Autopsy Round 16, 2024: Hawks cook the Eagles

Always tough on the road so that was a very decent win .
Thought our defence/pressure around the ground was superb . We strangled and pressured the life out of them .
We have come a long way in that area.
The buy in is plain to see .

Forwardline was a bit clunky but started to come good .
Really happy with that .

Huge test next week , we have some attributes that can really worry the Cats even down there . Can't wait.

There were a few ugly moments in the last quarter when players were fatigued and turned the ball over or made poor decisions. However, I thought we played pretty well both defensively and offensively. Missed some very gettable shots but that happens.

Glad we went up a gear & won. Still wasted a golden opportunity to boost our percentage but we didn’t drop the bundle at half time and found a way to kick a few more goals at least.

Here kitty, kitty….

Harry Morrison coming on as a sub in the 3rd had more possessions than most of the eagles players
Harry might have found his spot as our permanent sub (as much as I hate the actual rule itself).

He's a hard running utility (ideally suited for sub) and he's a true professional who will come on the ground and do whatever is required of him.

He was very effective as a sub and is well suited to the role. I was glad to see his consistently strong VFL performance rewarded

Chol elevates again.

Weddle carves them open through the square.

Impey pops up exactly when he's needed, exactly where he's needed.

Meek and his centre square comrades run a masterclass for their opponents.

And Moore does a Gump and runs and runs and runs.

Other than that, a very lacklustre 10-goal win.

Day and Sicily would be the two worst players injured for us going frwd.
Lewis in for calsher which is an upgrade so no real biggie there but Day and Sicily hopefully right to go. Don't have direct replacement for them. And I'd hate to lose those cats and think what may have been come the end of the game without those two. !

Want to highlight Macdonald though. Since missing that Collingwood goal he's become the guy who always seems to kick the goals we need, when we need them.

You mentioned on his thread that he needed to start kicking those and I concurred. I was going to post today similar to what you just have. He's converting at a much better percentage since, it's partly set shots but it's those ones on the run or snaps that he's just nailing.

Now if Ginni and the Wiz can sort out their set shots we're a 3 goal a game better side right there.

Just hope Sic is okay - if he dislocated for a 2nd time, not good news.

Re-doing disclocations means more likely season-ending surgery, so just crossing fingers he's okay, even if it means he's rested for the Cats next week.

Was listening to some of the Weagles players on radio now and they sound absolutely devastated. Despite not taking full toll, they were trounced today. Midfield was absolutely, crushingly ... dominant. Bring this heat again next week, and we may just cause Cats some issues.

Wasn’t perfect, but still a great win. In what was our biggest win of the year, we kept them to their lowest score at Optus for the season, and we picked up 5 percentage points. They’ve been very competitive there, with their last three losses by 14 pts or less. So let’s celebrate 🥳

Watched it at the pub so hard to hear commentary etc. What did Sicily say at the end?
Would've come on in the last if WCE kicked the first 2 goals. Didn't have to risk it, so he stayed off. Shoulder feels okay, but he'll see what they say tomorrow.

Lastly ... he also said thanks heaps for all the support from the Big Footy punters. Means a lot!

Is it just me or do we seem to completely control the ball in games now? Every loose ball seems to end up in our players hands and every attack by the opposition we seem to intercept and turn over. Our ball movement is really a weapon. The missing piece of the puzzle is our forward line efficiency and converting that possession into goals. Fix that and anything is possible.

I was really happy with that.

Beating an uber-flood is not easy. And Dear's style of play has no effect on Barass and the other unit - so we were basically a key player short in the forward line to deal with it.

We played skill, patient, smart footy most of the day. Interstate wins are huge for a young team even against the spooners. 10 goals is great. I'm feeling awesome about that game.

I get that Sicily might miss, but Day came back on. Nothing to see here!

Ginni trying to be too smart with his play. Tone it down 20% and that's where you want it at
Busted a gut all day. Had the foot injury, got smashed but watched him closely and was chasing hard and doing the pressure acts till the very end. He would be absolutely knackered after today. 2 very handy goals too.
