The Tigers head on the road this week to travel across to WA to face the only other side to knock off Sydney this year in Fremantle. The Dockers have surged into 3rd place on the ladder and will certainly be a challenge for a Richmond side that is struggling to find consistency as the year from hell continues on.

Unfortunately we will likely lose Martin this week to a back complaint with Prestia a slight chance to return along with Samson Ryan. Tom Lynch is unlikely to make the trip over a they give him time to fully recover from a hamstring issue in the opposite leg that required surgery earlier this year. Even though we got beaten by 10 goals against the Blues I'm not thinking we'll see a heap of changes with Yze swinging the axe. If Prestia doesn't get up we may well see Dow return to the side after a solid outing in the VFL against Carlton. Cumberland is the other that may come into calculations for a Martin replacement inside F50.

Some may suggest that we give the likes of Green and Coulthard another chance after they both had very good games yesterday, but their month of footy before that is not what you'd be rewarding players for. I'd like to see them back it up again for another couple of games before they get considered for the senior side. The other 2 that have been in consistent form are Trezise and Smith down back and I know some constantly call for Short to be dropped, but it would be a big call to drop one of the vice captains in a period where we're so hampered by injuries.

What will be interesting in this game will be how our midfield shapes up against the Dockers midfield who are ranked number 1 in the comp for clearances, while we're dead last in that area, in part because most of our better mids have been sitting in the stands most of the season. Against Carlton we managed to break even in the clearance battle and lost contested possessions by only 6 so we were certainly up for the fight in the contest, it was just a case of when Carlton won their clearances they were able to do more damage from them than we were.

Prediction
Much like the Carlton game I can see the Dockers getting the win rather comfortably, especially on their home deck and given they touched us up by 9 goals the last time we met, it shouldn't be a shock of the margin was something similar this weekend if not more.

Reviewing the Carlton Game - why is it that we find it so difficult clearing the ball from the back line? Its the second clearing kick that acts like a Boomerang - we have no players who can consistently contest and take a overhead mark - it falls into the opposition hands and the ball richochets back to their forwards.

We are rather predictable with our kick-outs, one thing I was hoping Yze might have changed a bit.

Kick it 30m to the man on the right hand boundary, who will first stop and sometimes look to either pass back inside 30m, but more likely look another 30m along the boundary line. We sometimes make it to the 50m line, and sometimes this takes 3 possessions. In the mean time the other side has set up behind the ball. The player then kicks the ball from 40m out from their goal to the wing, where the opposition ruckman has had plenty of time to set himself. Rinse and repeat. We might get a boundary stoppage if we are lucky. Very late Hardwick style low percentage play.

This might sound daft, but what about someone like Ralphsmith leading out to the wing on the fat side and the kicker from goals runs 15m and bangs it as long as possible to Ralphsmith's advantage, hopefully out the back. That opens the whole ground up, and yes opens us up a bit for counter attack, but at least it would be more entertaining, and might even get us into space running the ball into the forward line.

As you say, we have no marking presence up the line. But it is generally a big pack that we kick too because we have been so slow moving the ball, that even Richo would struggle to mark the ball. Rioli is the only one who dares and breaks the lines, hence it would be nice to see Smith in there as well (about 8 weeks ago), because he is a bit of a dasher as well.

We were less predictable and more attacking earlier in the year, but that has dried up since. We have one player that rebounds at speed across half back, Rioli, (god help us if he leaves). Our speed out of our back line is a big problem. I've been hoping Smith might be given a good go in there since about Rd4, but not as yet. Maybe this week.

I was watching during that Carlton game and the blues did the same thing, kicked it right to a free player in the forward pocket (back pocket for them), except their next kick seemed to always find an open player on half back. We tend to just bomb it long to a wing, get out marked or we lose the loose ball.

Hate to say it but surely our club looks at how other teams are doing it?

I think there were a couple of kicks straight up the guts from full back which I did like. A little bit more unpredictable... unfortunately the oppo cut them off, but at least it was something else!

Yes late in the game when everything else was getting chopped off, or maybe it was the third Q. But even if you chip it short to the left side instead of the right every time, at least that would be harder to set up against.

As I said in the OP, there wasn't a heap in the VFL that have been in great form that warranted them getting selected this week. Trezise & Smith probably the most consistent we've had since the Cats game, but not quite good enough to replace anyone in our current back line IMO.

As I said in the OP, there wasn't a heap in the VFL that have been in great form that warranted them getting selected this week. Trezise & Smith probably the most consistent we've had since the Cats game, but not quite good enough to replace anyone in our current back line IMO.
