I think I have seen enough of Bauer. He lacks effort on the ground and doesn't have presence or physicality to play tall and he lacks the speed to play mid or small so he is in this no man's land.
He's a classic Big Footy champion, whom the hype surrounding him grows bigger and bigger for each game he is sidelined or out of the team, yet never delivers when it's time.

Young Fawcett showed more last week than Bauer has ever showed, outside of a couple of big marks, yet we dropped the promising debutant.

Sonsie dominates VFL as a legit midfielder yet never gets a chance to play there in the seniors.

Give him a ****in chance at least.
Agreed, I also think he plays like a bloke sh1tscared to make a mistake and get dropped. Suggest tell him he’s locked in for 5 games of consistent midfield minutes no matter what to instil confidence. Would also give him a job this week to shadow Neale. He’ll take him to the ball and educate him on Workrate required of an élite midfielder. Nothing to lose, he either sinks or swims

that doesnt cut it in my book, when taranto needs to make THAT kick, he fluffs it. cant blame the players around him when he need to use the ball better.

Stick to my guns, he is a stat accumulator that would make a better forward player than a midfielder.
Agree with that and in fact he rarely handballs anyway (but maybe should do it more) His default is to throw quickly on boot. Usually a hack kick. Below average composure. His speed is a big issue but as others have said, compounded by other mids being used also being slow. But they are all about the same level overall which makes it hard to know which ones to drop

Rather listen to a 3x premiership coach any day of the week.
Then support Gold Coast. Wtf you doing here? Dimma quit. He gave up. If you'd rather hear him speak, go talk about it on the Gold Coast board.

I think I'd look to make quite a few changes to the team for next week.

Ralphsmith and Banks should hopefully be available to replace Trezise and Dow on the wings, which should give us a bit more speed and skill on the outside.

The midfield mix really isn't working. McIntosh isn't very effective as a tagger, so I'd like to see him replaced in the midfield mix with McAuliffe. Let McAuliffe play a simple ball-winning role and have Taranto do the defensive role if we need to. Would be good to see Lalor get a bit more of a run in there too, rather than starving him up forward.

Armstrong isn't ready yet. I think it would be good for him to build some confidence at VFL level. I also don't think Bauer is big enough to be an AFL key forward. I'd play him down back in the VFL, which is his best chance of making it imo. Blight could then get a full game to see how he goes as a forward/ruck, with his KPD spot down back going to Gray. I'm not sure Gray is quite ready yet either, but worth giving him a go for at least a week while we wait for Balta, as he shows a lot of promise.

The third tall forward is a bit tricky because the most ready-to-go prospect in Fawcett is out with concussion, and I'm not sure the others are ready yet. Faull might be the best bet as he's got the athleticism to play further up the ground, which compliments the less mobile Lynch and Blight.

The last change I'd make would be to hand a debut to Alger in place of Sonsie. Sonsie's role up forward seems a bit pointless, as he's not a marking target and lacks the speed to be an effective pressure forward. I'd rather see Alger get a run playing at the feet of Lynch.

In: Ralphsmith Banks McAuliffe Faull Gray Alger
Out: Trezise Dow McIntosh Bauer Armstrong Smith

B: Broad Miller Gray
HB: Short Vlastuin Brown
C: Banks Taranto Ralphsmith
HF: Green Mansell Campbell
F: Blight Lynch Lalor
R: Nankervis Hopper Ross
IC: Trainor McAuliffe Faull Alger
SUB: Sonsie

It's also on Nank.

Marshall gave up the hitout to block Nank competing to lock the ball up. Nank essentially taps it to his feet. Saints mids rished forwatd into the hole that Marshall created by boxing Nank out of the contest and got the easy clearance with a clearing handball. Happened time and time again.

Nank really needs to just start smashing the ball clear at times when we are getting thumped in the middle.
But our mids will be second to the ball coz they are slower than their opponents

The big takeout for me was the midfield. We’re cooked in there currently. I’m ok if we get done. But, if we’re gonna get done, FFS, play Sonsie, Campbell and Mansell through there. At seasons end, one of Taranto or Hopper has to be traded. The mix is stuffed. So i’m not saying they’re bad footballers etc, what i am saying is we have 0 pace and outside run. Something has to change.
There’s not much a backline can do when the saints ran it though the guts with ease.
Sonsie is not the answer talent yes but no ticker, intensity, want etc no matter what position you play in football you haven't got those bread and butter traits you aren't making it.

Mcauliffe is a must and can’t wait for smillie to add , both of these players actually carry the ball , our midfield is very stop start , Dow is about the only one that takes them on , rest just unload and that’s why we are as ordinary as yesterdays bread .
Leb deserves NOT to be sub , he has attributes we need , takes them on game on and is a nice kick
Armstrong should have a spell at VFL , is laboring and needs to work on his craft getting some separation
Green spot is shaky apart from a nice assist provides very little , Alger is coming hard for his spot

Reality is we re 15g off 2 sides that I don’t expect to finish any higher than 10th . The part that disappoints me is that I reasonably expected our midfield would be able to compete with these bottom 6 sides ,,,,,I was WRONG

There were heaps of positive signs in the first half that make me truly believe this side is going to be very good in a few years, but they just can't maintain it yet.
Seth is really developing into a top line player , could have a 30-40g season which is outstanding work . If Alger could prove a likely type we could have that role covered

My quick take:

1) We won a quarter (Q2) when the game was up for grabs. We played some good footy in that period. That's mission accomplished for this game.

2) Saints @ Marvel is just about our worst possible match up. Outside speed and skill on a fast deck. The result was predictable.

3) Some of the younger players did ok: Campbell, Blight, Trainor, Trezise, Brown and Smith (as sub) all had their moments. That's all we can expect at this stage.

4) Being a young key forward in this team at this time would be a nightmare: nobody should be making a judgement on Armstrong or Bauer on the last two games. Neither of them will touch the footy next week either against the Lions defence. Our coaches just need to give them a simple objective each week, something they can tick off and feel like they are playing their part. I expect them to give Armstrong a week in the 2s - his confidence looks shot.

5) It takes 50 games for a player to believe he belongs. We've got lots of players short of that mark. It shows. That's why we go slow and players look terrified of making a mistake. When they make a mistake, young players think they are going to be dropped and then delisted. Don't attribute our "go slow" approach to coaching - there is no way that's what they've been training. It's just what happens to any playing group (particularly an inexperienced group) when you start getting smashed.

Forgot to mention L train, he looks a beauty , looks very comfortable at the level and has huge upside as he adds strength

To many here letting our senior group and second tier getting away without the blow torch on them. I can count on 3 fingers since rd 1 who's performing busting a gut Nank and Macca 2 of them. That second half there was lazy efforts , lack of pressure and intensity and the brain fades. Bread and butter of footy not negotiable where's it gone. We're talking season campaigners here forget about the kids. Have look at Short back to his 2024 form. I rather get belted with all kids if they put up that rubbish.

One move we could pull if we want our midfield to be a bit more damaging on the outside would be to put Shorty in there, but it's really only a short-term fix.
To many got carried away with his rd 1 performance. Turning the ball over , brain fades and lack of appetite for the contest. He should have been traded in 2024 his a liability.

It’s only because he jumps but otherwise he’s pretty damn average

I called it last year that Lefau was the better prospect
He runs repeat leads that creates space and confusion does the work to give his team mates an opportunity as well not just try and stuff his own pockets with the odd highlight

mcchins junior

Here at the point of Mansell pushing he wasn't aware of what the impact might be but noo according too these nuff nuffs he knew because he put his hand up after the fact lol

Bauer has kicked a goal a game. Some good footy, some average. Pretty much descibes the whole team.

Yze has kept the 2 KPF set up..the minute that we go with 3 KPF Bauer won't play. Fawcett did mark well & a good long goal.

Armstong only 45% TOG vs Saints, maybe he's rested.

I watched Sonz show guts in a contest or 2 at half forward. He won't be dropped.

Green for Alger.

IMO it's having the two of them in the centre together often with another similar player. that creates the problem. If we used more balanced combinations like Taranto Dow and McAuliff or Hopper Ross and Sonsie then I think they would be more effective. Lots of other teams have one player in the midfield like Taranto or Hopper but we are trying to play three. I suspect its Yze trying to play the Melbourne model and you see how that goes when you don't have Petracca Viney and Oliver at their best.
This. Entirely. But it’s not just about the ruck and the three onballers. We lack pace and/or defensive effort coming off the wings - the type of stuff McIntosh used to do during the good times. Weirdly, the frantic chaos of HRS may indeed be an important missing piece.
There is nothing wrong with Taranto and Hopper being in the same side, but perhaps not as often as a starting midfield. They’re actually both decent forward of the ball for stoppages.
