List Mgmt. 2017 Draft Discussion - Draft night 24/11

Just had a flick at the list on footywire - has been updated after the draft. Smith and Maynard are the 8th and 10th oldest on the list, which is a bit surprising. Yes, we do have a younger list, but I still think hanging on to middling depth players because of that is a poor excuse. You look at that list and a lot of those younger guys aren't pushing for a spot in the team, they are already in it. Kielty, King, Johnstone, McKenna and Flipovic are the only ones who haven't been near the side yet; it's not like our young list is fully of developing schoolboys. The depth is already there with or without these older rookies.

So if the rookie list is now an extension of the main list, then we've gone from 38 to 42 players available (or 39 or 40, if you want to look at upgrades or whatever). We can still only play 22 on a match day, so further additions should go towards digging up talent with a view to the future. If we have 10 or 15 injuries, so be it. You have a backup but you don't have five poor imitations lying around just in case.

I am boozed so concede and agree.

couldnt they just change it so say the first 2 rounds are on a 3yr contract(heard they wanted longer contracts for draftees) then 3rd and fourth rounds 2 yr contracts and anything after that a 1 year contract. they prob want to keep rookie draft so footy stays in media for abit longer but yeah could be worked out

The issue is that with a top 35 pick, chances are in 2 years time (under current contract rules) he will be able to negotiate more money on his next contract than a pick 35 plus player would (generally speaking). But under your proposal he would be stuck on an original draft contract for another year whereas the lower picked player would be able to negotiate a higher rate a year, or even two years sooner (if they are good enough to stay on the list).

If the AFLPA want longer draft contracts, it would have to be across the board, it's not the top end of the draft who would necessarily need stability or protection in their fledging careers, it would generally be the lower picked players. Three years is a long time to get stuck with a dud player on a list though, so couldn't see it happening.

M
I think he did a bit of ruck and forward and back. Will probably be done the order in terms of ruck g at AFL but he’d be an option.

Maybe they see Keilty as a bit of a replacement for Pederson, playing as a forward or back that can provide a chopout in the ruck.

Have a good 2014-type feeling about this draft for us, in spite of not having those same picks. Everyone we got seems to have slid a bit as Petracca/ANB/Oscar did + Stretch was also a steal.

Petracca the slider...

Draft happens, the media and recruiters review and everyone claims to be over the moon, "can't believe he was still available at that pick" and all the picks are either future 200 gamers or a potential diamond in the rough. Fast forward two years and half get delisted without any fanfare. Obviously no club is going to come out and say "well, they were all that was left when our picks came around" but when they're all bright bushy-tailed 18 year olds, the popular gauge on their potential tends to range from a minimum of 'the sky' all the way to 'limitless'.

So 2014 would be nice, but this is more similar to the 2011 draft.... however, in JT we trust.

Yeah I don't give a heck about any of these kids until they've played VFL for a year so you can see their real strength and weaknesses exposed.

Eh. Jason Taylor has a good hit record with sliders so far though, it's hardly comparable to 2011. If he says he's surprised someone slide I'll believe it.

But Fritsch has already played VFL for a year. Does this mean you do give a heck about him? Or is it a year starting now, so he will have to play VFL for another year, making a total of 2 years VFL before you give a heck about him?

Fritsch gets my attention because he's already starred at VFL level. We have seen him dominate with a pooncy frame already so he's relatively proven. He actually had a better VFL season than Hannans so hes a talent.

So did this if you ignore this year.

This aged well.
Hmm. Spargo taken ahead of McCartin (33), Constable (36), Petruccelle (38) and Worpel (45) starting to look a bit grim when we have no vision for how exactly we're going to turn him into an AFL footballer at his size.
