Walker is legitimately one of the better defender of smalls in the league when you consider how it's been coming in there this year. I'm going to be harsh but there were some morons on here after the Adelaide game saying Walker is a terrible actual defender, beggars belief...
A lot depends what style of forward he is asked to play on, the way we used him in the Adelaide game was just dumb, was like asking Aaron Sandilands to defend Eddie Betts, totally pointless selection / coaching. When played against the right type of forward Walker is just great - and I'd also love to see him get stints (short bursts not whole quarters) on the wings at Optus, his pace and drive is great.

Wingers need to be pacey burst players, this idea that somehow a slower player like Brayshaw can be a wing is just doddery, they get left behind against real wings. Credit to Rossco for recognising that Mason Wood had the true pace to be a impact wing. I thought last year when we finally moved Acres to the wing we had worked it out, pace is key for wings, but no, we keep playing Hughes as a "wing".

I thought he had lost his one-on-one ability which I always considered to be one of his greatest strengths. He got it back against Cameron. Great performance.

Can you elaborate with specifics? How was Walker being used in the Adelaide game? Are you talking just the player he was sent to? Or about playing tight versus loose? Too far up the ground? Was there someone else playing the role you think Walker should have had? Or should we have had someone else in instead of Walker?

He’s good at the quick ground ball players. He got played on Rankine. Who plays taller than his height, Adelaide isolated Rankine and just popped the ball on their heads. He beat Walker in the air. Chapman is a far better match up for Rankine than Walker.

Riding the bumps: Hawks building strong midfield group
An article about hawks midfield and how they improved and on the way up.. May be we can also try to be on the same path by injecting big bodied strong and quick players like Erasmus, Hayden Young and Johnson when he is ready?

Erasmus playing today, Jonno would be if not for suspension plus we've got options from the backline if preferred or needed. NOD on the wing, added to Brayshaw and Serong who are young, it's looking very good for the future in that area of the ground.

So may positives in tonight's game.

Firstly how good was it to have a game against an undermanned team around the same age and experience as us and get a big win. A confidence building win.

Secondly, the young fellas in Jackson, Amiss, Erasmus, Walker, Driz! How good to see them all playing well together. Many more to come and can't wait for Jonno to join them.

Thirdly, easy to see that our gameplan is quick and attacking if we're allowed to apply it. Too often this year against older, bigger and more experienced opponents we haven't been able to apply it leading to unfair criticism of our coaches.

Once we get our best out there and develop together we'll be good again. It'll take awhile but we'll get there as shown tonight. Onwards and upwards.

Erasmus is a big positive. Liked Jackson's game. It may suggest 3 talls works better or maybe it was just a coincidence. Brayshaw was good around the ground but our clearance work just isn't good enough. Better teams will hurt us more. Hopefully, Erasmus, Johnson, O'Driscoll and Jackson can help with our clearances over time.
Nice to have a comfortable win.
Bannas had a good game but beating up on weaker teams shouldn't be enough. We want the same next week.

Soft win is a good confidence booster for young players. In particular Frederick, Amiss and Jackson who all kicked multiple goals. Was also a chance for Young and Ryan to get back to aggressive, risk-taking kicking. Maybe we will get our AA Luke Ryan back?

It was nice to get a win but from the first minute pretty much, the game felt like one of those pre season scratchies.
We need a big win to ignite this season and really get the fans up and firing.
Next 3 weeks are huge before the bye - Sydney, Geelong and Melbourne.

3 wins out of 3 - we are BACK
2 wins out of 3 - really good effort and a finals chance still
1 win out of 3 - the absolute minimum expectation.
0 wins out of 3 - we are looking at bottom 4 and the entire club will be under massive pressure.

Well having Treacy means you can shuffle the talls around. I like more options 😜
Spine has to be strong, it’s what the Vics do well and it’s their league.

I can’t see Treacy going anywhere
The club will back him in and do what it takes to keep him particularly given T-Bone is pretty much done .
He’s exactly what they need and worked his ass off at Peel
Had a very good game yesterday I thought.
He and Erasmus bring great pressure and hopefully both will be given a few more games to show their worth
