I think they’re really similar because blanck is also good offensively and I’d trust him. Think he’ll be quality. But it’s a less of a sample size and you’ve watched more of Murray.

One is in the U/22 AA squad, the other wouldn't have even have been considered.
Murray is now a proven quality, whereas Blanck isn't... yet.
They really are not at similar levels!
I think the way I look at it is more their ability and not in a simplistic way. It’s really hard with blanck and the amount of consistency in his games. But like he dominated naughton on the weekend, in a smashing against Gold Coast he belted Ben king and was one of our best. I rate him highly and I rate Murray. It’s more so the amount of consistency

Indeed... Murray has been consistent all season... which why he is proven at this level & in the U/22 AA squad... & inconsistency is why Blanck is a still unproven.
It takes more than a few good games to be proven at AFL level.
It does but I’m confident he will be. I am a big Murray fan tho, albeit I’m unsure why Butts got worse. He was superb his first season.

Butts has been carrying different injuries most of this season. He would be our most subbed off player as they have tried to manage him through the season.
Still think he is a dependable no flair player, but imo Keane offers more going forward offensively. The 2 have most of next season to battle it out as Murray recovers from his ACL.
Still remember the Butts and Hawkins battle. Fell in love with him then, not many did what he did that day.

Yeah not sure what’s happened to Butts but he’s still young.
Only 3 games but like what I’ve seen from Keane, will be really interesting how he looks after a proper pre-season.

True. We managed 3 in the squad in 2008 while Geelong got 10. And I think they won the flag too. How could they not, with that many AA ?!?

Our youth is ****ing concerning tbh. Other than sheeze and wardlaw who have only been here for a minute, who else have we got? We’ve had some nice cameos from some of the young guys here and there but there’s no consistency from them.

I like Eddie Ford.
Will Phillips will be fine IMO.
Tom Powell is the biggest concern though. Most thought he was a draft steal and would become a reliable accumulator like a Jackson Macrae. I believe he's currently struggling to get a senior gig however?
Hawks have the best youth by far. Plus they are coached by a guy who is uncompromising and obviously pretty inspiring given the results over the last month or two. Long term success with this young group.
North are looking ok. Some absolute quality in their list, just hoping Clarko can get the best out of them.

Bit like Freo and Port – you expect teams from proud football states to be really competitive but these 3 teams – freo, port and crows – have been so ordinary for so long (in terms of finals and ultimately GF success) you cant rely on them to get the job done. Until we see a premiership from any one of these teams they remain under achievers for teams from dominant AFL states

I'm pretty confident Murray is not close to AA selection. I'm not saying he is not a great lockdown defender - he may well be..but to be selected All Australian that is no longer enough. You now need to be able to shut down your opponent AND offer plenty the other way. They haven't picked a pure stopper in year and years (because the standards is so high with players able to both shut down their opponent and intercept and rebound the other way).
According to the 'benchmarking' on the AFL site (i.e. compared to other key defenders) Murray is not elite in any category (and is in fact 'below average' in most).
He IS a good stopper - he only loses 17.5% of his 1 on 1's (and has a decent amount of spoils). However, I looked up 3 of the names on my list for comparison (as doing everyone takes too long) - Jacob Weitering loses only 10%, Sam Taylor 12% and James Sicily 14%. IN other words, according to the available data, these guys are better pure stoppers than Nick Murray. But even if this point was arguable and let's say they are even as stoppers, look at the other data available
Sicily, for example, averages 10 intercepts a game (elite), Murray 4 (below average)
Sicily averages 9 pressure acts (elite), Murray 5 (below average)
Sicily averages more than double the tackles....
and then the offensive stats.....
This is just 1 catgory from 1 player comparison but it begins to tell the story. Sicily is double and triple nearly all of these metrics. The other categories tell the same story - metres gained, rebound 50's, score involvements, you name it - it's all double or triple (was going to post but the images will make my post way too long).
I thought it would be fair to choose someone less 'offensive' than Sicily and chose Wilkie as he is more gaining a reputation as an elite stopper but it's the same story. He averages 21 disposals going the other way (more than double Murray). It's the same for intercepts, tackles, rebounds, etc, etc.
The expectations for elite key defenders have changed and the standard is so high at the moment. Murray is doing a good job but really isn't close to AA for the reasons I have mentioned.

If Sicily is 2 or 3 times better than Murray and he cant get AA, this Murray fellow must be genuinely average.
Hawks fans certainly haven't opened themselves up to years of humble pie if they don't ascend the ladder as quickly as they think they will.
