Opinion The Shield and Ribbon: Updating the Sacred

Having thought about it I’m kind of happy now to drop the motto. Strength through loyalty has been holding us back. It should be strength through success.

The more I see it, the more I hate it
I was lucky enough to go to the unveiling yesterday and the first thing I saw were the glaring problems of mediocre logo craftsmanship. This was exaggerated by the CEO parroting jargon about the need to update the crest for a 'digital age'. This would be good and all, but the logo doesn't even do that. I opened my phone and saw this email below. The weird need to muddy the logo with a weird double stroke (one white, one black) serves no purpose at all. Even the mid war folk who created the 1933 logo were able to use a strong single stroke.

The 2 strokes, which turn into 3 on a non-white background.

3!! pointless strokes. Plus the joy inconsistent reds.

Losing the ribbon is a mistake. It has been on every Saints' jumper since 1933, and carried a classiness and classic feel. It create a balance of when used with the top heavy crest shape. The new 'ribbon', if you can call it that, clashes heavily with the classic and simple crest with another thin and sharp stroke.

I wish we took the route of a cleaning up, rather than a redesign. See numerous EPL and European soccer clubs simply cleaning up timeless logos, instead of changing them.

Lastly the motto. Only using it in marketing is a bit of a kick in the nuts to those supporters who love the club and its historical players. Loyalty is what has kept us existing. I think of all the crazy idiots like me who have shown up week on week to support the team when we'd surely get smashed and barely getting 20,000 at a home game. I think of Barks, Buckets and Roo who said no to getting more money to go to bigger and stronger clubs. A bit of the soul has been lost with the removal of the motto.

The new one doesn’t have a double stroke in the first example. The negative space of the white (1 - in your markup) gives the appearance of one. But it’s not actually a full line. And the second new one doesn’t even need the thin white around it. They can drop that off if they want.

Your version literally actually has a full double stroke around it.

Frankly, I prefer the saints one to your version. And the banner has just been shrunk, it’s still there. It’s all opinions so don’t get so worked up. No old player is crying in bed because it says the motto on the collar instead of the logo.

The horizontal part of the new cross is higher, right?
Yep, needed to be balance out the ribbon now going over the shield.

Funny that some of us were worried the cross might be removed for diversity reasons when in reality they actually made it look more Christian.

Is that all?

I demand more loyalty

We are owed nothing
I didn't claim to be "owed" anything. I'm well aware that clubs, like all businesses, care more about attracting new customers/fans than retaining their existing ones, despite studies showing it's far more expensive to do so. I foolishly thought that loyalty might be a two way street, and the club might think of me as more than a number and a dollar sign. That's clearly not the case.

I'm still not knocking anyone who likes the logo, or insulting their intelligence. I'm saying I don't like it. I'm allowed to not like it without being belittled by strangers online.

That would be on a coloured background. Compare mine on a white background and you'll see what I mean. It has one stroke to the Saints' current one having 2. Goes back to K.I.S.S. A kid should be able to draw a logo from memory.

I feel the lack of the old ribbon leaves it feeling incomplete. The balance is off with nothing 'rounding out' the bottom of the shield. Not to mention a motto so synonymous with the history of the club being shunned for simplicities' sake is the marketing version of shooting yourself in the foot. A lot of the Aussie Rules' community know strength through loyalty is a uniquely St Kilda thing. Half the comp would kill for that brand recognition.

I'm so worked up I can't feel my hands. Literally shaking rn

Played around some more.
Got rid of the ribbon shadows that make no sense given that shape of the ribbon.
Also, the text on the ribbon should be curved (if the ribbon is curved) or straight if the ribbon is straight.

Looks like little T-rex arms sticking out the side haha!

In terms of the new logo, I don't mind it. The old one was definitely fine and just a clean up and boldening of the line work would have been great. But we live in the age of needing re-brands etc! I think it will definitely grow on us.

You’re critiquing the new one because “a kid should be able to draw a logo from memory.” But also “the new one is shunning history for simplicity”? So which simpler?

Also, at best 50% of saint supporters would know “strength through loyalty”. And 0% of oppo supporters would know it. You are dreaming that anyone is jealous of our motto.

The form of the new crest is poorly done. Pointless strokes and inconsistent line weights. Look at the famous crests of Barcelona and PSG - simple uniform lines, such as kid could draw them.
The features and meaning behind those soccer crests are plenty. The old crest struck this balance, though just needed thicker line work.

Doubt that ass plucked stat about our fans and the wider community, but okie dokie.

Doesn't it embody who we are as a club? Would any other club exist if it weren't for the loyalty of the supporter base like ours? Save our Saints, the move back to Moorabbin, slowly scrapping back to being debt free etc. My old man and I have been putting decades of time and money into the club thanks to that loyalty. It's the nostalgia and heritage that kept us going to games when we knew a smacking was incoming. That heritage is missing from the new logo. So I reiterate, half the comp would kill for that brand recognition and distinction from the other 17 clubs.

I'd be shocked if only 50% knew it, I've always considered it one of our most iconic features.
I'd guess more than 50% would know the acting motto (allowing for spelling and pronunciation errors)

No one said u stated u are owed anything

That was me making a general statement that none of us are

This is the internet tho
You’re going to get people giving u shit about an opinion whether u like it or not

We either have to learn to leave with that kind of attitude and ignore it or just don’t be a part of the big wide web

I actually prefer the previous one as well

In fact some of the posters in here come up with better designs imo

I’m not a fan. It just looks plain weird to me. I like the change to the cross, I understand the change to “St. Kilda” but the ribbon is shithouse. It’s like they wanted the ribbon totally gone but got some negative feedback so that just slapped a weird looking one on as an afterthought.
But what I particularly dislike is the look of it on our jumper. Love that it’s larger, love that it’s back in the larger black box but the logo itself looks terrible. Regardless of what our corporate logo looks like we should always have our traditional logo on our jumper, it just looks right and pays homage to our history. IMG_0382.jpeg IMG_0383.jpeg

How do Carlton's supporters feel about it? Is it still part of your club logo? What would happen if it wasn't?

I like our Latin motto but I'm not fundamentally opposed to removing it from the club logo: there are many contexts where it has already been erased and the scroll remained due to illegibility at small scale or difficulty in producing it (scarves etc), The G-Train's club jacket in a recent club video just one example.

I like the new simplified crest more and more each time I see it, but then again I'm not one for too much tradition. I find it conservative and limiting. I think the designers struck the right balance between necessary modernisation and respect for the club's past. I accept it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I've been a Saints fanatic for many years and I am very happy with it, definitely better than any other proposal I've seen.

However, one area where i agree with SFGiant is the pinstripe effect around the border. I dont mind it, but it's not really necessary and would be simpler if they just made the black stroke the outermost border - on black backgrounds, it would just disappear and the white border inside would become the outer border which would be fine - no need for an additional white border around the whole lot.

I've always remembered it because it's on the logo I grew up with (literally the year I was born), but I'm not sure on others as we keep backflipping on it.

I did locate a membership card/booklet from 1935 with the motto, so I would assume it has been around for much longer than that - however, it hasn't been as prominent in our branding as yours has in the past.

Collingwood and Essendon have one too, but apart from diehard fans, I doubt anyone else would know it.

I am definitely on board with you and SFgiant's points, the pinstripe stroke is weird and I'd rather there not be a ribbon at all if they were just going to do that with it. You've done it before, and it's on the shorts without one.

There was also one from 1948 with the same layout.
