Is it going too far to suggest that Webster's selection saved the series for us?

On SM-G970F using BigFooty.com mobile app
Put it this way, if the selectors agreed with Langer that we shouldnt unsettle the change room and stick with MM for game 5 then we would be lamenting a 2-2 series draw.
Webster was simply outstanding and close to the most influential player (hard to go past a 10 wicket performance). Both time he came in under immense pressureespecialy in the 1st innings and allowed us to post a score on par with India rather than the sub100 score we would most likely ha e scored if MM was playing.
Bowling 12 overs or so for sfa runs also allowed our main quicks the rest they neededto ensure they bowled with impact each time.
Then to top it off he kept his head and brought it home with a 39 no. I think he now averages 98.
I think he will be part of the set up for some time. He Head and Green should make up our middle order.

Langer is stupid

He looks a better player than I gave him credit for. That's as good a debut as you could wish for and like you said, his bowling output was most helpful even if he only took one wicket (plus two dropped). Batting-wise he looked very assured both front and back.

If they had of rested starc who was obviously cooked and played jhy , Webster wouldn't have needed to bowl so many overs .
Marsh deserved to be dropped though and Webster played very well .

I don't think he's stupid but he's loyal to a fault.

The idea that it would disrupt the change room is silly. These are professionals who all know that their position in the XI is contingent upon performance. If anything the change room would probably be fired up about their teammate debuting, and potentially being more than a passenger in their side.

I'm fairly sure Gambhir's comments were in reference to Ronald McDonald saying this in the presser after Day 1:

My conversation to (Konstas) was just around whether he’s okay. Clearly the way that India celebrated that, it was quite intimidating,” McDonald told reporters at stumps on day two.

“To have an opposition swarm the non-striker like that, we have got a duty of care to our player to make sure he’s okay and in a head space to go out the next day and perform.

So to be fair, I think GG might have a point with some of what he said.

“It’s a tough sport played by tough men,” Gambhir said.

“You can’t be that soft, as simple as it can get. I don’t think there was anything intimidating about it.

It's handbags at 10 paces stuff. At the end of the day, Australia won the BGT, Kohli is a shadow of his best self and was always on the verge of self-combusting, while Steve Smith will spend the next few months unable to clear his OCD with being stuck on 9,999. Perfect!

Good series, I thought Alex Carey had a good series overall. No massive scores but a fair few innings where he outperformed the batsmen above him at the very least.

Cummins one of our best overall, even today getting a few quick wickets to keep the margin within reach, to not make the dropped catch costly was a big mental win.

Head set this series up for us, Cummins and Boland finished it.

Batting lineup looks better, Webster is our all rounder (can field like Green as well).

Khawaja, Labs and Smith don't fill me with confidence but I think all 3 will be safe for now.

Despite Smith's two centuries he averaged 35 for the year and then didn't do much at the SCG in the new year albeit on a difficult pitch. I guess he doesn't look "back" because there weren't consistent 40+ scores, when he was at his best he would regularly post 40+ with a few centuries.

Labs had the twin 70's at an important time but got out to some poor shots as well.

Both Labs and Smith really thrived on the MCG pitch, which was by far the easiest to bat on. Outside of that things were tough going and neither looked to be in great touch.

Konstas can stay, let him learn on the job. Will be a good inclusion long term.

Hazelwood and Starc, how much longer? Not sure but Hazelwood does tend to get injured a lot which is a shame considering how good he is.

I understand that it’s a business and everything, I just wish that the word Australia would appear prominently somewhere here, rather than making it look like a combined side of Toyota / HCL Tech (whatever that is) players winning some sort of insurance company event.

At worst it was a bit cringey from Bumrah and especially Kohli for how they focused their reaction of dismissing Usman onto Konstas. Otherwise real storm in a tea cup type stuff. The game was enthralling enough without needing the media to cook up this nothing of a sub-plot.
