Asia China's growing influence

The decentalized china of the 90s and 2000s is gone.

Xi is now running it like a tin pot highly centralized dictatorship. He makes all the decisions and everyone just follows his orders. Anyone who questions him is out. End result. He surrounds himself with yes men who do nothing more then feed his ego and abide by his bidding.

does chinas economy immediately fall apart? Nope. Despite the medias claims of chinas economy being on the brink it simply isnt true. China has built up tremendous foreign reserves and enforces strict foreign capital flows. The country isnt going to find itself bankrup for at least many decades even with Xis complete economic mismanagement. Yes it might have some lehmann style financial hiccups. But this will be rectified because china has so much wealth it can move around to plug up holes.

was in Beijing two weeks ago and two very obvious things struck me from the people willing to talk (and this group of people willing to talk has dwindled significantly over the past 4 years).

One. Everyone with wealth and a good education is trying to flee china and move to the West. They see that Xi Will gradually take China back down the horrifying Mao path. It just will take time to get there.

Two. Xi wants to go to war with Taiwan and he wants to do it soon so he wont be too old to finish it. He sees Taiwan unification as his legacy. Assuming he maintains power (almost impossible for him to lose it at this point bar major illness) and something doesnt drastically change on the global stage that changes his mind the majority of people i spoke to predicted a war would start around 2025-2027.

A amphibious assault on Taiwan would be a very, very difficult task. It's so difficult some can't envision it happening at all, but countries do strange things when they are enthralled with empire and ultranationalism.

While the PLAN has built a naval fleet to rival the USN, it still lacks enough amphibious ships to carry out the assault. Again, this is reassuring to many folks, but there are alternatives. Civilian Roll-on/roll-off ships were proposed at one PLAN naval conference a few years ago as an answer. Fast forward to today and BYD are building a ro-ro fleet of 60 of the largest of these type of craft ever. We know how the PRC love dual use platforms.

can't really say she has nice lines

surely the build up will be noticed and dealt with, or they will be rather large targets once under way

One thing the Ukraine War has shown is the limits of traditional naval power in the face of drones; I really can't see China ever having the capability to land and supply a force that could take Taiwan.

Conventional warfare is dead - why wouldn't you buy $370 billion worth of subs when you don't even have a serious naval threat to your waters?

Time to change the thread title to "China's diminishing influence".

Well done to the EU on this.

Interesting development if true, it was first reported by the KMT's news arm UDN with other outlets citing that report so maybe with grains of salt...

US Green Berets have been in Taiwan training troops for a long time, and they may have been training other friendly countries here as well. I know Singapore used to send troops until China decided they were upset about it (probably had a minor disagreement with SG and used it for ammo). Taiwan had been a center for jungle training since the Korean War.
So now the training unit will be permanently stationed on Jinmen and Penghu, two islands in the strait. Tripwire or just lick my left one Xi by Dark Brandon and the Pentagon? :)

Yes, possibly a trip wire, certainly signalling as well.

Ten to twenty troops must really scare the world's largest army ib the middle of the largest military build up in history outside of war.

Then again with Xis failures mounting, he would be worried that people would see how much better their lives will be in a democratic post CCP China which the youth of China increasingly want.

I don't think they are there to intimidate China. At least not themselves. But China would have to recalculate what could happen if they cause American casualties by doing something against one of those islands. Jinmen could easily be targeted for some punitive attack if Chinese has hurt feelings over something. It's a stone's throw from Xiamen. The Matzu Islands further north are more isolated and would be another possible target.

More head butting by the PRC, trying to stop resupply to the vessel the Philippines grounded on Scarborough Shoal - note this is within the Philippine's EEZ. All these actions by the PRC are illegal.

A trite remark on my part, but as someone who has worked in China i say again, "China can't be trusted on any level"

Almost twice as many Australians believe the government should position the country as a middle power in Asia – a view touted by the former prime minister Paul Keating – than those who say it should be “an ally of the US”.

That is the result of Guardian’s latest Essential poll of 1,126 voters, which also found that twice as many Australians support Israel withdrawing from Gaza (37%) than believe Israel is justified in continuing its military action (18%).

What is a middle power in asia? Sounds cool. But what is it? Article doesnt explain it. How are we not a middle power in Asia already?

It means not tying ourself to the US by purchasing nuclear subs and not being a major player in world affairs in Asia.
Not fighting above our weight division, being a middleweight instead of a heavyweight.

Same as all surveys, questions can be interpreted broadly and results twisted to suit the narrative of the day. Same article down plays the survey showing two thirds of respondents are concerned about Xis moves on Taiwan which Keating says isn't our concern so you can easily use the same article to say Australians overwhelmingly don't agree with Keating.

Or just go one step further and agree with Keating again lol

Concerned about Taiwan because we are so closely allied to the US and the US has somewhat guaranteed a military response if China moves, ergo Australians fight and die
