Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

JL's presser is a must watch, there's a moment where it's like he's responding to the criticisms in this thread directly lol.

Not sure about this thread. I have other issues to what he was referring to.

But on that,

I think among the general, broader AFL audience, his "defensive style and gameplan" and how our games are low-scoring has been unfairly exaggerated. Don't know how the experts over East can say that but overlook the horseshit between Richmond and Melbourne this week by HT for example or not take notice of Lyonball at Saints. IMO there has been so many boring games this year but we're the poster child of it? Our list was bottom 4 and 2 for age and experience going into this season and our forward-line is being led by kids. heck off critics.

Who knows?

Maybe the derby loss was the kick up the bum.... I mean Kim Kardashian we needed then Freo goes on a 4 or 5 game winning streak.

It could be similar to 2022 when we had that round 2 loss to the saints in Perth, that followed up a 6 game winning streak.

That's all well and good - you may be right, you may be wrong. With the cattle we currently have though, the CEO has stated we should be competing at the top end and challenging for the flag. That seems a long way off right now.
Aren't we in the 8?

I'm not sure what 'challenging' means. Care to define that?

Good win but I am still not sold on our game plan or JL. Things like not enough run from the backline, and Luke Ryan bombing to a pack on every kick out. We have too much talent out there to not get something out of this team in the next 5 years.
More concerned with the fact Voss at 20 is apparently one of the strongest?
Team doesn’t look like it knows what to do with those metal weights.
Then there is the tackling, they just don’t stick, sure a few can pull it off
but as a whole it lets us down.
Johnson is way off the mark, Erasmus needs a sprint coach.
It is easily fixed but do they want it?
If Nicks gets let go I’d be the first to give him a job. We need to find a mean
streak if we are fair dinkum about flags.

Give me strength. Luke Ryan is No 2 in the AFL for KE.

That's just such a horrifically wrong take.

Kicking long to a 50/50 is considered an effective kick.

That stat is meaningless when discussing that part of Luke Ryan's play.
Ok. He's also No 2 for D/Cl

He's a very very good user. The stats are there if you want them. But, to even hint he just bombs long is so far away from reality it needs to be called out.

Do you watch the games? He bombs long to the contest from a kick out about 80 percent of the time.

AFL players are not focused on becoming stronger, only to a limit. It's a fine balance between speed, power, and strength, with each position requiring different optimisation.
Muscle comes at a weight cost, so can be a negative in AFL. Loss of speed and agility. There's no point being strong if you're always second to the contest.

From kick ins? He absolutely does. However he's been doing it the whole time under our coach and yet he's still tasked with the kick-ins so I think it's a tactic personally.

It’s also meaningless to use those stats to pump up someone else’s game, no difference between what Ryan does from kick in to a crap I50 kick that goes to a “contest” only to be mopped up easily by opposition defenders.
FWIW, as much as I’m annoyed at those kick ins it is more often the only option because of the way we set up. Majority of players are just standing around. Sure, occasionally a player might have space but it’s easier to spot that player from higher up or in tv than being on level ground in the goal square. I’ll give Luke the benefit of the doubt here

Yep, to be clear I'm not criticising Luke Ryan.

Kick ins have been this way for so long that it has to be a tactic.

Do I watch games?

Why, yes I do - thanks for asking. Member since day 1.

But you don't have to be a footy genius to work out Luke Ryan is an elite kick. I posted the stats.

Maybe go back and read them?

Realistic chance of winning the flag - which the CEO has preached (not my words). No one has ever won the cup or got close from 8th. The dogs won from …. What, 6th? Which was the first team to do so outside of the top 4.

If you’re happy and think we’re a good team by scraping into the 8 and losing games to bottom teams then we simply have different expectations of success.

Personally my definition of success is aligned with the CEO but right now we’re not quite near his or my expectations

Great result last night, but generally the measure of how good a freo team is, is how we back up a good win one week, to one we should easily win the following week. Generally throughout our history we fall over the week after a good win.

Bulldogs finished 7th 2016. They played WC in an elimination final (what a glorious night it was). From there they defeated Hawks at MCG got past GWS in a nail-bitter at GWS home ground and played the GF at MCG. It was the first year they decided to run a bye before the finals thanks to Ross the boss the year before in 2015. What happened was the injury affected Bulldogs in the final round then had the opportunity with the bye to get a number of injured players back for finals and dumped WCE at home in that glorious elimination final defeat

Definitely, but upper body is paramount to finals success.
It’s a fine line and to get the balance right.
It’s also a mindset, and AFL is alot above the shoulders.
Dean Kemp at the eagles could bench 140kg.
IMO it’s the next step we have to take to dominate teams.
A guy like Erasmus needs at least another 5kg and a sprint coach.
He is one example, I’d say Treacy, Amiss are perfectly on track👍

It has been a weakness in our game plan FOR A LONG TIME,the kick to Nat in the middle is worth continuing with but we cant telegrath it, could also work with Youngy at various times , need to mix it up

More than Nat has to know it is coming though. When he didn't mark it we had no-one in front of the contest or out the back and were outnumbered on the ground

I am happy the dockers are in the 8. I hope we beat richmond at the mcg next week.

I just hope freo keeps that spot in the finals when the regualr season is over.
