Hawks board worried about us now, and saying things like 'playing a real side like Geelong on Easter Monday.' My my how the tables have turned.

If we could beat them after all their fanfare about them being the flag favourite and 'unbeatable', I'd be ecstatic.

They dont hate Essendon. Thats a beat up from Derm.

They only hate Geelong and we hate them.

No we hate the bombers….

As far as the Cats go it’s a love hate relationship in my opinion.

Hate that your club is so good, yet respect the work rate that makes you so good.

14 day break seemed to put our Hawks into a slumber. The second half seen us work out some of the rust.

Fully expect an improve Hawthorn and a battle between both teams worthy of the ages on Monday.

Up the Hawkas!

Yeah I thought there was a hatred there, rekindled a bit when Matthew Lloyd sniped someone in his later years.

Well seeing the thread title has got Rivalry in it , and that started in 63 not 89
Mm, I don't really agree with that. Even up until 2008, there wasn't really a Geelong-Hawthorn rivalry.

Yes, we played two GFs against them (and one of them was an absolute classic), but they were 26 years apart with not much in between them until 1987, when Dunstall's two goals in the last 30 seconds at Kardinia in the last match of 1987 knocked us out of the Five.

We played two classic finals against them in '89 and '91, but not much in between.

In 2007, we even played Hawthorn down in Tasmania. When the AFL had a themed "rivalry round", we were given Melbourne. That wouldn't have happened if there was a genuine rivalry.

IMO, up until 2008, Hawthorn was merely a side that we disliked, and we had a few classic games against. Since then, it's been a genuine rivalry.

There was the whole Matthews Bruns incident that really started a lot of animosity in the years leading to 89.
One thing I distinctly remember from the morning of the 08 grand final - one Hawthorn stalwart maybe John Kennedy Snr was talking live on tv and he had - and it shocked me how open he was about it - an absolute disdain for our club and everything about it.
He specifically mentioned the words to our song "we play the game as it should be played" and complained how arrogant or holier-than-thou it was. This wasn't light-hearted banter. This was a hatred from a very grumpy individual.

I dislike everything about them, their attitude, their attire, I have a six sense to identify their supporters in the wild. Never met a Hawthorn supporter that lacked the selfish, narcissistic gene. Both players and supporter carry a level of entitement can't even be matched by European football clubs owned by oligarchs or the investment vehicles of Middle Eastern dictatorships. I morn their successes and cheer their failures.
I have met likeable Hawks fans, they just have to be casual enough that they couldn't name a quarter of their players

I have this kind of weird relationship with Hawthorn.

I grew up near the old Waverley Park, and would sometimes just head down to watch Hawks games as a neutral. This was in the late 90s when the Hawks were hopeless, they'd beaten back the proposed merger but were still on shaky ground, and there'd be like 15-20k people there.

I kind of adopted them as my second team for a while there, in a "feel sorry for the poor old Hawkers on the verge of disappearing" kind of way. I was almost happy to see them emerge again from the mid 2000s onwards with a good young team.

So almost sort of mixed feelings from 2008 onwards - "hate" them like all good Geelong supporters should.....but I remember sitting in half-empty stands cheering on Nick Holland 25 years ago (when very few actual Hawks fans were).....

Same when it comes to footy the all share a smug cockyness about them.

Actually my girlfriend who I'm going with on Monday is one but she's from Qld and only picked Hawks when she moved to Melb due to her cousin buying her membership (still does I think).

She really knows FA about footy and wouldn't be able to name one player.

So it's bearable haha.

I know really nice hawthorn people- sensible, pleasant and all that, but as soon as it turns to the footy they turn snarky and irrational. Weird hey! Maybe all those long years in the wilderness does that. Tigers fans - same thing.

So would our coaching staff have been in the crowd watching last night as to how Port pulled off that first half?
I would think they'd be all over it.

Here is a great write up.
  • going basically man on man in d50 takes away their forward half running game
  • pulling Rozee out of the middle and putting him at half back didn't diminish their midfield but allowed their backline to rebound very well
  • their backline can't deal with chaos in attack

i think a fair bit of that is non-Geelong given our zone strategy and lack of midfield depth but could be interesting seeing it play out.

Clohesy for Stewart. O'Connor or Knev the sub. Perhaps give Ollie Henry another week on a big stage to find form and also another week for Wiltshire to push his case. Backing Stanley to compete hard again as the likely last game of this block before he has a rest. Perhaps Clark to return for the Blues.

I think we might leave Stanley out this week.

Hawthorn only have Chol as a genuine tall with Gunston playing as the second tall forward. Sicily swings forward at times but he's only 188cm so Zuthrie could go to him if needed with Stewart being the rebounder.

I'm not sure who Blicavs plays on if SDK is down back all game and the speed of their smalls is scary.

SDK's best game in the ruck was against Meek down in Geelong last year.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but this is the first Easter Monday clash that won't feature Tom Hawkins!

I have no weird relationship. During their threepeat I was going for them because they were the Victorian club. I would barrack for any Victorian club in a GF that wasn't against us. Except Essendon

That's surprising.

I'd go for any interstate team over the likes of Collingwood, Carlton and Richmond (prob Hawthorn and Essendon too).
