The comparison to the Hawthorn threepeat team is an interesting one.

The current 22 is filled with a whole bunch of lower picks who are batting way above what they were predicted to be whereas the Threepeat team rested on a some very solid top end picks (with some important exceptions).

Pick 56 - Sicily
Pick 67 - Moore
International rookie - Nash
Pick 46 - Worpel
MSD - Newcombe
Lewis - Pick 76
Bruest - Rookie
Massimo - piece of piss from the Bombers
Chol - pick 69
Ginkivan - 42
Hardwick - pick 44

I could go on. Hawthorn is doing better than many expected with a pretty poor draft hand from earlier years. Our “depth”, if it includes MacKenzie and Ward, is top end - so it’s a pretty different story to the threepeat.

I fear the worst. Things are about to get REALLY bad.

What are the depth options for Walsh and Newman btw? We need to think of depth for Lewis and Dear.
Okay maybe I'm being dense but I'm struggling to see the problem lol.

Are you concerned that instead of a bunch of very solid easily retainable depth, foot soldier types, that too many of them will be/are cap demanding stars?

I would never call someone dense so stop being hard on yourself. But yes you’re on the right track. Too many good players all at once will sink us.

What makes you say that?

I've been saying this for 6 months

The way Carlton finished (regardless of the injuries) last season, has me deeply concerned they will stay above a 50% win rate this season.

Many believe that once they're fully fit again, they will magically be good again.

What concerns me the most about Carlton is their gamestyle. It looks good when on, but too often in the back half of season it was caught out. The fast transition from d50 to centre/corridor can easily be cut off with good zoning. I don't think having all personnel available will magically make it better.

I don't have access to the numbers but I would hazard a guess that we exit D50 to the corridor the least of any other team or at the very least near the bottom in the AFL. We hit the wings the vast majority of the time.

I don't think this is the reason we dropped off In 2024.

The end of our season was a tough watch, no doubt about that. If we play the way we did against you guys we'll be a certainty for the spoon, so I can understand your pessimism.

I agree with you about the gamestyle and I think those problems started to show themselves way before the injury crisis hit. The GWS/Bulldogs games is what I'm referring to. Our team and style lacked balance. We played that slingshot footy with too many slow types in the midfield and forward line. Anyone that says injuries were the only reason for our demise is just wrong. It certainly cooked us towards the end of the season, but we had genuine tactical issues that needed to be addressed by list management and the coaching staff.

The moves we made in the offseason addressed that IMO. We delisted/traded out a lot of injury prone and slow players. This will make room in the team for players that will suit the roles we need much better. Whereas last season we played Owies and Kennedy in the forward line, this season we'll have quicker players that are genuine small forwards. Similarly we'll have Jagga Smith and a fit Adam Cerra in the midfield rather than relying on slow inside types (Cripps, Kennedy, Carroll and Hewett) way too much.

I do think that a better fitness/injury record will help us improve, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

You guys have slow ball movement coming out of d50 and when you go fast it looks great sometimes, but it completely gets undone other times.

If you're not consistently good at moving the ball fast out of d50 these days you're going to be found out often.

You really offered no reason to your downfall last season, you're live in a Carlton bubble which will soon pop completely.

You acknowledge what I'm saying then, while also stating that you'll see a marked improvement in ball movement this season with the moves you have made in the off season. Who was it that you acquired in the off season that you believe will improve your transition from d50?

I had you guys penned in to get Houston in the offseason, was the ideal get for Carlton. I'm not sure what your football department is thinking by letting him go to Collingwood.
