How do we copy the Geelong and Swans models of not bottoming out?

We would have had to trade the pick 2 regardless otherwise it would have been burned on daicos, so much smarter to trade down for picks of equivalent points value. . We just would have got better value for it if we knew we were going to drop to 17th and waited a year . Even then we still would have needed to nail the draft pick and done that relatively blind due to Covid disruptions

Incorrect. You can trade it on draft day live at the latest.

Pick 2 (Cadman) would of had teams bidding that is if NORTH bid at pick 1 had they not we would of had Cadman and Daicos.

North were locked onto Horne at 1 and would likely NOT of bid on Nick.

In the event they did trading a live pick 2 would of seen a much greater outcome then pawning it off a year early as an unknown pick for a few junk picks.

I see you stand by this comment often even though it's never held up to scrutiny.

Absolutely agree with this take. In no way did we maximise that pick.

However, what’s even more galling is what Hiney then picked up by splitting that pick ..he butchered it completely.

Couldn’t we have traded for a team’s following year 1st? Pick 2 would have been very valuable and landed us a likely top 10 pick.

The Geelong method is easy.

Just got to go out and sign the best mid and forward in the comp because they love the "lifestyle" while still somehow having zero salary cap issues.

It helps when you only have to pay draft pick 25 …

… for a 21 year old ready made third tall who had originally been drafted at pick 17.

We don’t have the ‘come home factor’ of Geelong, or the ‘away from the Melbourne spotlight’ factor that Sydney has. Franklin went up there for that reason, just as Lockett did many years before him.
Geelong lured Dangerfield closer to Moggs Creek and Cameron closer to Dartmoor.

But we do have the crowds and play mainly on the MCG.

Did Harley Reid say he wanted to play for Collingwood because of the big crowds?

Hopefully the culture, people etc we have at the club makes us look even better. I really do think it’s up to the list manager to be a lot more creative in getting deals done.

We tend to be active is pick swaps but always seems to be around the same level. I’d love to see us package into a 1st round selection. Or even identify a player still on the board later in the 1st round and trade for it. Just like what the Hawks did for Weddle.
