Definitely not a team of varying strength that Geelong outfit. Even if Ablett doesn't perform at his best there's plenty of players that can pick up the slack, and as we saw in 2011, they didn't even need him.

In your opinion do the "teams of varying strength" make Judd a better finals player than Ablett jnr?
2011 saw the emergence of Selwood not just as a good young player, but as "the man". Baby Hawkins evolved too. Lonergan stepped up in his new defensive role. And very importantly, we had a new coach, direction and reset.

Just because the group grew and evolved in 2011 doesn't mean Ablett was redundant to the previous success.

Without him we lose the 2009 grand final, the 2007 prelim and the 2008 grand final becomes a 10 plus goal thrashing. There is no dynasty without his emergence as a superstar in 2007.

If he'd stayed then 2013 almost certainly would've been a 4th premiership in 7 years.

No, that's why I didn't use the term when referencing Ablett Jnr.

Judd performed well in teams of varying strength - a West Coast team who played in two Grand finals, winning one of them, and a Carlton team who qualified on the fringe of finals, once from ninth.

Ablett Jnr performed in winning teams and losing teams.

Martin only performed well in winning teams.

BTW, Hi Falcon.

I refer you to my tally of the poll. It's Ablett, Judd, Voss and then Martin who is closer to Hird and Buckley than Ablett or Judd.
If you recalculated your stats based on recent posts, Martin may very well be last.

If you exclude the obvious Richmond bias posts, it would be clear Martin shouldn't even be in this discussion.

1. Dustin 'Normy' Martin
2.Gary Ablett Jnr,
3. Chris Judd,
4.Michael Voss.
5. Nathen Buckley
6. James Hird
1. Gary Ablett Jnr - most complete midfielder i have see
2. Dusty - was never the best player in the game (Danger was better in his brownlow year) but his finals bumps him up the list. Best finals player I have seen
3. Judd - Shocking kick moves him down my list slightly.
4. Buckley - Great skills and a great player for a long time
5. Hird- versatile and exciting when on
6. Voss - always thought he was massively overrated. Shouldn't be on this list as he is only really on the level of Joel Selwood etc.

I'm surprised at the few people calling Voss overrated.

He won a Brownlow at the Bears and then two league MVPs as captain of the Lions flag winning sides. A couple of B&Fs in premiership years (5 in total) as well, in stacked sides. Probably deserved a Norm Smith too.

Any player with a Brownlow or League MVP in 3 different seasons, 2 of them as premiership captain, is in a very very high tier as a player.

It would be the equivalent of Selwood winning a Brownlow in 2016, a league MVP in 2011 and 2022 and a B&F in 2009 and 2011.

And on top of that, he was clearly the best leader of the six nominated players.

Leadership counts.

Michael Voss was not the best player the year he won the brownlow with mckernan winning the MVP but disqualified for the brownlow. Voss also had a star midfield around him and was arguable not even the best midfielder in his own team the years he won MVPs.
And on top of that, he was clearly the best leader of the six nominated players.

I think people overate him as a player because of his great leadership. Same with Selwood

After careful consideration....

1. GAJ
2. Judd
3. Voss
4. Hird
5. Nathan Buckley

Nicky Buckley
Ricky Martin
Dustin Martin

Hmmmm....looks like Fadge rates Ricky Martin very highly.

This is the 2020's Fadge you can be whoever you want to be friend. But I never would have guessed. :tearsofjoy:

Says the man who rates Peter Senior and all the seniors on BigFooty ahead of Gary Ablett Senior...

At least I'm a bit more selective...

So now you are saying you employed the same device you saw me employ not 2 days ago?

Imitation is the sincerest form Fadge. ;)

And I was merely listing an objective fact, that Peter Senior and the overwhelming majority of senior citizens are equally as successful as Gary Ablett Senior in terms of Premierships won.

You on the other hand rated Ricky Martin ahead of Dustin Martin. We know how attached you are to your Fadge ratings so it is very revealing you chose a gay icon to hitch your wagon to, so to speak. But if you feel you need to express that publicly at this time Fadge then we are all fully supportive. This is an inclusive forum and all people should be encouraged to feel comfortable about being who they are, Fadge, there should be more of it to be honest.

Yes, and my list was also rating the relative footballing abilities of those listed...

But good you see you're not homophobic...

In a long line of unfunny and pathetic attempts at humour, this post is your magnus opus.

Judd wasn't a shocking kick at West Coast, not elite sure, but nowhere near terrible.

You know the saying - opinions are like arseholes..........

Each to their own.

Voss should have a Norm Smith - even those that voted on it admitted they got it wrong. They stuffed up because they awarded it half way through the last quarter when it looked like Collingwood were going to win. Buckley was the second best player on the ground behind Voss at that time, but best for Collingwood, so it was given to the best player on the supposed winning side.
Voss then takes over and steamrolls Collingwood but the votes are already in. Buckley won it because Channel 7 wanted the votes in early for the presentation.
Buckley should be embarrassed to have it, he really should have given it back.

Buckley is probably the best field kick I've ever seen - but he was one of the biggest downhill skiers to play the game. Had no defensive side and no onfeild leadership.
Voss was at his best when the game was on the line - he just bullied his way to a win. If I was putting together a side to play for my life he would be the first one picked.
This is some strange phenomenon that started because of most's hatred for Buckley as a player. If Voss was the best player on the ground at the time - surely he'd have had a hell of a lot more than 4 votes at the time of polling - but he didn't. At least surely he'd have had the most for the Lions, but he didn't - Lappin did. Buckley was clearly the best player on the ground for four quarters, and the full game is on YouTube for all to see. Lappin, Keating, Voss and Rocca can paper, scissors, rock for 2nd place.

As for Buckley having no on-field leadership, Yikes. He dragged two average sides to grand finals and nearly a flag. He was a complete midfielder and outstanding captain.

Gee Voss must have had a great last few minutes to move from 4th place to 1st. Been reported that 3 of the 5 judges votes were collected in last minutes. 2 were at the 15 minute mark of last quarter. He may have overtaken Lappin but.

I don't have a horse in the race, but what are the odds they were thinking Collingwood was going to win and favoured the players from the 'winning' team?

After the halfway point of the third quarter, Collingwood led for a grand total of 8 minutes. So that argument doesn’t hold much merit either.
