This is surely a sign that the new season can't come quickly enough perhaps, but just to pass a little bit more time -: which guernseys at your club seem to bring bad luck to the wearer (or attract more than its share of spuddish players). (Mods - move this thread to the Bay if it gets out of hand)

Will let a Hawks supporter outline the history of their #36.

From the Crows, I nominate #1 - no-one has managed to play 100 games in it since inception. Pods isn't a spud at all but can't see him playing 5 seasons in it to get to 100 either.

And since Modra left, #6. (Byrne, Griffin - traded, Gunston - traded, L.Thomson - since taking #6 has barely played and was mentioned in trade talks), And Mods missed both flags.

#46 is lowest Carlton number not to have featured in a premiership team, so I guess David Ellard is cursed.

Touche....

But you guys know what I mean ... not the number of flags it's featured in but how players have fared in it in recent years.

I'll have to track down the history of our #36.

It's horrific
You sparked my curiosity with that post so I Googled it. You're right what a car crash, I found this, it would seem it's notable only for being Gary Ablett's number at Hawthorn.

COULD the No.36 jumper at Hawthorn be the unluckiest in footy?
Hawthorn tragic Ari Singer certainly thinks so and emailed a strong case to back it up after the latest Hawk No.36 was recently struck down with a knee injury.
"Poor Alex Woodward. He never really stood a chance," Singer wrote.
"The die was cast for Woodward the moment he was handed the cursed 36 jumper."
Singer said no number at Hawthorn had such a sorry history.
"Brian Falconer, with 57 games between 1956 and 1960, holds the games record at Hawthorn in 36," writes Singer. "Before and after, it has been worn with little distinction - not that the Hawks didn't try."

#10 is the first one that comes to mind for Geelong, with Menzel currently owning it, Kane Tenace before him, Marc Woolnough before that and Stephen Hooper in the 90s. On the other hand, TOC CHF Fred Flanagan also wore #10 and John Mossop won a B&F in the 80s in the #10.

Not a lot of history in the #18 guernsey since Reg Hickey either, including incumbent Josh Cowan, another injury-ruined player, Paul Lynch, Nathan Djerrkura and the much-maligned Kent Kingsley.

There's a few others with practically no history in the 30s and 40s (especially prior to the 2000s and Enright, Wojcinski, Ling and Milburn hitting the scene), but presumably we're keeping the discussion to relatively low/desirable numbers.

That's significantly more than anyone has worn in the #38 of Geelong (the immortal Austin McCrabb holding the record with 36), #41 (Shane Mumford with 21), #42 (Adrian Hickmott - 50), or #43 (Russell Merriman - 25). Admittedly, I don't know much about any injury-related 'curses' with those jumpers, though Mumford and Hickmott both had distinguished careers elsewhere (Hickmott in the #9 at Carlton and Mumford in the familiar #41 at Sydney).

I can't remember a good #17 before Melksham for a while. Before him was Jay Nash, Scott Camporeale, Paul Thomas, Darren Walsh, Judd Lalich, Robert Stevenson, Kevin Sporn. Stephen Carey was the last one who played over 100 games, and he finished in '86

AFL Tables is a good resource for these sort of things.

Click on the club, then the all time player list. Simple as that.

Not quite. Just have a look at Newman, he's played with the number 35, 17 and 1, but there's only information about his days wearing number 17, the records imply that he's played every game wearing 17. At least Carlton's records register number changes.

Fair enough; didn't know that. Assumed that it would have two entries for the same player in different numbers. Suppose that would throw them out of whack with the 'cap number'. Still, it's not a bad starting point.

since the 1990 premiership number 9 hasn't been great...

Andrew Tarpey
Brad Hardie
Jon Ballantyne
Matthew Francis
Glenn Freeborn
Julian Rowe
Jack Anthony
Marty Clarke

number 1 at freo seemed to be cursed to till Hayden Ballantyne came along.

Anything/anyone with paddlepop Lion on it . ;)

Oh yeah totally. According to this list, unless there's a hidden gem who hasn't been listed, the number 31 has seen some lean times recently. If Vlastuin sticks with 31, I hope he turns that around. The record games holder is apparently Leo Maguire from the 40s with 94 games.

#11 has had a new owner every season. 2011- hombsch, 2012- cornes, 2013- Adams, 2014- lamb

#46 2012- Segrave (delisted), 2013- Thornton (delisted), 2014- Addison (delisted free agent....)
