Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool FC confirmed today that Ian Ayre had been appointed as the Club's new Managing Director and Damien Comolli has been promoted to Director of Football.

Ayre has been the Liverpool FC Commercial Director since July 2007 and Comolli has been with the Club since November 2010 as Director of Football Strategy.

Principal Owner John Henry said: "Ian has enormous experience gained from his work in the sports and media businesses over the past 15 years and we are delighted today to announce this significant appointment. We conducted an extensive recruitment search and met with outstanding candidates who sought this role but in the end, after having worked with Ian and other top executives within the club, we realised that Ian had all of the attributes necessary to lead the Club forward. Ian has been doing an outstanding job driving commercial revenues and has a proven track record in successfully leading and developing businesses in a number of different regions and sectors of importance to Liverpool FC. The Standard Chartered kit sponsorship deal, which Ian spearheaded, is but one example of how his prior business experience matches the needs of the Club, and he will help us continue to succeed in the commercial arena going forward.

"But importantly, Ian is also from Liverpool and understands the relationships between the Club, the supporters and the city. He will play a key role in all of our future plans."

He added: "I am also delighted to announce the promotion of Damien Comolli to Director of Football. In the short time that Damien has been at the Club, he has impressed us greatly with his knowledge of the sport, his work ethic and his incisive intelligence. He is a clear thinker and understands exactly what is needed to form a long-term, consistent approach with the philosophy we all share here. He has a track record of identifying young talent and has already made significant contributions to the First Team and Academy.

"Damien played a leading role in our January transfer window activity with the recruitment of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. These two additions will play a significant role in the future of the Club. All of us at Liverpool Football Club who have been working on a day-to-day basis with Damien believe he will be a key contributor for many, many years here as we build a football operation second to none."

Chairman Tom Werner commented: "We've worked closely with Ian since coming to Liverpool and we have great confidence in his management and leadership skills. Also, as a life-long fan of the Club, he has been instrumental in bringing John and I up to speed on the traditions and history of this great Club and specifically, what it means to follow the Liverpool way. Ian has been instrumental to us in stabilizing things after we purchased the Club and helping us with a re-set to put us on a solid path to move forward. We consider this one more big step in taking the Club to exactly where supporters and we want to go."

He added: "Damien has already demonstrated a thorough understanding of what a modern football Club needs to succeed in an ever more competitive environment. He has made a tremendous contribution to our scouting, recruitment and player development so far. This promotion will see him assume extra responsibilities including overseeing areas such as performance analysis, medical provision, and team administration."

John Henry added: "With these key appointments today, the future of Liverpool Football Club is in very good hands. Tom and I are extraordinarily excited to be working with Ian and Damien as we do the things that must be done to move the Club forward in the 21st century."

Ian Ayre commented: "Obviously being from the city and having supported the club all my life, I have a deep understanding of what this special football club means to so many people. In my four years as Commercial Director, we've been extremely successful in growing our revenues, but I've also gained a thorough understanding of the challenges facing the Club. We have been through some difficult times, but we find ourselves today with a great team of people all working together for the same goal. An important part of this new job will be to work closely with all our different stakeholders and help us move forward together. John and Tom have a clear vision for rebuilding the Club and bringing back success and I'm delighted to be able to help shape that future. It is a very proud moment for myself and my family and I am honoured to be given the opportunity."

Damien Comolli commented: "I'm delighted to have been offered this promotion and very proud that I am going to be able to make significant contributions to the development of this great Club. It has been an exciting five months and I think all of us recognise that we have made a great deal of progress in many different areas. However, there is a lot of hard work ahead and with the backing of our owners and their commitment to the Club, I'm confident we will get it right."

Can't blame them for promoting Ian, he has done a good job so far.

Damien was pretty much exercising that role anyway so this is just making it official.

Congrats to Ian Ayre and Comolli.

Comolli will have a tough job this summer transfer window recruiting serious talent if there is no Europe on offer. True test of his ability.

Ian Ayre home grown as the article said. Liverpool born and bred with a focus on the Liverpool Way.

Would rather Sanchez or Gervinho.

id rather ronaldo or bale, but in all seriousness, i dont think we are a realistic chance of getting sanchez, and gervinho is just about to lead his side to the ligue 1 title and champions league qualification, so i cant see him leaving lille for a side that isnt in the champions league.

fingers crossed comolli weaves some magic and we can pick up a couple of hidden gems, because if we spend big and the players flop, we will be up shit creek. i have no doubt fenway will give us a big kitty to spend, but it will be one big spend and then little top ups every window, not the city model of trial and error.

Sebastian Larsson is the one you should go after IMO. He's a dead-ball specialist which is exactaly what you need and he'd complement Carroll very well. You could get him cheap as well.

Stuart Downing is the other one that would probably fit into your lineup well.

Think we will be aiming much higher than Seb Larsson believe it or not.

I think Downing will stay at Villa while Young will be allowed to leave and it will be a battle between us, City and maybe Utd for his signiture.

for the first time in a while i actually feel quite confident and comfortable that we will persue some good players and bring some talent to our club.. We can't offer championsleague football right now.. but any player with ambition can see the direction we are heading and believe we can still attract quality.

I don't think it's always about the overall quality of a player you should factor in (even though Larsson is actually pretty good). It's the fact that he complements a player like Carroll very well.

I'm fairly sure Young stressed his desire to play Champions League football so you'd think he'd be off to a team like City or United. Someone like Downing or N'Zogbia will probably be more realistic targets and they'd hop right into your lineup, providing you're willing to bench Dirk Kuyt...

...Speaking of which, guess who's close to penning a new contract:

Sanchez would cost way too much. Gervinho simply would be unnecessary because he isnt a LW, the area of real concern.

Realistic options will be Elia, Marin or more than likely Ashley Young

Would love Young and Marin but that could end up being close enough to 35m.

Kuyt will be good to have as a depth option so I don't mind him signing a new deal.

I seriously doubt we will sign two expensive wingers, probably one like Ashley Young and then someone on the cheap. This will allows us to spend decent cash on a new LB and hopefully a new CB.

IMO,

Wing: Marin and Downing
LB: ???
CB: Sahko/Samba

Coentrao is reportedly of to Bayern Munich.

I think as far as left back goes you will try desperately to sign one of Enrique or Baines. Everton will tell you to piss off. Enrique will join a Champs League club and you will be forced to make a play for a risky option from the Bundesliga/Serie A. You will probably sign someone you have not heard much about like Kadecel from Leverkusen.

Baines is a Liverpool supporter and they are broke, stranger things have happened than Everton selling us players. Pretty sure we have done more business with them than any other club.

But I don't expect him to play for us, I think Enrique is the most likely out of the lot we have been linked with so far.

Would love Baines.

Leaving Everton for Liverpool rarely happens though. Does he still harbour those feelings towards Liverpool? Get it done Commolli. Only 26 and in career best form.

Daniel Pacheco is set to join Championship side Norwich City on emergency loan until May 31, 2011.

The deal will go through once clearance is received from the Football League. Liverpool's No.12 is currently away on international duty with Spain U21s preparing for Thursday night's match with France.

Norwich boss Paul Lambert said: "Dani is a lad we've seen playing for Liverpool's first team this season and I've been talking to Kenny Dalglish about him for a few weeks now.

"He's technically very good as you'd expect having been with clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool and the fact he's away with Spain U21s speaks volumes for his ability and potential."

Pacheco will team up with former Red Zak Whitbread who is at Carrow Road and the Canaries are currently second in the Championship as they eye promotion to the Barclays Premier League.
