Would like to get Luamon Lual across from the dons. Hasn’t signed a new contract as of yet. Untried & from our NGA.
Is he any good? If he's a small (181cm) and hasn't yet played a game is he worth pursuing?

A lot of us were hoping to get him in the 2023 draft but canny Essendon used pick 39 to get him (just before the pick 40 threshold) so we weren't allowed to match. Clearly Dodoro won the draft yet again.

That meant we had to settle for a little-known country kid called Freijah instead.

Obviously he still has some developing to do, but his VFL stats are pretty ordinary and hasn't really stood out at VFL level yet. Might not be long for Bomber's main list... Would love if we could get him for Footscray to track his development.

He still has some good traits with his speed & running ability. That could be developed as a small defender. Has talent - I’d back our development in over ESsendon.

At the time Smith was drafted, he was widely known as an intensely dedicated trainer who ran 400s after losing matches and counted his macros fastidiously, and a teetotal church goer. Some people change. Fame and money does things to people, especially people as young as him.
Church Goer - ding ding ding!!

I remember how pissed off this board was at dodo when he took him at 39. Think il take this Freijah kid over him

I'm strangely ok with this. He's historically been a dead eye and, despite his looks as the ultimate eastern suburbs rich kid, seems pretty down to earth. Went to a public school, trained as a sparkie. Maybe without the ridiculous haircut, he'd fit in?!
He’d need a complete makeover, perhaps including cosmetic surgery, before facing Bulldog fans. Even then it could be touch and go 😵‍💫

Could be Bailey Laurie. Can’t get a look in, has only played 3 non-sub games and has had 14, 18, 19 touches in them. Gets a bit of it at VFL level and has good tackle numbers (had 20 in one game last year!). Doesn’t really hit the scoreboard much though so assume he’s more the high half forward type

I think this is most likely considering as many others have stated Melbourne's likely unwillingness to trade Chandler and his potential to move into the midfield which is not what we'd be looking for at the dogs.

We were close to getting Xavier O’Halloran in the last trade period — do we go again?

Really have zero idea what he’d even bring. He doesn’t win a heap of ball, doesn’t kick goals and isn’t a best 22 player at the Giants.

It’s just playing around the fringes for no real solution.

Davidson has more than filled that gap

If he was a DFA, maybe, but I wouldn't even be trading a 3rd rounder for him

Averaging 10 touches a game with minimal scoreboard impact. No thank you

Spargo is out of contract so not him. By my eye it has to be one of Laurie, Chandler or Tholstrup, McAdam if you consider them smalls (I'd call them mediums personally).
Tholstrup will be a serious player so I guess he's untouchable and not really a small forward anyway (closer to Hynes than anything)

Classy small forward def a need. No idea if this applies to any of the Melbourne forwards but we might think one of them has some more potential to hit, like the Kennedy acquisition.

Dolan is one step towards it but another, more experienced option would be good. Dolan may be a couple seasons off accumulating the quantity needed. Be good to have a couple options for reliable delivery to Naughton and Darcy, ideally also a scoreboard threat themselves.

McNeil and VDM on a (so far) small sample have improved but still more on the stopgap role player level. Sounds like we’re aiming for an upgrade which is good.

Normally the dogs get the picks right. But you have to wonder whether they do their due diligence/dick head research.
We drafted a fitness obsessed teetotaler. He changed once he got online attention.

Players can change a lot in the system. Sicily would have gone first round except clubs had reservations over his competitiveness! Bont was a low production flanker for most of his draft year.

In future we need to avoid recruiting players who have the potential to become the most attractive young player in the comp, gain millions of instagram followers and become a slightly odd personality as a result.
There goes my AFL dream...

For me, this is one of the big things to come out of this and tragically we are uniquely positioned to learn from it.

There absolutely must be early indicators in character assessment that point to this sort of potential outcome. And we should leave no stone unturned to find them before they bite us.
The one I don’t get was the recruitment of Charlie Clarke… kid was known bad news around my area for years before being drafted

Yes there’s obviously the possibility kids mature as they move out of the teenage years but for a second round pick you’d want a bit more clarity

Agreed but we weren't picking from many good options in that draft - basically all the players drafted immediately after didn't get a game, and the list spots we otherwise would have used to taken similar 17 year olds who would have gone on to also be off an AFL list by now instead went to Baker, Poulter and Gallagher (who was eligible for the draft the year before).

It's actually one of the more underrated elements of why our list remains in such good shape - while a typical list in the rest of the league wiped out 2-3 years with 2-3 players by overrating the draft pool the secuirtiy of having Poulter, Baker as mature depth has given us more freedom and flexibility for the years after

I think he was largely buying low and hoping for the best. When you look at who was drafted later in the draft there aren’t many standouts.

May depend on how Treloar comes back and if we get Butters.

Bont, Butters, Treloar, Richards, Libba, Kennedy, Freijah may not work.

That said, I'd love for him to go around again even if he played VFL games now and then. Would be great for the kids.
It would only be a problem for one year, surely both Libba and Treloar don’t keep playing in 2027

Great problem to have though

I dunno Mof. Did he really change?

As the saying goes, give me the boy till he is 7 and I'll show you the man.

Some guys mature late and come good. Stevie J a classic example.

25 appears to be a common age for males to really reach emotional maturity.

I know he cleared his instagram when he got drafted but it was definitely full of eshays posing in front of graffiti walls for a while there. I guess we banked on his talent and the club environment being able to outweigh that.
