Yes, I noticed that as well. Not sure exactly what he means by being "short on fundamentals work". A strange comment to apply to a champion like Sidey.
Maybe he just doesn't want to give away too much about how we are instructing and conditioning our veterans.
Because right now, they are playing football approaching what they did in their prime.

The comment was about our 30+ year old players (not just Sidey)

The “short on fundamentals work” referred to those players coming back late from the offseason break (they get more leave) after the Grand Final and missing a section of what was covered in the pre-season.

Great game tonight. I owe Pendles and Sidey a big apology. After opening round, I thought they were gone.

Ned Long brilliant.

Naicos BOG. He gets harshly judged. One or two posters even said he was quiet! But his ball use creates so many opportunities that he is BOG for mine.

Cameron is huge. Just get's better every year. Could be AA this year if he keeps this up.

The three M's are important. Tonight is an example of exactly what they need to do. Take a mark, but if not bring the ball to ground. How many goals did we kick due to being front and center of the marking contest.

Anyway strong win. Could have won it by 7 or 8 goals we were that dominant but take 31 any day of the week.

lol Steele holding everyone up on the race and letting Darcy Cameron walk off on his own.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate our recent recruiting.

We didn’t win the flag without the 2022 recruits. Premiership full forward big Bill too! Got us through when we had no ruck!

Schultz was good last year despite the critics, but really paying dividends this year so far. Imagine his pressure out there last night.

Long was a huge MSD acquisition.

And last years gets…Houston (who will have been suspended 50% of his games at Collingwood by the time he returns). Pez has exceeded my expectations. And Tim Membrey. On st Kildas scrap heap, been such a get for us.

Ned Long great game. He will be huge for Nick’s game by releasing him into space more often. On that, I would like to see Ned give first hands more often. He did a fair few u-turns when I thought he could have handballed to a better option.
Hard to be critical of someone who was just BOG and will only get better.

Carlton losers claiming Sydney would have won with Papley and Gulden but surprisingly failing to mention our omissions
Who gives a flying what they think!
I’m tempering my enthusiasm as they were missing quite a few.
Am happy to have the W though, because if the roles were reversed we wouldn’t get any sympathy.

Frampton, Long and Sidey were all mint.

I would put Pendles and Billy Elliott alongside that trio. It was great to see Billy kick 3, and Pendles just continue to defy time with his ability to get the footy, and just put our ball movement onto a better path.
On a side note let's not forget, Pendles not only plays his own game, but he's coaches others whilst out there. Getting them to stand in positions that's going to best suit them and the team whether at centre bounce or a stoppage, or in a transition play. We're so lucky to be watching this legend play in our time.

LOL.....of course they would say that. They are desperate to finding solace from anywhere considering the shite their club has found itself in this season. So they thinking that we're really not that good, makes them feel better, but we know that train of thought is just deluded....

Fly made some interesting comments in his presser about the review of last year identifying that the older guys came into 2024 short of a run on fundamentals work and that they'd rectified that this year (speaking about Sidey)

Pondering on Fly’s pressers and public statements…like every coach he rolls out his share of generalisations and platitudes. But occasionally he gives us real insight into the coaching brain, and what goes on internally to make us better.

This is an example of that, and his other references to not letting external noise dictate how we manage our veterans.

It seems like only 10 years ago, that our players didn’t age well. Travis Cloke anyone?

But now we’re the complete opposite. I include Howe in this too. His form can fluctuate with age, but we will miss him badly when he finally retires.

Random observations.

Mccreery is a much better player if he gets his hands on some uncontested possessions.

We kicked about four goals from front and centre roving the packs from MMM marking contests.

Brilliant coaching strategy tonight to slowly carefully move the ball along the wings and just deny swans possession. It’s was a bit old school Malthouse style!

Frampton was awesome

Four quarter performance

Not too many passengers last night although I’m starting to build concerns about Howe.

Perryman is the new Mr Fixit, slotting seamlessly into the Houston role.

EDIT…

Sydney got some lucky goals. Especially the one from the rarely used “ tap out on the full” rule and a resulting difficult set shot. We pretty much dominated them all night and with a little more luck on the scoreboard could have won by seven or more goals. They really didn’t bat very deep and were overly reliant on Warner and Heeney.

I reckon Baggers/Eagles game will be one of the biggest watched games this round
Tossing up whether to trek down to the Oval again this afternoon, so I can laugh at Carlton in person (side note - I know why they're called the Baggers now - because they have a peculiar proclivity for doing strange things with paper bags).

longs form has been a revelation this year (giving off similar vibes to markovs premiership year form) .... his strength in the tackle is great asset

commented a few weeks back that he has a tendency to bang it on the foot ignoring better options on the outside - still saw evidence of it last night but also saw a willingness to use those outside runners (benefit of coaching and confidence?)

if he can maintain this form he offers fly flexibility to use degoey more creatively .... with occasioanal bursts on the ball

And you feel an upset is on the cards, and Carlton actually win....🤣🤣
Give them a bit of misplaced confidence in their own abilities, and then watch and laugh as they come crashing back to earth when they play the more skilled teams than West Coast and North.

No matter how some commentators deny it and no matter how they try to hide it, the Collingwood Hate sneaks into their work at every opportunity. Tonight the Hawthorn Hate Mongers put on a master class.
I can’t stand the fox commentary. Full of Collingwood haters

You can only play who's in front of you on the day, with the cattle you have available. I'll take any win I can get - big or small, it's 4 points in the bank either way.

Now if I was a Carlton fan watching last night's game, my big takeaway would have been last week proved Vossy and Fly are really best mates. Otherwise Fly would have unleashed Ned Long on us but he showed compassion and made him the sub.

Some random thoughts -

How do Hill and Schultz function in the same forward line? Where we obtain the best from both players.

Last year early on we preferred Charlie Dean over Frampton. This year it was Reef over Frampton. However, it looks pretty obvious that our defence works better when Frampton plays? Does Framps have a big off season?

Who is our ideal sub? It seems to be a bit random ATM?

Well Naicos, despite the tag, was the number 1 ranked player on the ground. I think Longy's ability to win the contested inside ball, helped release Naicos on the outside. We have found a real contested bull, who is going to win at least 50% to 60% of the contested ball he competes for because he's such a big bodied mid and strong. He can't be brought to ground whilst being tackled, which is a great attribute to have as an inside mid.

It's still early in Longy's career, but his trajectory is huge, and if he continues to get better as the season goes on, it does two things. It means we really don't need to pursue a Rowell, if we have any real intention of doing. It makes us realign our strategy and focus on our F/S and NGA selections.
On the negative side, it may, depending on his recovery from his latest setback, bring closer the end of Titch's career. I couldn't see where we would actually play Long and Titch in the same team anyway. Titch may well become the backup for Longy.
We still need to see how Longy tracks for the remainder of this season, so these decisions are well and truly on the backburner for now....

If DeGoey is back next week, l would have him as the sub against Brisbane. This gives him the opportunity to get 1.5 quarters in, to be a burst player whilst easing him back him with less chance of him breaking down, mid game.
We want to have a fully fit and healthy DeGoat in the second half of the season, so maybe he could be the sub a couple of times leading up to the mid-season bye.
You would also think Pendles and Sidey will occupy the sub position at points during the season Pendles we know already has...

Don't think we should look at it like this.
The 3 MMM's were brilliant tonight as a co-ordinated whole, in :
a) providing targets up forward
b) (just as importantly) going into the midfield corridor and defending and attempts by the Swans to go through there.
There mobility and excecution as a trio was outstanding.

This was obviously set out in our strategy for this particular game.

With a different opponent, Cox will be in the mix. I am confident that he will fully understand the game day plan, as the 3MMM's so clearly did tonight.
Nah. Injury is the only thing that will get Cox a game.
