As a kid growing up, why would you dream of wearing the baggy green?
It will be getting an IPL contract.

Why on earth would someone like FMG dream of playing test cricket?

Greg Chappell wrote an article on the decline in batting last week.
Pretty said it was due to T20 and the power of the new bats.

India invest in T20 more than anyone, and they seem to be going alright
They do for sure, the IPL is no doubt the premier T20 comp in the world. But this has done wonders for cricket in the country (interestingly had the opposite affect her in AUS).

IMO, India cricket is having their World Series cricket moment, where it is the hottest commodity.

Pre IPL India, they didn't really have a commercially viable domestic league as such. Now cricket viewership (and therefore interest/participation rates) are through the roof. It's now not just a select few of the best of the elite that can play serious level cricket, and make money from it. Their are pathways to cricket being a career for all backgrounds.

This flows through to all levels.

We in Aus are a very different socially society to India. It's hard to compare the two. 20 years ago, youngsters either played footy in winter or cricket in summer (maybe netball if you were a girl).

Now the options are basically endless, the elite talent pool is draining. Add to the fact that we all have less time these days, it's hard to justify allocating 5 days to watch a game of cricket (or pretty much a whole day Saturday if you play locally). This goes with parents deciding on a sport for their kids as well. T20 offers that sweet spot for those that still enjoy cricket.

At the more professional end of the stick, the options for a lower ranked player to make money on the T20 circuit are plentiful, way more than trying your luck to break into the AU test team.

I also feel CA have dropped the ball big time. The TV deal, locking international games behind a pay wall is crazy.
They have been left behind by the rest of the world in their views that Test cricket is still the pinnacle of cricket. It's not any more (maybe an ashes series, but that could become obsolete quickly).

I'll thrown an edit in, I agree with others saying they have neglected the shield in preference to the BBL. But this is the double edged sword, they see the Test format as the top level, but chase the money with the BBL. You can't produce good long format crickets if you neglect the shield. They are different games.

They also mishandled the BBL league. Those first seasons were nuts. Short sharp series with the best international players playing, they were relevant. They got greedy, diluted the talent and the product has suffered since.
And the test team. Where to start really. The current team has to be one of the least liked Australian national sport teams by the general public in my memory.
The selectors refuse to pick anyone outside of their bubble. Players play on for far too long (warner/smith etc). They are comfortable and seem uninterested at times (as WC fans, similarities to credits crew)
Why would say a Jhye Richardson bother to try busting his nut to break into the test when he has no chance of selection, and when he dose, he will be too old or broken down already to make a decent career of it.
The pitches we have served up lately have been nothing but trash roads (remember the MCG pitch). Snooze fests.
Scheduling Tests to start on a Wednesday.

Honestly, save for Ashes and India series and maybe the Boxing Day test (although I went a couple years back to day 3 vs Pakistan at the G and the places was deserted), I see in 20 years time the summer of cricket looking extremely different. We won't be playing test series against other nations in the prime slots like we do now.
If we do play them, they will be early summer/winter in places like FNQ/NT, and boutique ovals (North Sydney, junction oval, WACA if they get the development correct)

Having a population of over a billion doesn't hurt.

The also lost their last series at home 3 nil to NZ.
Not to mention the last 50 ODI WC and WTC to us as well.
Just pointing out that I don't think you can blame T20 (a format which Australia doesn't pursue as heavily as others, we don't even have our best players available in the Big Bash) for the performance.

India were rolled for 36 in the first test last time around and yet won that series.

Anything can happen. Plenty of time for soul searching between test 1 and 2. Just look at the difference between India vs NZ and the India of the last few days
YEp, there is a lot of emotional over reaction going on. As the saying goes, nothing is as good or as bad as it seems.
Im fully aware that this may be the decline of the current incumbent team However, I think we should hold fire for at least 2 more tests before looking for another Argus review.
Our bowling stocks are strong but there is concern over our Shield batting options.

This is such a miserable display. But who do you bring in as a replacement? Neser and Boland are good enough, but no better than the incumbents. Maybe try Konstas and Webster for Labuschagne and Marsh, with Smith to 3 and McSweeney to 4?

Most likely the team stays unchanged, and we hope for the best. But we’re up against it with talents like Bumrah and Jaiswal. How did they lose to NZ?

Neser is injured.
I still think the attack is ok.

Boland won't make a difference.

It's the batting which is killing us.

I think the issue with T20 isn't so much the changing of focus on being able to bat long to being able to hit 360 degrees (but I do think it is a small part of it). I think the issue is that domestically all the emphasis has been on the BBL to the detriment of the Sheild. Australia had the strongest domestic long format league in the world and could have produced 3 top level test teams during the 2000s. Since BBL, Shield has taken a back seat in terms of scheduling and interest from up-coming young cricketers and we are about to find out how that will impact our Test teams.

Not for this performance specifically, but you can’t deny it’s at least part of the reason that the cupboard is so bare in the Sheild.

You’d have to be an absolute cricket purist growing up to want to pursue red ball cricket over the T20 franchise circuit.

Look at Tim David for example. Talented cricketer with zero interest in red ball cricket, just goes from franchise to franchise earning hundreds of thousands of dollars for a handful of games. He’ll be set for life by 30.

Like Ian Chappell said, "with the test layers not playing Shield, it's hard to get an idea on players as they're not playing against the best".

The bowlers have being carrying this team for far too long.
And Cummins can't rescue the team with his bat every time the batters fail.
A match like this happens when the bowlers have a rare down day or two, because really the batters performed as per recent history would suggest they would against the highest quality bowling.
We won't do this, but we should be dropping Marnus and bringing in his replacement for next year's Ashes now.
