Review Round 12, 2024 vs Carlton

Mate took me into the 5AA locker room for last night's game. If you had looked at the players in the rooms post-game without knowing the result, you would have thought that they had won the game convincingly. Absolute joke of a club.

They still get their pay packet. They don't care. We Are Not Port Adelaide.
I think every post from now onwards should be finished with this statement. It should be shouted from the rafters because it sums up everything.

WE ARE NOT PORT ADELAIDE

I thought the new HTB rule worked for us more often than not, thought it was reasonably interpreted. But this one had me scratching my head.

How many games has it been since the Finlayson to ruck experiment last worked?

You might forgive them for persisting if he actually contested the ruck but opponents now know he is just a spectator in there until the tap has been taken. Ollie gives more of an effort (and that's not saying I want Ollie in the role either).

The good modern sides (even the crows these days) pressure the ball carrier around the middle of the ground to force a turnover and slingshot quick movement from a dangerous position for scoring opportunities.

We continually fall back and concede short passes letting opposition march up the field and try to defend from deep in the backline, where even if we win the ball we have to carry it 180m up the field and hope the forwards can run all the way back to provide a target.

Poor Georgie at one stage had to fall over the boundary line because he had no one to go to and couldn't run any further. Way to treat a player coming back from an ACL (and he should have taken the shot for his 5th in the last quarter, but you don't need me to tell you that).
The allowing of oppo defences to chip it out of our forward line with uncontested marks does my absolute head in. One of Carlton's goals in the second quarter we literally just watched them chip it around till they got inside 50 and kicked the easiest of goals. WTF.

Nothing can really happen during the season unless the absolute bottom falls out. And that is still a possibility, albeit, unlikely.

The bigger question is whether or not the Club will be content with another finals series without putting up as much of a whimper - either a first week exit or straight sets exit in week 2 if they somehow find a way to finish top 4.
The board should have acted years ago but they are weak & just want an easy ride

Clubs have definitely worked out how to nullify him in ruck. Not worth persisting with.

The Collingwood player gave the ball to a team mate which wasted time. This one didn't.

Edit. Actually I'm confused also, he should have given it to the ump and it wasted time.

Not here to rub anything in but did see this comment and remember someone figuring out a stat about this re port. Before last night in games with crowds under 40k since 2021 port are 48 and 19. A really great record. In games with crowds over 40k port are 5 and 11 in the same time (incl. Last night). It's a weird stat to me. Port seem like they're always on the edge of being a ****ing good team. Hope it clicks for yall. Good luck the rest of the season.
Great stat.

Our night game record at AO says it all. To be 33% vs top 8, and only 50% total. At our home ground. During a period where we have a 60% WL record is crazy.

If you asked any nuffie out there, what they thought our record would be at Adelaide Oval in night games, given we have a 60% record home and away and I'm convinced most people would guess 60-70%.

Yes, he just dropped it on the ground which would have wasted more time than if he gave it to JHF (which it looked like he was about to do). But definitely did not hand the ball straight back to the umpire.

The crowd - not just around me but all over the ground - groan and then rage as we give up easy pass after easy pass.

The bit where we took Horne-Francis out of the midfield because we needed goals only to watch Carlton kick about 5 goals out of the centre
Spot on and at the same time surprise, surprise Solda was buggered so the plan was to play a rubbish ruchman Jeremy on the ball.

Most depressed I've been after a Port game... we are heading nowhere.... AGAIN. No game plan, no moves, no forward leads, WEAK backline....

Einstein: Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.

I sit in the crowd knowing what is going to happen we have been treading water for years. The amount of posters on here who predicted before the game exactly how it would pan out is frightening.

Every goal we kicked there was a reply within a minute, sometimes less.

Mental weakness, but also a shitful game plan where our defenders are left exposed and goals are scored easily over the back.
Not to forget that Carlton would have been well ahead during the 3rd if they didn't bizarrely manage to **** up multiple chances basically at the goal line, maybe 4? that should have all been goals to then kick a left foot snap from the boundary. They were all over us most of the game and we were running the ol Crows playbook of trying to score on a counter attack, the problem with that is once the opposition gets a lead you are ****ed coz you then have to take risk which opens the scoring up for them more.

22 minutes 30 seconds in.
