Fair enough. I've only seen two examples of significant influence by an umpire or umpires in a GF. The first was our 1982 loss to Carlton where (I think it was Glen James) had a less than stellar performance. We didn't help our cause however by putting Malthouse through that ridiculous fitness test pregame and Tempany breaking his arm through an indiscriminate Carlton kick, which wasn't penalised. The other was the 2016 Doggies/Swans GF where the umpires managed to restrict the Swans to 4 frees for the entire game while awarding some outrageous frees to the Dogs and not penalising them for other acts. Of course there were other contributing factors, such as Rohan's fumbling and Franklin's injury, but in a tight contest the umpires tipped the balance that day.
That said, I do agree with the proposition that it's almost always up to the team to win a game and not hide behind possible externalities.

Great post Schlurp and yes it was James. I still reckon he got a CFC special brown paper bag for that effort!

Because part of the fun of sport is the tribal, 'us against them' nature of it.

The world is complex and nuanced and issues should be examined with reserved and serious consideration, sport doesn't have to be...good guys, bad guys...simples. It's part of the release and enjoyment of the game.
Would have thought you could put that aside leave it for the opposition and even game day. You could actually join in and have a serious debate when others are trying to do so.
The tribal aspect of footy is just one small part of it all and if thats the only aspect you look at then you really do get blinkered imo.

Thought they measured up quite well for a big chunk of the game but the better side won out in the end.
There's no doubt they have improved immensely this yr.

Not sure why people just cant be balanced in their posting when it comes to the opposition.
I think most people reckon Collingwood were alright, it’s just way more fun to bag them

I'm just going to requote the post you responded to because you clearly didn't read it.

Watched the replay.
The look of pain on Stephenson's face after the siren.
As a young player, he will absorb the pain.
The veteran Pendlebury is tremendous.
He has achieved the ultimate success.
