AFL Toast RND 6: Win Against The Crows

Watched replay, actually a lot of the dreaded 'learnings' to take from this game. Our pressure early was really good, really immense but it is deeply concerning that very little translated to goal scoring opportunities and then we we did get chances, bad accuracy really killed us.

Based on work rate and pressure.. a 'top' team would have been 4-5 goals up at quarter time, such was the dominance.

Crows climbed back into it on the back of, predictably, the 2-3 gift goals we give the oppo every week. First was the draper dumb 50. This wasn't even contentious.. he is just stupid and lazy and got rightly pinged. Then the Laverde kick across goal off one leg special.. the only thing missing was a goal from an Andy McGrath dump kick across the shoulder. Mistakes happen.. and you can't expect to keep teams scoreless but we make things hard for ourselves in predictable ways every week. Guys like Laverde should be given a team instruction never to kick across goal.

Second half was an old fashioned arm wrestle that went with the momentum. When crows got on their 7 goal streak, it was very clean and efficient and highlighted exactly how to beat our 'defensive structure'. In the end it was heart and effort by guys like Caldwell and Duzza that dragged us back into it. Second week in a row that Martin has snuck forward and put a goal through.. Hopefully more evidence that we need him higher up on the ground.

Great to get the win.. but that last 7 minutes was a train crash and in the end we were very lucky to survive. We gave up 3 scoring shots even after going into 'full prevent' mode. That is concerning and better teams would have risen to the challenge. We also got very lucky that our dumb ruckmen didn't get pinged - that will be called more often than it is missed.

Lots of positives but still have big concerns over our forwardline potency.. our defensive against quick ball movement, our ability to stop 'run ons' and our end game defence. On to next week...

Was more thinking along the lines of a (Grudge Match) considering the Draper controversy, a perfect opportunity for the AFL to hype the start of Gather Round = bums on seats ect.
they should have Adelaide V Essendon as a one out return grudge match in Melbourne for gather round. Imagine this being the sole marquee game in football-starved Melbourne for that round - it would be huge, and Melbourne always turn it on for an event - we should get the Vic government involved, it will be bigger than the GP weekend

Friday night was Martin’s best game distributing from the back half so far I thought.

My impression is that he and McGrath push up as part of our press, but Martin’s dash through the corridor to goal is a set play - it’s a big momentum setter but not the sort of thing you can do all night.

We are definitely missing his entries inside 50, but I’d say his exits from d50 have the potential to be just as important - they were vital this week.

I’d be interested to know our stats for giving up repeat defensive inside 50s, it feels like we’re hacking it out a fair bit less this year

I agree that the 'attacking HB' is now a pivotal role and all teams are chasing their go to kicker. My issue is that it doesn't sit with our strength and our forward press game plan. If you are a half back rebound/slingshot team then absolutely it makes sense (Pies/Geelong) but we are trying to be a manic forward press team and we are leaving our best asset at HB? We have a very poor conversion rate for goals per inside 50 because that final kick is often a poor one.

I'm not saying Martin can't play HB or be very damaging at HB but in my opinion.. his ability to spot up targets was a big reason Langford was soooo dangerous last year and we are missing that big time. I think Langford and Jones would look a lot better if we had Martin making that final kick inside 50.

I think that's why they're developing Roberts on the wing in the vfl
