Underrated TV series that aren't spoken about much/you'd never heard of prior

I should also add I Will Destroy You

I'm presuming you mean "I MAY Destroy You"?

If so, I love your long list, but I'm unsure how the #1 show on pretty much every 'Best of' list of that year can be "under-rated".

It's very good, but probably over-rated imo.

To add a series to the list, a few have mentioned 'The Night Of', which is awesome... but no-one ever mentions the show that it remade (mostly scene for scene)... 'CRIMINAL JUSTICE' from 2008. Ben Whishaw was superb in it.

Yeah, my bad on the show title.

You're right, Criminal Justice was outstanding, and not even spoiled by me having watched The Night Of beforehand.

Highly recommend Southland if you enjoy police procedurals.

The Night Of, is a quality crime drama.

Both shows are definitely not spoken much of and I would be surprised if many in here have watched them, definitely I rank both of them highly.
The Night Of is so bloody good but I forgot it existed.
Definitely on my radar for a rewatch now.

Ranked really high on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, it definitely belongs in this thread.
Miniseries are easy to forget too as they're usually a very brief moment in time, and can slide under the radar even upon release.

I'd possibly add The Terror S1 to this list, for this reason, not many people I talk to have heard of it.

The English science fiction TV show 'Primeval' which ran from 2007-2011 and which starred S Club 7 member Hannah Spearritt in the lead role was very popular at the time it aired and a definite critical and commercial success, but for some reason it seems to have been forgotten in the years since it aired, fading from popular culture.

Highly recommend this show. Its a very very slow burn. A satisfying, poignant, engaging drama with rich interesting characters you are invested in. You genuinely feel and experience the pain and suffering that the main character Daniel Holden experiences before, during and after incarceration.

Its not a binge watch show IMO, the show moves at a lethargic pace.

I would be surprised if many on here have ever heard or seen an episode of this show.
From memory, Des portrayed a sociopath like no other. He had absolutely no empathy for any human being. I consider it to be Tennant's best performance.
One great series that I keep in my back pocket is What Remains. Pretty much unheard of but it has serious respect from some on the pommy thread.

A retired MMA fighter turned trainer juggles keeping his mixed martial arts gym running and keeping his family united.

Three seasons, 40 episodes long, its a decent show that rated well, especially if your into MMA.

The Killing

Season 1 is first class and then it declines to the Season 3 finale
Its a good show, I wont spoil it, but lets just say at one stage in Season 1 I didnt rule out the detectives doing The Killing. :D

If you have seen the entire show, you will love the irony of my statement. Again no spoilers.

Yep. Good call.

I like Joel Kinnaman.

Altered Carbon S1 was pretty alright. I enjoyed the premise.

S2 was pure unadulterated shite.

Iirc it was supposed to be one season only and then they realised they had a hit and altered S1 finale, absurdly so, and it tried its best to recover but the writers couldn’t?

And here I was thinking you guys were talking about the original - and superior - Danish version!

Bl00dy sceptic tanks, the lot of ya! ;)

I really like 'What Remains', so great call Cookie.

Speaking of UK shows, while it won't be for everyone due to its utter bleakness, I think this series may be the one that best fits the criteria... And it contains - imo - the best acting performance of the past decade (too bad Stephen Graham & the series itself got Chernobyl'd at all the awards that year), as well as a real star-making turn by Niamh Algar:

Do you need subtitles?

I rate him highly fwiw

If you're talking about the Danish version of 'The Killing; Yes.

If you're talking about Stephen Graham's mumbling version of talking; Sometimes.

some that come to mind:

Quarry (2015)
got a lot of love here on bigfooty, me and dad were fans of it. Cancelled after S1.

Hit & Miss (2012)
Chloe Sevigny a transwoman contract killer spending a bit of time in Yorkshire, was a decent bit of genre representation at the time. Didn’t return/soft-cancelled

Earth 2 (1994)
made a big impression on me as a kid, revisited in 2019 and still adored it, very cult-friendly sci-fi. Cancelled after S1.

anything Jimmy McGovern associated tends to be excellent drama, e.g. The Street (2006-09), Accused (2010-12), Redfern Now 2012-13), etc. Tend to be critically lauded at the time but you don’t hear them mentioned too much down the track. Beyond those mentioned, a lot of hidden gems worth a look, he has a certain stamp of quality.

Talking to a Stranger (1966)
BBC 4 part miniseries from different family perspectives, groundbreaking for its time

The Great War (1964)
extensive 26-part doc on WW1, narrated by Michael Redgrave. The following WW2 one with Olivier seems more remembered, but I thought this was an incredible production for its time, and the sheer amount of archival WWI content is almost hard to believe.

in recent years I felt Berlin Station deserved more love, brilliant spy series that one

Where would one locate The Great War?

Think about this re the World at War

It was made in 1973

That’s 23 years after 1945

Sept 11 2001 was 23 years ago

It was very close to the end of WW2 and one of the few documentaries that contained such a breadth of participants
