Every team has a good small forward. The Bond role as a pure stopper is valuable. Particularly if your can produce enough run from the other defenders around him.

He actually becomes another true KPD.

We gave him a rare 1 year deal and I can't see him keeping both Milera and Nank out of the side.

3 talls
3 smalls
Laird takes Bonds spot i feel.
Murray
Worrell
Keane (over Butts)
Michalanney
Hinge
Laird
1 more.

Maybe Cumming, but could also play off a wing.
Milera looks like he is in the mix, though I would give him a month in the sanfl.
Nankervis should be next in, but has been managed preseason.
Bond should be considered where we need to lockdown on a small forward.

I’m happy to blood a 7/9year player at the expense of Laird

Based on bigman reports.

FB: Worrell ~ Murray ~ Michalanney
HB: Hinge ~ Keane ~ Laird
C: Dawson ~ Crouch ~ Cumming
R: O'Brien ~ Rankine ~ Peatling
HF: Rachele ~ Fogarty ~ Neale-Bullen
FF: Keays ~ Thilthorpe ~ Walker
B: Curtin ~ Milera ~ Soligo ~ Sholl
S: Berry

Looks quite similar to what I suggested we'd go with, at least personnel wise, back in October

My predicted Matthew Nicks best 23 (updated)

B Worrell - Murray - Michalanney
HB Hinge - Keane - Cumming

R O'Brien - Dawson - Laird
C Soligo - Crouch - Sholl

HF Rankine - Fogarty - Neal-Bullen
F Walker - Thilthorpe - Keays

I Rachele - Murphy - Pick 4 - Peatling
S Berry

Only real difference is I had Draper and Murphy in my predicted side, versus Curtin and Milera

Of course I made a few facetious positional claims in my side (eg Laird midfield vs defence)

Imagine the excitement levels on here if we actually go with this team?

Nice looking team.

I like the fact here's at least one potential elite (or already is) on each line.
I also like the fact that the next tier down from the elites is a large group of good solid footballers who might have long careers ahead of them.
I additionally like the fact that the weakest players in this team will need to fight like hell to hold their place. We must have 6-8 players in the SANFL team who are so close to breaking through if given the opportunity.

I Would be very surprised if Draper doesnt play round 1.

I have copied 1990crow team and made some changes:

Round 1:
FB: Worrell ~ Murray ~ Michalanney

HB: Hinge ~ Keane ~ Laird

C: Dawson ~ Crouch ~ Cumming

R: O'Brien ~ Rankine ~ Soligo

HF: Rachele ~ Fogarty ~ Neale-Bullen

FF: Keays ~ Thilthorpe ~ Walker

B: Curtin ~ Draper ~ Peatling ~ Sholl

Sub From: Berry, Taylor, Nankervis & Milera

Why on earth would you be surprised? Everything so far suggests he won't be.
A lot of us would like to see him in, but not many would be surprised when he isn't.

During Nicks' tenure the one thing he has done is play draftees early.

Rachele, Max and McAsey played first up, Thilthorpe R6 off a limited pre season.

Curtin had to wait a bit as did Pedlar.

Who is your 7th defender?

Reckon with those they were less held back in preseason and a lot of talk by now of them being ones to watch (especially max who not many expected to be)

Thilthorpe was held back a huge amount in his first pre season, especially early on. Rachele came to us after barely playing at all during his draft year (COVID).

We'll learn a bit in the next few weeks, but i wouldn't be at all shocked to see him play R1

I won’t be shocked either way either

I do think he’s less likely than likely to be in the 22. But he could squeeze in there and also could be sub

(And before anyone says he can’t/shoukdnt debut as a sub, while most don’t like it it’s not uncommon and clubs do it so it’s not as taboo for clubs as it is fans. And if SANFL hasn’t started yet it could actually be ok rather than playing a low quality trial game)

I think the bench almost always has a 7th defender.

This was posted recently as Fox Sports guess at our best side. There are a few issues I see, but the defence stood out to me. Maybe it's my bias showing, but to me Laird and Milera in the back 6 make us a worse defensive team (both range from lazy to deliberately inattentive defenders).
The Fox back 7 includes Hinge on the bench.

My Back 7 would be:
Worrell Keane MM
Hinge Murray Dawson/Cumming
Bench: Nankervis

I know it's not what Nicks will do as he will be in 'win now' mode and thinks Laird and Milera will help him with that, but I think my back 6 is both better now and in the long term.
Thoughts?

There is no way we're playing Butts, Murray and Keane all in the backline while leaving Worrell out
