Autopsy Round 1, 2025 vs GWS @ MCG

I think we did well enough to moderate the doom and gloomers.
Giants are a very good side.

We got some favorable umpiring decisions, lucky bounces and had plenty of chances to win the game(looking at you Max). And someone let Toby off the leash in the last quarter. And we have a yuk coach and a dysfunctional forward line and we are one crumber short in the backline.
Giants probably deserved the win.

I really didn't think Sparrow played that well - he missed an easy goal in the 1st and made a lot of poor decisions. I really worry about his processing of the game, on fast breaks he's a liability as he rarely makes the right choice or executes.

Laid some decent tackles and took some strong marks, but jeez he really hasn't improved at all since his 2nd or 3rd season
yeah he's a frustrating footballer. he can do good things but the next minute he'll let you down again.

You gotta give him credit for his long goal too though. And his pressure was the 2nd highest on the ground. His decision making looks like Pendlebury compared to Lever. Sparrow had a very good game imo. I think people that don't rate sparrow also said the same things about ANB i.e. disposals weren't great etc. To me these players are locks in the team due to their competitiveness alone. He's also one of the best long kicks of the ball in the team.

The criticism was also that he doesn't get enough of the footy. Well he's had 21 with only 9 cba's so that's improvement.
I've never really wanted him to be a high possession winner as generally (outside of a long straight kick) his disposal is kind of iffy and he makes poor decisions under pressure.

I just want Sparrow to tackle, take some strong marks and compete like a madman when the ball is in his area. He's a decent runner, so maybe run with roles could be his jam. He should be on the periphery of the side and that's okay.

Honestly the pre game music that the boys came out too was crap. Did not pump me up one bit.
Incredibly the Irish dancers were the best bit of crowd engagement the club has done in forever.

It took a while to warm up to them, but when we went on an early run in the 3rd the crowd was very engaged with it. Then when GWS fought it out but we got one back and we got a goal a bit later on there was a big cheer for the return

I would rather hells bells a thousand times over than that stupid demonic laughing thing they did last year

yeah I mean, in saying this I did notice his disposal efficiency was in the 50's so maybe I'm not seeing what you're seeing. For me, I actually rate him quite highly. As I did ANB. I feel like Sparrow does all of those things you mentioned. For whatever reason Goodie typically doesn't use taggers for some reason. Even when we had one of the games best taggers in Harmes several years ago, he rarely utilised it.

But back on sparrow, I'll take competitors everyday. And especially after some of our smashing to Freos last season, I just want guys that crack in like AJ, Sharp and Sparrow. It was also good to see Jefferson have a crack as well and Henderson. And it's also why I simply never want to see Billings in the side again.

Yeah obviously wouldn't work in a game we're getting smashed but was fun watching the crowd get more and more into it as the game went on even anticipating it after the goals. Whole crowd would have gone off if AJ kicked that goal. Oh well.

Meh I see very little evidence from that game that we have improved much since 2024. Our last performance against GWS was eerily similar in terms of both the scoreline and the way we played.

My only positives were a few isolated performances (Lindsay having a killer debut, Petty showing why he's a defender, and Trac playing like his injury never even happened). Other than that, I don't really know what to make of that game.

Key was just playing the same song every time. So good.

Is there anything going on with JVR that the club isn't telling us?

I know it wasn't a night for talls but he really struggled to impact the game at all. He was mistiming his leads, wasn't crashing packs and when he did, he was often going for the ball with only one arm.

I'm hoping it's just cobwebs.

Thought Jeffo competed much better than expected. Flew at some balls with real conviction and even brought tackle pressure at ground level.

Wasn't rag-dolled which I thought he might be when standing shoulder to shoulder with Idun/Taylor/Buckley/Himmelberg. With his hunch he doesn't look like much running around but when he jumps and extends his arms he's got quite impressive reach.

the tall forwards didn't win many contests outright, but I thought they at least broke even a fair bit. Johnson and JVR scrapped hard and brought the ball to ground for the crumbers and we actually scored quite a few goals that way. i also reckon Jeffo will start holding a couple more grabs with a couple of games under his belt to settle the nerves.

We look good when we win centre clearances and can get the ball inside 50 before Goody’s gameplan can flood the forward line, problem is we’re a terrible clearance side.

Just knew we’d lose the last clearance, ball never made it past our half of the ground in that last minute.

Yeah i was happy with his first outing. It was a task ask with the conditions and other players he was competing against (His own teammates included, although i suppose he's used to it down at Casey). He looked a lot more ready, which is what you hope for a kid that's been on the list as long as him. Not perfect of course, but would like to see him backed in for a week under the roof against an opposition you'd consider to be his contemporaries at the moment

Oh deary me..

Dammit haha I msgd rude by pm before this came out cause I noticed Oliver being a lazy campaigner on the last 2 minutes AFL video and was gonna lab it up. The Korn beat me to it

I couldn't agree any less with this. I reckon JVR played his worst ever game for us, Jefferson hardly was seen for the middle quarters and Fritsch had a couple of snaps and did nothing else.

Johnson did some dirty work up the ground and alot of running, very much a VFL battler game.

None of them are going to have an impact when they have such small roles in the side
