Not that we have many options at present, but this still looks like a 'fill the holes' team to me. We are 2 key position players down, 2 small/medium forwards who are makeshift (non-specialist) and a ruck division where hope is more a factor than expectation.
It will take a great team effort to overcome these deficiencies to beat Melbourne who are again very settled and mostly injury-free. We will be relying on significant improvement from players who have under-achieved in both the pre-season and in the GF.

Yeah it’s frustrating, he should be in this side. With no VFL yet if he doesn’t play he’s weeks away unfortunately

Is it possible to compare JUH and Jackson from Melbourne?

Jackson played a small number of games in his first year then pretty much every game in his second year. Just seems odd that JUH would be missing out on some valuable experience they could play him as third tall and a minor role to develop him, but at least he gets game time experience.

He'll play next week. This week's too important. Next week we play... someone less important anyway, pfft.

Jokes aside, could it be that our GF team all want a chance at redemption? Who's missing from it, apart from Wood?

I would have liked to have seen him play the first 5-10 games or so this year. He really musn't be up to it at this stage in his development.

They’re not perfect either, are the likes of Neal-Bullen, Jordan, Bowey, Spargo better than our bottom end of VDM, JJ, Hannan, Rourke etc? I wouldn’t have thought so.

Top end talent we have them beat, our top end spreads deeper than there’s, our general defenders and ball movement from backline much better. I’d rather one Naughty than both of Brown/McDonald. Timmy/Jackson should be about equal this year. The only parts of the ground they beat us convincingly is first ruck/2nd kpd and those are positions that can be nullified (ie a bits player like Hannan/Cordy/Shache taking Lever out of the game and Martin mostly nullifying Gawn at the CBs and the backline not letting him take easy marks forward etc)

I don't see the aerial support in the backline. Would feel more comfortable with Crozier in the side.

Massive game for Ed Richards imo

Richards and Williams are both 6'2" Dale is 6'1" Crozier himself is 6'1". The bigger issue is the roation as we don't appear to have one unless they swing JJ or Vanders through there I can see a potential late change coming

Pretty strange that we develop Schache all preseason in defence only to flick him forward at first instance. I'll take into consideration though that Bev's just as likely to play Schache in defence with 3 talls and leave Naughton one out up forward.

I'm hopeful Bont plays forward more this game. Yes he is a better mid but we need to occupy both May and Lever to be any chance. Dunkley to step up and play mainly inside mid.

Surely you've learnt by now that our team list is a load of shite.

Richards and Dale aren't interceptors. Williams takes the occasional contested grab.

I can see Roarke floating behind the ball which provides some surety.

Either way, Bevo has something planned.. whether it works out is the fun.

English also goes back behind the ball a lot when he's playing ruck, and he's a great mark.

Really wish JUH was playing. He would assist Naughton just by being there providing another target.

Even more so with no Rivers, Petty or Tomlinson. I think Bont will spend a lot of time forward tonight to provide the extra target and make sure Lever can’t double up on Naughton. Hopefully one or Bont or English is always forward.

JUH missed most of his draft year though. If anything, I think we can expect his third year to be more comparable to Jackson's second year (although ideally he comes on a bit sooner)

Yep, learnt that the hard way.

Hoping Daniel plays forward of the ball more. Need pinpoint delivery into forward 50 with the extra dee's numbers in defence.
100%
If we are to threaten this year our entry into f50 needs to improve a LOT. Getting Daniel into dangerous spots fwd of centre will help solve this issue, and also reduce the chance of him getting caught deep 1on1.
If you could draft our ultimate play it would be Dale out of defence kicking to Caleb kicking it to Bont inside 50.

He got throttled by COVID late in preseason. Don’t be too disheartened. He’s still close. My line of work is a very physical one and I am a fit guy but it took me weeks and weeks to be back to even close to capable again upon recovery. All signs point to the same thing with Marra.

Strenuous activity when not fully recovered from COVID is a risk factor for long COVID iirc. Look after yourself mate!

Hoping JUH breaks in soon.

We can dislike the Dees and how some fans or even some players have handled themselves following the flag (I'm fine with all of it basically, all the better to foster a rivalry which assists in keeping the clubs "relevant" - whatever that means in 2022), but I don't think the dogs were the best team for the majority of the year and I can't see how there are any question marks over the dees flag.

They beat up on most teams, beat their main competitors (often comfortably), and aside from a few off days against poorer teams were generally the best team throughout the year. They had the most dominant finals series in recent memory, and were deserved premiers. The dogs were likely impacted negatively by the finals series travel, more games etc. but then that's a result of the poor performances towards the end of H&A so of their own doing.

Now I don't think that means they'll dominate this year - they obviously had a great injury run, like most premiers do, and that is likely to regress to the mean. They'll also be hunted and teams will have worked on them over the offseason, so it'll be interesting to see how they go. Like most years, there are probably half a dozen teams who can win it and the team that banks wins early, has injury luck throughout, and then peaks at the right time will be the premiers.

Re. tonight's game, I'd prefer to play them later in the season when the cobwebs are shaken off but it should still be a decent game to watch (hopefully). Every week I'll look at the ruck and KPD division and squirm, but let's hope there is enough quality across the rest of the team to compensate.

Great post.

Hi all, I have been a passive viewer of this forum since at least the 2016 GF but I can't just sit back and watch some of these comments anymore..

I am shocked at the amount of calls that JUH should be named in the team. Did you watch the practice match vs Essendon? Did you see him in the 2021 season?

His performance vs Essendon was so bad.. No effort, didn't make a contest, just casually chased the pack around the 50.. It was actually embarrassing. He really needs to improve his attitude and willingness to contest if he's going to make it IMO. Yes we're definitely a forward short but not sure he is the answer. Can't wait for Bruce to return.

Hi all, having trouble forwarding tickets from digital pass to another person for this game. Forward button greyed out. Am I missing something? iPhone nor galaxy working.

Welcome to the board mate. Good to hear from you.

I don't agree with you, but hey that's why we're here. We all have different views.

If JUH had had a solid pre-season without Covid I'd be very concerned. However as others have pointed out he got Covid late in the pre-season. It's hard to make an effort when you're feeling knocked up. I'm prepared to give him time - we should see a very different player later in the season.
