make up his mind that he didn't want to play for Adelaide? During which trek out to Elizabeth was it where the penny dropped? Sure, he didn't tell us until after the season (and boy were we surprised) but mentally he was back in Victoria a long way out.

Those first two years were when he should have been falling in love with playing for the club, growing in confidence alongside his peers, getting swept up in playing in front of an adoring crowd. Instead he watched the AFL team lose pathetically while he bided his time and clocked up the miles.

Gets a game halfway through Year 1. Kicks his first goal in AFL football. Part of a narrow victory over Brisbane at Footy Park... instantly dropped. Back to Elizabeth you go. Don't go forming any strong bonds with teammates, now.

Watches us put together 7 rounds of utter garbage in Year 2 before finally getting a look in (it takes a 96 point drubbing from a hopeless Melbourne team for it to happen (one change: Gunston in, Walker out. Otherwise unchanged)). Kicks 7 goals in 6 games, dropped again (we remain garbage).

Doesn't miss a game after Neil leaves but the damage has been done by then. His decision has been made. Kicks 5 goals in the final match vs Richmond. Tells us he's off a few weeks later. Wins our best young player award until a furious Trigg finds out he's leaving, swoops in, sends the plaque to be reengraved and gives it to Talia.

This first season and a half is when Daniel Curtin should be falling in love with playing for the Crows.

Sure, I get it. He's a rookie teenager and might struggle against some bigger bodies. Solution? Let's play him at full back in the reserves against the opposition's biggest forwards, alongside 10 or more top up part-timers. That'll learn him.

This is when a strong footy ops manager would clunk the coaches heads together. Sadly we don't have that.



Alternative solution? He's an elite runner for his size, excellent at ground level, agile in traffic. I dunno... how about use him a bit further up the field? Let him use his strengths, find a bit of the ball and start to find his feet. The weaknesses will take care of themselves in time.

I'm worried that Curtin will be looking at every player drafted near him playing AFL earlier, plus seeing the Weagles begin to re-emerge with cap space up the ying yang. And getting pumped by SANFL teams playing in a role he's not yet suited for. Is he falling in love with the AFC at present? Is he about to sign an extension because he loves the place so damn much?

There are a lot of things we can criticise at the moment. ROB could use a kick up the backside... give Strachan a go... can't be any worse. Who cares about that though really. O'Brien vs Strachan ain't going to make or break us. Both average and ruck schmuck, makes no difference to how we go.

Curtin though is one of only a handful of genuinely talented players we have on our list. So don't f*** up that one. Go for your life on the ROB v Strachan one. Go your dumbest. Heck, put ROB in the leadership group for all I care (Wait- what..?)

But do right by our genuine prospects.

Seems an easy straight swap for Brodie Smith who cant defend and hasnt provided any sort of run and carry for a couple years now.

Spot on. What we are doing with this kid is criminal.

If he has been training at half back during the preseason and played there in the first SANFL games, he would be playing AFL and instead of messing around with an injured and badly out of form Smith, Parnell and Hamill, he’d be playing AFL.

But because of his height we are thinking KPD and KPD only. We have found 3 cheap KPD, 2 of high quality. We blew a pick 6 on a KPD. How the heck have we not learnt? Are we that dumb or that arrogant that we think we don’t need to worry about pissing him off? This besides all the draft hype about him being a flight risk.

Playing FB as an undersized kid against grown men in a s**t side, whilst all the other top picks are playing, whilst the seniors have been lucky to win one game. Like what’s there not to like, what’s the risk?

Great thread. I've saw a lot of Curtin play last year in his under 18s year and his best football definitely came when he played in the midfield. I'm not really convinced that he is a great key backman but what he is is a player who knows how to find the footy when played up the ground, a very good user of the ball, good in the air and unlike most of our players he is the sort of player that when he's got the ball the forwards eyes will light up.

Even if Curtin played across half back or the wing at the moment that would be okay but when you a player that could be bontempelli like don't waste him at full back.

It was interesting hearing hardwick say it way more beneficial to get young players AFL experience rather than just play them in the state leagues.

Why nicks would compare Curtin to mcasey is beyond me. Curtin is a lot better player than mcasey at the same age and Curtin is more a ball player where as mcasey was very one dimensional.

It's still makes me laugh to this day. Neil Craig refused to play dangerfield in the midfield and wouldn't play Tex and then Sanderson comes in in his first year plays danger in the guts and plays Tex and magically we were minor premiers and made a preliminary final. Danger polls well in brownlow, Tex kicks a stack of goals and everyone thought sando was a genius. Truth be known craigy was a stubborn fool and it probably cost his job.

I think this is more PTSD based than factual. There would be no world where Curtin will be walking around thinking he should be playing AFL. He is only 3 games into the Sanfl season and the AFL team is 6.

Having said that though, he along with many others will become disenchanted with selection if results keep going poorly and we keep backing in the same group of players every week who aren't getting the job done.

Should he be selected, Yes.

We have no talls. through Nicks desire for short players. So he has probably seen his height and decided to chuck a lot of weight on him. You watch, he will be turned into a tank with his running ability ruined so he can play on tall AFL forwards.

Unfortunately we've got a pretty tight defencsive group and Brodie's leadership is a key ingredient. He'll get games when injury occurs and form warrants. He had an interrupted preseason and he's still got some things he needs to work on in the lower league.
