VFL 2023 - GOLD COAST SUNS WIN THE PREMIERSHIP

The Vic bias was on full display tonight with the no calls GWS were getting against Collingwood (how was that not high contact!?!?).
I don't think the AFL would have been upset if GWS won though. They want to "win western Sydney".

I also have no doubt the AFL would love the VFL stand alones to disappear so they can have a reverse grade comp. They already have by the mustangs and scorpions being devoured by their AFL counterpart. How long unto the Zebs do the same?

Perhaps I worded that poorly. I was suggesting GWS were hard done by last night and in a world with perfectly fair umpiring I tend to think the Giants would be in the GF.

Maybe they would like to kill the standalones in favour of a reserves comp but it's simply not going to happen because there's too many people protecting the ongoing survival of the SANFL and WAFL. Instead we get an east coast league topped up by standalones and the AFL have even managed to sneak Southport into the competition so they can grow the game more in Queensland. I suspect the VFL in its current form of mostly AFL reserves + several standalones will be around for a while.

No I agree they should have got some free kicks that were not paid. I didn't mean to be antagonistic.

I hope our game tomorrow is not marred by such inconsistencies.

I hope Southport do well in the VFL as a standalone.

Hope tomorrow is a good game 😁

Anyone had any trouble with trying to buy GF tickets? I’ve tried a few times and it keeps asking for an unlock code which I have no idea what that might be. I’ll probably end up buying a ticket at the gate but still, if I could pre-purchase that would be good as well.

Nah, I got straight in when I brought my ticket. But they should be heaps at the gate.

If you're going by public transport to Princes Park don't catch tram 19. Someone has been hit and the tram is stopped.

Try go up Swanston Street from the city.
Whereabouts along the line? PTV is suggesting I take the 58 and I’m sure they share some segment of tracks, just not sure if they share wherever this incident happened

It's after the 58 segment. It was behind the hospital. We are moving now but trams will be backlogged.

A little bit of a shame that GC friends and family have a monopoly on the broadcast wing, they have the area from the Gardiner Stand to the Heroes Stand all for themselves and the Heroes is my favourite place to sit at Princes Park. The other wing looks really full though which will be good for TV. Either way though it’s extremely exciting to see my beloved Tigers in a Granny. Crowd is so much more full and lively than last years GF between an interstate standalone and Melbourne’s reserves during wet weather, especially considering it’s an interstate reserves side and a Victorian standalone.

So, apparently there's 20 afl listed players playing for gc (according to commentary)
I thought there was a maximum of 14 when playing a non-affiliated team?
Different rules for the finals perhaps?

I'm fairly sure the rules are different for the northern teams as well. Instead of signing multiple VFL only players, northern teams are allowed to play academy prospects. Hence the reason 16 year old Leo Lombard is playing for the Suns today.

The rule was brought in for finals, not sure why it would count.
The academy kid would count as non-listed

Probably the least they can do for us considering this game should have been played on the Gold Coast.

Not sure but obviously the AFL ticked it off. I assume it would be the same for all northern AFL reserves sides.

Very much a Werribee game, contest after contest. Dominating clearance, any time it’s become a transition game Suns look almost unstoppable.

Despite the scoreboard I feel Werribee are on top

All clubs can play academy prospects, Gold Coast are the only side that have decided not to have a VFL list and just use their academy list. As for the 16 y/o, the amount of hoops that Gold Coast had to jump through to have him play VFL matches are massive.

Is that right? I assume his participation in the victorious U18 Allies program this year helped their case. It's a pretty remarkable story that in 2023 we see a 16 year old cleared to participate in a VFL GF. The AFL rarely allows these kinds of things to happen but perhaps they felt it was in the best interests of the growing the game up north to expose a likely top 10 pick to a high level of footy 12 months out.
