Top 10 inside 50 targets in the comp vs goals produced

Thats the thing that annoys me about Pavlich, he is the best! He is the best CHF in the competition and just cause he plays for WA team means people dont rate him along with Riewoldt, Brown, ABlett, Judd. As a CHF he is better than Riewoldt and Brown. Pavlich has been the best player in the competition for the last 5 years..... he is probably one of the best players ever in the history of the WA clubs.... name an eagles player who was better? Name a FREMANTLE player that was better?

He's as close to the perfect footballer as you'll see, can do just about anything on the field, and do it well.

Look forward to hopefully seeing him play a fair bit of finals footy in the next few years, I've got no doubt he'll stand up when it matters.

Imagine if the Crows got him in 2002, when he wanted to come home, but we went for bloody Wayne Carey instead... Cost us flags :(

Go to player rankings and choose the stat.

Yep you go to player rankings, select totals rather than averages, and then you can choose whatever stat you like. In this case I50 target, and goals.

Then just work out the percentage.

Everyone talks about the Tigers choosing Tambling over Franklin. But that picks isn't so bad, as Tamling is still a good to very good player. But Fiora over Pavlich? My God!

Why just dump on Richmond?

Taking Fraser over Pavlich cost the Pies two Premierships, without a doubt. And even Freo rated Haselby ahead of Pav. Drafting's dead-easy a decade after the fact.

Yep imagine Pavlich in the 05-06 prelim finals? Pretty sure you lost the 06 one by 10 points.... Someone like Pavlich is the difference......

.... just goes to show how horridly bad Hawkins and Mooney have been....

Mooney has kicked 21 goals YTD and Buddy 22. If Mooney's output is "horribly bad" then I guess 22 goals by Buddy is just plain "bad".

Let's not forget that Geelong spreads its goalkicking across the team. Last year it had more players with 20+ goals than any other team, and is on target for the same this year, with Stevie J (28); JPod (23); Mooney (21); Ablett (17); Hawkins (16); Byrnes (15); and Chapman (14).

For those who may find this remotely interesting....

Updated figures after round 13 for the top 10 inside 50 targets and goals produced. Also a couple of honourable mentions to guys who feature highly in goals produced with less opportunity.

Fev 190 times = 42 goals - 22%
Hall 167 times = 46 goals - 27%
J Riewoldt 154 times = 48 goals - 32%
Brown 121 times = 35 goals - 28%
Tippett 116 times = 25 goals - 21%
Johnson 111 times = 36 goals - 32% *21 goal assists, highest in the comp
Franklin 111 times = 30 goals - 27%
Roughead 106 times = 28 goals - 26%
Kennedy 104 times = 35 goals - 33%
Pavlich 92 times = 40 goals - 43%

Honourable Mentions
Podsiadly 71 times = 29 goals - 41%
B Green = 77 times = 29 goals - 37%

As I mentioned last time, I realise this probably there are probably heaps of contributing factors, and it's not the be all and end all. I don't include small forwards given they often crumb opportunities from others being the I50 target.

The quality would have a lot to do with it. So many times we kick to Buddy or Roughie and either put it at their feet, or sit it one their head. The other thing is how many defenders they have to contend with. If Buddy is in forward 50 there can be 2 or 3 minding him. Roughie's kicking would also be destroying his numbers.

That said, fantastic effort by Pods and Pav. Although the fact that Geelong's forwards have a better percentage, but less kicked to them just shows that they pick the right target more often. No wonder they're still the best going around.

Great stats and thread! :)

Interesting to see the actual targets going forward and how they individually perform.

Gotta love the Pav... and those others who are targeted less but still get the job done.

Happy with Kennedy's output as an Eagles supporter

I'd be confident in my thinking that other supporters wouldn't put it down to the quality of the service

Fair call, no arguments here...when is Daniel Kerr looking like returning?

shows that if we actually get the ball down to JK + Lecras, they can score goals consistently.

we just dont get it to them enough, or with enough precision.

pavlich's record is insanely good, what a footballer.

Nothing to gain by bringing him back this year anyway, may as well leave him on the LTI and find out if one of our rookie list has got what it takes.

Part of why Pav's is so good is perhaps it's inflated by those times he goes into the centre for the bounce wins the clearance and kicks it from 60m+.

So technically it's not a target inside 50 if he gets it himself and kicks it from outside.

Everyone passed on Pav. He missed out entirely the year before he was drafted.

Ummm, what about the number of times the forward wins the ball and kicks the goal, and it is isn't even kicked to them . . . i.e. Franklin on the wing, etc.

Stat is bogus.

Would it be fair to say Fev, Brown and Hall drop a lot of easy marks, and that's why their stats are inflated a bit? Or deflated, which ever way you want to describe it.
