Season Eight list rules for three players.

The number of PSP players a club can lose is capped and based on their finishing position post-finals in Season Seven:
  • Clubs that finished 1st – 4th: no more than five players able to be lost through PSP
  • Clubs that finished 5th – 8th: no more than two players able to be lost through PSP
  • Clubs that finished 9th – 18th: no more than one player able to be lost through PSP
The AFLW List committee will determine any relevant compensation for clubs at the conclusion of the PSP.

Compensation will include draft picks to be used in the AFLW Draft leading into Season Nine of the AFLW. Any compensation will not be permitted to be traded in the Sign and Trade Period.

Sign and Trade Period

The sign and trade period will open at Friday 10 March at 9am and close at Monday 20 March at 3pm.
Clubs will pay players the pay rates from the existing CBA, with any potential changes applied retrospectively according to the ongoing CBA negotiations.

Further information regarding detailed timelines will be forthcoming.

AFL General Manager Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said: “We’re pleased that we could reach an agreement with the AFLPA and provide our players and clubs with certainty before the next season of AFLW.”

AFLPA General Manager Player and Stakeholder Relations Brett Murphy said: “This agreement will provide certainty and security for players as we head towards Season Eight, enabling players and clubs to reach agreement and plan their return to training while broader CBA discussions remain ongoing.”

AFLW Media Release – Information regarding draft nominations

The AFL is pleased to announce that the upcoming AFLW Draft will allow players to nominate for a ‘national pool’ for the first time.

Players who nominate for the national pool elect to be considered by all 18 clubs in the NAB AFLW Competition.

A player has the choice to nominate for their home state’s draft pool or nominate to enter in a national draft pool.

AFL General Manager Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said the update was an exciting step in the evolution of the AFLW.

"There is an increased appetite for AFLW players to chase their football dreams in other states, as more opportunities (18 clubs) are presented to them to play footy," Livingstone said.

"With the continued progression of the AFLW competition, we will continue to look at how we can have a draft that balances integrity, fairness and support for potential draftees."

National draft pool

A draft prospect who nominates for the ‘national draft pool’ can be drafted by any of the 18 AFLW clubs.

If they are drafted by a club in another state other than their home state, they will be eligible for relocation support.

Home-state draft pool

A player who nominates for their home-state draft pool can be selected by a club in their home state.
  • Resides in Victoria: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong Cats, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney Swans, Western Bulldogs
  • Resides in South Australia: Adelaide Crows or Port Adelaide
  • Resides in Western Australia: Fremantle or West Coast
  • Resides in Queensland: Brisbane or Gold Coast SUNS
  • Resides in New South Wales or the Australian Capital Territory: GWS GIANTS or Sydney Swans
  • Resides in Tasmania*: North Melbourne
International players must nominate for the national draft pool.

*Players residing in Tasmania and the Northern Territory are permitted to nominate for any state pool.

The date and time of the AFLW Draft will be announced in due course.

AFLW Media Release – Date set for AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft

The AFL is pleased to confirm that the AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft will be held on Tuesday 4 April.

The ‘AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft’ will be a one-off event in lieu of the customary AFLW Draft, allowing an age reset before this year’s NAB AFLW Competition.

This follows the completion of two AFLW seasons in the 2022 calendar year, whereby the AFL has now re-aligned the AFLW Draft eligibility to be consistent with the first six seasons of the AFLW competition.

Players will complete their talent pathway activity in their 18th year (State League, National Championships, National Academy, and Draft Combine).

Clubs will not be required to add players to their lists at the draft. It is their final chance to ‘supplement’ their list ahead of the upcoming season.

The order of the AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft will be determined on Friday 24 March following the conclusion of the PSP and the Sign and Trade Period.

Far out - the AFLW does love its mega trades

Lots of players moving without picks involved too. I think in the 90s this was more common for the AFL as well, seems to be relative to the value of draft picks
