Not sure what your watching (either live or on tv) if you haven’t observed that Gunston can’t run at the required speed to be effective at AFL level.

He’s smart, especially when we have the ball, at finding space to lead in to, or to lead his defender away from the drop zone.

And he can zone up defensively, but he’s a genuine liability if the ball is being rebounded out through his part of the ground.

Of course I've seen that - what I haven't seen is him being totally cooked such that he can't offer anything, or evidence that he loses every one on one which is what the original thing was that I disagreed with.

Clearly, other players could offer more defensively. I'm happy to carry Gunston a bit longer knowing he is deficient on those things, in the hope that we can get a few good performances out of him in big games this year. He was one of the best finals performers of the hawks era, and we could really use a key forward that can step up to the mark. I saw him be the only forward to turn up against the dogs in round 3, when the dogs clogged up the defensive 50 and we were impotent.

We've seen to my eye our best spell of forward pressure in years over the last 6 weeks carrying him in the team. I don't think it is hurting it as much as some are making out.

In the end we are arguing over marginal things here - I think he's worth trying for a bit longer over playing Fort/Fullarton. Its not like we have a first round pick KPP player sitting in the reserves.

Brisbane trained at its Brighton Homes Arena base at Springfield on Tuesday, with Cameron and veterans Dayne Zorko, Jack Gunston and Ryan Lester kept to light duties.

The above from the AFL app news - hope it's just cautionary training.

Cameron is the one that bothers me. The others have back up, but there's only one Charlie.

I understand where you're coming from in your thinking Tom and I shouldn't have said he loses every one on one ,but I don't recall seeing him win one. He's fine if he gets a yard or two on his opponent or out the back but in a contested situation he can't jump and it generally gets swept away or if he gets hands in it hopefully spills towards us.

I agree with Britzoon his pace is a long way below AFL standard and that's a significant liability when he needs to defend. Where I differ from you is that I'm not optimistic of him stepping up in big games in his present form and the opposition there will be capitalising on his deficiency.

I didn't want to recruit him but have nothing against him and was happy to give him a go. I'm sure he'll play some good games ,or at least passable when we continue to play him. I wouldn't mind finding out if others offer more prior to finals.

We need to bank all the wins we can while our list is in good shape.
Lions also have good depth, but it is always better to have all your best players available.

PLAYERINJURYESTIMATED RETURN
Ben Ainsworth Corked thigh Test
Connor Budarick Knee TBC
Nick Holman Foot Test
Touk Miller Knee TBC
Lachie Weller Knee TBC
Updated: May 16, 2023

Early prognosis

Holman and Ainsworth are strong chances to be available to face Brisbane but will have to get through Wednesday night's main session. The swelling on Weller's knee has only just begun to subside, meaning he'll be at least another week away, possibly more. – Michael Whiting

Fagan and Hawks champions -

Hodge - outstanding success

Birchall - worked, but not as well

Gunston - went to the well one time too many.
Do we go Luke Bruest next year ;)

I reckon hes the final one left from the current Hawks that played in the flag ere with Fagan or is this Hawks chapter finally closed?

Fagan rumoured to be attempting to coax Jordan Lewis out of retirement. It has been speculated that he had promised that Jordan will be selected in the seniors each week to perform an ‘on field’ coaching role. Any ‘incidental’ contact with the football or involvement in the play is secondary to his role as a mentor. An unnamed member of the Brisbane midfield group has been quoted in the media as saying that, “Jordan couldn’t run out of sight on a dark night and he can’t bend down to tie his boot laces, but his knowledge of set plays and field positioning is first rate. We all think we can learn a lot from Lewis, especially in the rooms after the game and at training. Not so much during matches, because we are all busy trying to get the ball or negating Lewis’s opponent who invariably runs off him, picking up possessions at will. We don’t mind effectively playing a man down though, because Fagan just lights up when Lewis walks into the rooms. It’s lovely to see.”

The gambler in me says I want to back Jack to kick 5 this week and take a speccy.

We're going over the top.

He's not that bad. If they stop pumping him up he can do a job in the right games.

But we have experience in recycled ex champs don't we 3KZ . I think we're mentally scarred.

Remember Len Thompson ? Rantall ? Walls was done and it cost us a final. Peter McCormack. Jeff Hogg ? All done when we shipped off younger players to give them a game.

John Cassin? Gavin Exell? Doug Hawkins? Larry Donohue? At least Warwick Irwin started with us before he nicked off to Collingwood, only to return in 1983. Someone was taking the piss when they gave Irwin number 13 to wear when he came back. Obviously Peter Francis wasn’t going to give up the number 7 guernsey, so it was probably 13 or something in the low 50’s.

These sort of intelligent discussions should be on the Over 50's (IQ?) Thread:)

Queenslaaaaaandeeeeeer - who would have thought Queensland would have 2 AFL sides. This weekend is a celebration of Aussies Rules having a foothold and prospering in a tradition Rugby League heartland. The Lions are my team but I like the Suns,i just wish they were better, starting next week after they play us.

This will be like the Dockers game, close early then we will claw our ahead and win by 6 or 7. We were slightly off our game against the Dons, just a fraction off in our timing but this week we with the players having more time a home and into a steady routine we will be ready to fire.

Fagan has shown he will tinker with the side, maybe one change and we see a different face as he keeps the squad ready giving the fringe players some time at the top level.

Going to be a fascinating game this week between the Hawks & Eagles.

Who takes the lead in the Harley Reid cup?

An unstoppable losing force meets an unmovable losing object.

I'm tempted to watch that game - it will remind me how far we've come and counter any disappointment I might feel about our teams performance.

So much improved.

I grabbed the WCE preview week because watching their games has been like watching one of those reality shows about car crashes.

Hey guys, coming up from the gc for the game. Is there somewhere good where a lot of fans go to have a few drinks and food pre game? I only really know of the Pineapple.

The Morrison and The Norman pubs are within a short walk from the Gabba and have great meals, always lots of Lions fans around pre game. Lots of other eateries around the precinct as well.

Get there early as the crowds mean the meals can come out slow, we always book a table 90 minutes before bouncedown.

At least at country footy, you get to park at the fence, and sit on your bonnet/bullbar.
