To best support Joe Burrow, Bengals need to alter their contract structure

Posted by Mike Florio on February 17, 2022, 6:58 PM EST

Bengals owner Mike Brown wants to help quarterback Joe Burrow. To best do so, the Bengals may need to change one of the fundamental ways in which they do business.

Per a league source who is paying close attention to the situation in Cincinnati recently explained it, the Bengals need to alter an approach to veteran contracts that currently does not fully guarantee payments beyond the first year of the deal. Last year’s contract with free-agent pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, for example, contained no such guarantees after 2021.

The allure of playing with Burrow will only go so far. If, for example, the Bengals decide to make a run at Commanders offensive lineman Brandon Scherff, the Bengals likely will need to be willing to bust their normal structure to secure Scherff’s services.

If they don’t do it now, they’ll have to do it after the 2022 season, when Burrow gets his already-deserved second deal. Why not just do it now? Having a franchise quarterback is a luxury that comes with the necessity of maximizing the quality of the team around him.

Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said Evan McPherson staying on the field to watch the Super Bowl halftime show remains "a real sore subject."

Apparently the team was less than thrilled with their all-world kicker not joining his teammates in the locker room during halftime of the Super Bowl. TV cameras showed McPherson, 22, staying on the Bengals benched taking in a show by legendary hip-hop artists. "Though the stunt still isn’t sitting well with Simmons, it eventually will fade into the background of McPherson’s overall body of work, which stands as one of the greatest seasons by a kicker in Bengals history, and one of the best by a rookie in league annals," The Athletic's Jay Morrison said. Simmons added that McPherson would need to improve his kickoffs this offseason. McPherson finished his rookie year with the ninth most field goals (29) and the ninth most attempts (34), drilling five walk-off kicks. No one recorded more field goals of more than 50 yards in 2021. His clutch postseason kicks and cockiness made McPherson something of a household name. He'll likely be the first kicker off draft boards in 2022.

With how stacked afc is joe just lost his only chance to win a superbowl this past superbowl. Won't make another.
They should still be in the hunt tho for another 5 years. A little luck was what got them to one so soon. If the luck isnt there or is there will be a deciding factor for who among all those AFC QBs get a shot.

I'm pretty happy with what the Bengals have been doing over this off season.

They have brought in good protection and will probably draft more so have immediately improved the biggest weakness.

Losing Uzomah hurts more than just his production his presence was huge in the locker room but hopefully bringing Hurst in can at least match him on the pitch.

Also they are starting to show some front office professionalism, Cough Cough indoor training facility.

I feel the future is bright at the Bengals over the next 5-10 years. Nothing is ever guarented in the NFL but I feel the Bengals are going to be in a position to compete for a championship for the foreseeable future.

The LT who weeks before the draft suddenly it was discovered by NFL teams that Jackson Carman had been accused of raping a 15yo girl when he was 18yo, but that the charges were dropped. With so little time to start an investigation and get to the bottom of it, many teams simply struck him out from their boards, but not the Bengals. An article about all that....

Also throws bad light on Clemson who lied to all the NFL teams when asked multiple times prior if there was any red flags with Carman.

What else have their lied about or covered up for players would be first thought when it comes to Clemson players now.

Bengals placed OG Alex Cappa (core) on active/PUP list.

Head coach Zac Taylor announced in late May that Cappa would miss a few weeks with a core muscle injury. Now almost two months removed from that report, Cappa still doesn't appear to be ready for training camp. Another high-priced free agent brought in to solidify a porous offensive line, the Bengals invested four years and $40 million into Cappa, who spent the last four seasons with the Buccaneers. There's no reason to believe Cappa's injury is more severe than initially believed. He's eligible to come off the PUP list at any time.

Bengals placed RB Samaje Perine (undisclosed) on active/PUP list.

A start on the active/PUP list ahead of training camp isn't great for Perine, who faces stiff competition from second-year back Chris Evans heading into camp. Heading into his age-27 season, Perine has seen little work the past two seasons, running behind lead back Joe Mixon. Despite totaling a career-high 27 receptions last season, Perine offers little upside for both real and fantasy purposes. Any rumors of Perine missing time will only drive up the ADP of Evans, who has been a popular best ball pick this offseason.

Bengals placed RT La'el Collins on the non-football injury list.

Collins landing on the non-football injury list is a bit of a surprise. Little news about the veteran right tackle has come out since he signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Bengals this offseason. He's eligible to come off the list at any time. We'll check back in with any additional updates on Collins' status.
