"With a string of players moving on, the VFL Pies will have a new look in 2025. They will also have a new coach, with Andy Otten taking over from Josh Fraser."

This is encouraging context.

In what way? Its evident lots of players are moving on and we have a new coach.
Its gonna be almost completely different bar 3-4 players.

I'm just reading between the lines and assuming that that's an allusion to this being a conscious move to switch the team up, which is context that hasn't really been acknowledged.

Yeah. I did wonder if it was just the players choice, as many of them would be seeking greater opportunity or if it was the clubs decision to a clean break. There is obviously some players around from this past season, some we have re-signed already; some vying for a spot

We had quite a big turnover last year too, didn't we?
I think around 9-10 would be considered normal year on year. So last year was 11

Last year:

DEPARTING: VFL: Viv Blackmore-Moore (Banyule), Jacob Booth (Diamond Creek), Ed Delany (retired), Jake Long (retired), Cobi Maxted (Sandhurst), Jovan Petric (Williamstown), Jack Raines (interstate), Lachie Tardrew (retired – Sandhurst)
Zach Greeves, Campbell Hustwaite, Riley Voulanas.

We're currently at (13) that we know of.
From March 2024
Crocker, Lane (retred), Hutchinson (Drafted - Eagles), Sparkes, Schrieber (Bullants), Long (Drafted - Collingwood), Longmire (Weribee), Silvani (Noosa), Tomasiello (Coburg) Harry Flynn (Bullants), Ashwin (Bullants), Farrant (Port Melb), Rye Penny (Werribee)

Glover and Kennedy has re-signed. Word that Tom Wilson has too.
The following are training for a spot:
Mathey
Sievers
O'Brien
Willis
Mulvogue
Dowling
Macdonald

to end his career where he started I suppose. But I felt he was hyped up too much and didn't really deliver.
And he wanted to escape Carlton. I loved seeing how upset their supporters would get when Benny was always at Pies games & attending milestone matches cheering us on whilst their VFL captain 😂

So funny.

Pretty sure Cooper Macdonald has been contracted

We'll be attractive for those close to AFL. Taken a few from our VFL recently and a fair chance to add a couple of cheap mature guys at the end of the year if we have retirements.

But the problem is you can only add so many top VFL guys, as the AFL listed kids take priority, so if we get injuries again we're stuffed again. As most of the VFL listed guys will be depth and you're not signing good ones to be depth who gets shunted to another league if we are healthy.

Probably why we dont tend to go with too many ex afl players.
Its a development league, as you need to play a minimum of SEVEN U22 players including a 18-19 year old 23rd man, which doesn't leave too much room for experienced players along with your afl players

Curtis Taylor would be a good addition! Also a pies supporter as a kid so that’s a bonus.

That includes senior listed players as well though. Not counting Harrison, we’d have 8-9 players who’d meet that criteria.

Not all of them will be playing VFL every week, but we should be looking at bringing in some undrafted guys and getting VFL games into our NGA players from this year.

We don’t get a lot of choice. VFL TPP doesn’t allow for much more than that unless the more experienced guys you list are prepared to play for unders.

Brady Grey and Curtis Taylor plus the Brisbane VFL player are a nice start to rebuilding the VFL list. Not too fussed about most who have left. They were not up to the level
