I just watched that and have no idea how you reached that conclusion.

Most of the "highlights" were him kicking goals.

Some of the highlights were him in tight. Contested.

Some were running past . Outside.


The only apparent thing from that video was how much more confidence the mids had. Confidence and speed.

You'd call those contested plays in tight "highlights"? I'm not even sure why they were included.

You can deny the goals were "highlights", but without Warner's scoreboard impact, he's not the same Warner. So how he scores his goals are a pretty major part of the picture of him as a player.

As for the "some" running past on the outside, I would change that to "most." A large majority of them were him either out the back or the front of a stoppage, holding his width or swooping on a loose ball in time and space.

I wonder where he could find more of that time and space...

Yep the explosiveness out of the midfield is over rated - happens so rarely in AFL games

Not all wingmen are unsighted. We've kinda been conditioned to think that because we've struggled to have effective wingmen in recent times, with Stephens' inability to find his feet properly and McInerney's inconsistent form.

Gulden plays the wing role very well, because he has that outside nous. He gets himself in dangerous positions and takes the game on with his speed, knows when to hold his width and when to contest a ball. I think Warner has that same nous. It's evident in the amount of times his outside craft is clearly on display in that video.

But I agree he's cocky and a mojo player.

That's why I want him making whoever the poor bastard he's opposed to brick himself at the thought of being one out on a wing with Chad Warner. No ability to swarm and tackle and pressure Warner in numbers around a contest like is currently happening to him a lot. Just an opponent against one of the most explosive runners in the competition. Good luck son.

No disrespect, however I don't understand how some on here don't think we benefit from having a highly explosive midfielder who can bust tackles and break away from stoppages. Yes this part of our game isn't working great presently but lets reflect on how supremely good he was last year playing midfield. His form and confidence is down but growth/improvement isn't linear. I have no concerns about his role moving forward.
Re explosive midfielders, some premiers in recent years have had explosive/hard to tackle mids - these names might ring a bell - Patrick Dangerfield, Dustin Martin. Would Chris Scott

The best two wings in the swans are Gulden and Campbell.
Followed by Jmac and Blakey.

I'd rather gulden and Campbell held their width.

Stephens is a bit of a lost cause. At AFL level
He has the same issue as Gus. Imo.
Lacks the confidence or nous to impact the game.

To be fair I don't think "some" on here think it. I think I'm well in the minority on this one

You cite examples of premiership midfields with explosive mids. But there have been just as many without one. Somewhere along the way it was decided that you absolutely need these sorts of players in your midfield to win premierships, and I just don't think you do.

You'll see they've included examples where he's won it IN the contest, complete with hack kicks off one step and hospital handpasses under pressure, just like every other mid not afforded time and space. Just like 2023 Warner.

I'd suggest that video of 'his best plays' is another standard AFL compilation which consists of a player marking, lots of a player scoring and a few random bits which doesn't include either. I certainly don't think it encapsulates Chad's season as a whole.

I made the point last week that Stephens had the least game time of any of our players other than Ladhams & Sheldrick.
I suggested that this was because Gulden & McInerney had become our two established wingers and that Campbell the last two weeks has spent more time on the wing (particularly v Freo).

So if Chad were to move to the wing who would miss out?
What would be our midfield rotation?
Do we need a point of difference?

I'm with Donza & Swans22 I think Warner adds that point of difference. Our other mids tend to be one paced.
Mills, Parker, Rowbottom, Heeney, Roberts, Sheldrick and even Stephens (who is relatively quick) lack that burst.
And it's not as if we have too many good users, by foot, in that group to provide a point of difference.

I'd need a fair bit more convincing to support Chad to the wing.

When you have a player that can create scoring opportunities with unique skills like that you put them where they're going to hurt the opposition the most

Vision and precision isn't too bad either. Sydney just need to play their natural way and they'll be too strong for Carlton. The toughness shouldn't be too hard to replicate at home.

Yeah. Its a gale until 5pm
Gusts of 32 knots moderating to 24-28 knots.
8pm will be 18-24 knots and turning westerly and easing.
The low pushes pretty quickly offshore.

Biggest issue will be the airport who will revert to East West opps and will cancel domestic flights

I agree its hard to envision. But let's hope we can turn that form around and get the season back on track. Our mids need a huge game! We need to start well and nail some set shots. We are the worst set shot team in the comp which is absolutely killing our momentum.
