Regarding the clearances, we have a very different setup compared to previous seasons and it seems we often play one less player than the opposition at a lot of stoppages, particularly against the Hawks. When we win the clearances we have more space and options to work with which has contributed to improvent in efficiency and uncontested possession count. Previously we were hellbent on winning every clearance but now we can accommodate and still function when opposition wins it. This could explain why MacKay (and Douglas to a lesser degree) have been spending some time on the ball. His pressure acts and tackle counts suggests he's in there to lessen the effectiveness of the opposition's clearance so we get a turnover on the outside and begin our attack.

*No changes this week. Maybe Crouch for Lyons..

This is a good assessment, because increasingly this year, 'quality' clearances are more important not quantity of clearances. Now AFL is increasingly becoming a turnover game, so those bombs out of clearances will either get mopped up and the side will transition down to their goals OR the clearance kick will be paid deliberate if it goes out of bounds. Pressure on clearances is so important, and I've wondered myself if the purpose of Mackay playing in there at times is to give us a slightly different look and pressure the oppo when conceding a clearance. Having said that Charlie could do it.

I think Charlie spent a bit of time at the contest late in the game and did a couple of nice things. I see him as a forward who rests in the midfield playing the role you mention. This sounds a bit ridiculous but he's a burst player and seemed lost and exhausted when up forward. I'm sure he will come good with more game time and could really progress as a player.

Isaac Smith was on 5aa last week and he said Cheney was one of the fastest at their club over 40m
20m wasn't it, although there was a bit of miss communication rowey and bicks meant Kyle Hartigan when they were talking about a play from the Sydney game, when he showed speed, but they said Kyle Cheney and it sounded like Isaac smith just made it up because he didn't have the heart to say he wasn't quick, that's how I took it anyway.

I think Lyons AND crouch should play. We need to make sure we have a solid squad of 26-27 who are playing afl games in the first half of the season

I'd suggest merging Lyons and Mackay into the one player to allow Brad Crouch a spot in the side. We'd then get Jarvid Lykay, line breaking clearance machine goal kicking rebounding inside/outside mid.

Boom. Squad instantly becomes elite.

The only problem with this is that Jarvid Lykay still has David Mackay hidden in there and we all know too well his value.:cool:

Nah they were talking about when Cheney ran past Tom Mitchell to beat him to the over the back ball in the last quarter against sydney where Mitchell ended up giving an in the back free kick to Cheney.

May have been 20m, i was just going from memory.

Ah turns out the miscommunication was between me and them.

I don't doubt that, but straight line running on the training track doesn't necessarily translate to real football speed.

I believe it's a combination of a few things.
- raw speed (is straight line running)
- footy nous and ability to read game (essential to give you that head start and start moving in that direction)
- repeat sprint ability (some players can only turn it on a few times before they are buggered)

"one of" the fastest just means everyone who isn't a ruckman or on the rookie list anyway.

Wouldn't be playing Crouch this week. Can understand both sides of the argument however.

Confident that Crouch won't play, they have been conservative in their approach with him, so why start now against a decimated team at home and risk having him to play a lot of game time when they can manage his return carefully through the SANFL.

If Crouch had an injury free and strong preseason there would be a strong case but he is coming of a three week injury and his tank is not where it should be.

The interesting issue presents itself next week when we play at the Dome, will the Club again be conservative and play him on a surface that is considered to be causing soft tissue injuries?

Sam Kerridge was arguably the fittest on our list. Not surprising he attained the mantle at Carlton or anywhere else he may have gone.

VB took his time trial record back this season. Thing is, he had competition here. According to my die hard Carlton supporting mate, it's not even close there. During their beep tests, he supposedly ran that much further than everybody else that they just stopped the test before he'd finished.

That's Carlton for you - not only is everyone shit, but if someone is too good, they don't want the rest of the squad embarrassed.

Carlton, never change.
