Darcy Vescio 50 games
Carlton co-vice captain Darcy Vescio will become the first Carlton AFLW player to reach 50 games tonight at IKON Park. Vescio has played in all 50 of Carlton’s games since debuting in the Round 1 match against Collingwood in season one. Vescio became the first AFLW player to reach 50 career goals last season and is a two-time All Australian, three-time Carlton leading goalkicker, and was crowned the Blues’ AFLW Best and Fairest in 2021.

Three Carlton debutants
Mia Austin will be making her AFLW debut tonight after being selected with Carlton’s second pick in the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft. Amelia Velardo and Phoebe McWilliams will also be running out with the Blues for the first time after joining from Collingwood and Geelong respectively over the off-season.

blues to win aflw and vfl that's 2-1 over the pies

Don't think I said it when the fixture came out: Carlton under their new lights for the first time (sorta) to open the season, fair enough. But at least put them up against Richmond to maximise the chance of a decent contest.

If this game is at all close, put it down to Collingwood's extensive list of unavailables. Even so, I'll stick with the Pies by 24. That would take them to 4 in a row against the old enemy, after the Blues won the first 3 AFLW encounters.

Vescio is very lucky to not make contact with the head on that bump on Scheicher, could have been half a season gone

Collingwood may as well not even bother kicking it in the air for their F50 entries tonight, hardly anybody wanting a piece of the aerial contest.

And somebody grab Eliza James and shake her awake... bit of urgency wouldn't hurt when you've got it 40m out!

Collingwood's forward line is going to be the achilles heel this year. Carlton are not going to be competitive against the top 3 teams.

Playing Molloy in the midfield will do that. If Davey and Bonnici weren't injured the forward line would look a lot better.

Vescio left to rot in the goalsquare of a desolate F50, while Captain Sideways puts in a big 3-kick game (should get her another All-Australian jumper). And this is how Carlton actually chose to spend their big bucks.

Won't keep harping on about McEvoy, but Harford takes a step closer to getting sacked every week he keeps her out of the midfield.

That all said, no real surprises from the Blues tonight. Should still be 2-1 in a fortnight from now, and end up with no worse than last season's 4-6 record.

What's happened to Sabrina Frederick?

She was nearly unstoppable at Brisbane.
Now she looks near on useless.
Was the same last year. Doesn't get a kick on a good, athletic back. Seems to have lost all confidence. Seems better roaming around the ground as a ruck - gets some possessions and tackles. Really should have gone to an expansion club because if Pies are relying on her as a key forward then they're in some trouble.

They were worse than I thought. 3 scoring shots for the game and 1 of those was a very soft free kick.

If Collingwood was super impressive or had a full squad I might think otherwise, but they struggled in attack and weren't very clean. If this game was against one of the top 3 on a dry day it would have been nasty.

Which is no revelation. The question is what would have happened if the match was against Essendon/Port/GC, or GWS/StK/Richmond?

My suspicion was they'd pick up at least 4 wins against that group of 6. Didn't see anything last night to change that.

same as the 2 previous years at Richmond, her best 2 years at Brisbane are way past her
don't think it's confidence, more so her limitations as a player, Moana Hope 2.0

looking at her game against Carlton specifically, slow, large turning circle, no contested marking ability, didn't offer much in the ruck or fwd line
no chance of a miraculous change in her future outlook as a AFLW player

the thing i did see was the midfield battle, very even, but looked sub standard to what they'll be up against in say the top 8 - 10 sides
but both backlines are as strong as any, so will keep them in most games

fwd lines haven't got anything that screams out potent or dangerous, early days but lots of magnets to be shifted to kick a winning score
Molloy has to play fwd 80% of the time for Pie's to kick winning scores, McEvoy has to play in midfield For Blue's to get it fwd more
Blue's 18 I50's isn't going to be enough against most sides to kick winning scores
