A lot has been made of the Lathlain surface in the past, but as I was leaving it struck me how good a condition it looks to be in.

Can’t comment on how hard it is but to my untrained horticultural eye, it looks pretty good

I am very happy for you. People have. Especially in the 5 years after. It was all about not getting the no1 pick.
I was happy to get no3 for Judd 2007 .He was poor , carrying the pubis injury many of us had never heard of at the time in his 2007 season . I've never heard anyone complain even in the early days for the picks we recieved for him . Josh Kennedy was steak knives and I thought Carlton were generous even tho Kennedy was a raw talent i doubt many would have seen his talent as he took 5 plus years to really hit his straps.

Good to see the full squad back together again for the first time, with 5th+ year players returning from their break. Today’s session lasted around 2 hours, starting just after 9:30 and had begun to wind down around 11:45. A focus on ball movement again and of course the senior players’ MAS fitness test at the beginning.

There was quite a bit going on in terms of numbers on the track and players going in and out of the main training group, so I’ve tried to summarise as best I can. I also do find it quite hard to pick players out at this stage of the preseason, especially if they’re wearing hats. Anyway:
  • I spotted every listed player at some point + Burgiel, so 44 on the track. However there were several players taking it easy today
  • Jamieson and Petruccelle did the least I would say - Jamo walked laps for about 20 minutes and then left, Petch I only saw at the beginning and didn’t really do any training of note.
  • Yeo and Hough also did very little - walking laps with Jamieson at the start and then finishing up.
  • There were two guys doing some stair work for about half an hour on the grandstand after the above left the track, but they were too far away for me to make out who they were - so it’s possible some of the guys I just mentioned left to do other work after walking laps on Oval 2
  • I got a close look at Hough as he was walking past and he looks an AFL level size now. Pretty good result given how thin he was a few years ago
  • Chesser and Sheed did run throughs away from the main group to start. Chesser finished up fairly quickly, Sheed did a little bit extra but neither really joined the main group at any stage.
  • Hutchinson, Bazzo and Dewar walked/jogged laps away from the main group to start. Bazzo finished up first, Hutch then did some kicking with Dewar before finishing up. Dewar joined in with the main group after about an hour
  • Cole and Johnston did the first hour or so with the main group before splitting off and doing run through and some kicking away from the main group.
  • Johnston was wearing a significant brace on his right arm though it didn’t appear to be bothering him too much - was still able to kick, mark and handball. FWIW I overheard him telling a fan that his elbow was “a bit sore”
  • To summarise the above - at 10:30 (an hour into the session) I did another head count and could not see the following players: Sheed, Yeo, Chesser, Hough, Petruccelle, Bazzo, Jamieson, Hutchinson
  • Allen trained fully and has been doing so every time I’ve been to training this preseason so far (3 times). I don’t doubt that his knee is something he’ll need to manage for the rest of his career, but I wouldn’t buy into the fear and concern being spouted recently by pundits like Vlahos.
  • Archer Reid and Jack Williams both look to have added size - in particular I am very impressed by Williams. His size, how he’s moving and the fact that he’s emerging as one of the best runners in the young crop - consistently in the faster half of the running groups, and certainly the best among the young talls. If I recall back to last preseason this was not at all the case. These two were the last on the track, practicing set shots to finish until around 11:55.
  • Hewett was again near the front of the running group - a surprise to me considering how interrupted his training has been the last 12 months.
  • The players did a full field ball movement drill to finish the session. Of note - Maric, Baker and Ginbey were down back, Archer Reid still up forward as a marking target.
  • Harley did most of the full session except the parts with contact
  • Long did most of the session (including the fitness test) but finished up a bit early.
  • There was a drill focusing on handballing in congestion (with contact) late in the session. Really liked the intensity here, led by Ginbey who didn’t hold back with his tackling
  • I hate to say it but Burgiel appears to be pretty consistently in the back half of running groups with the big blokes. I actually didn’t mind him today though - ran hard in the ball movement drills and was sharp by foot. Clearly though his tank isn’t his strong suit
  • All 6 draftees were on track. To my surprise they not only did the MAS running test but also trained with the main group for a good 90 mins. After 11 they mostly sat out of the drills as a coach explained to them how they worked
  • Flynn looks in good nick and performed fairly well in the fitness test, which I will get to in a moment…

Now, like last year the senior players (+ draftees) did the MAS running test. For those who don’t recall, it’s a bit like a beep test - the players run around a large ~400m loop on the oval marked in regular intervals by cones. They need to reach the next set of cones before a bell rings, and those bell chimes get increasingly frequent - so the players need to increase their speed to keep up. They just go for as long as they can, so after a while players begin to drop off.

I tried my best to document in what order the players stopped running. It’s quite hard to keep track of so this order is only roughly accurate, but here is a guide of how they went:
  • Ryan and Champion were the first to finish, followed by Shanahan, Gross and Grego
  • McGovern then finished, followed by Kelly
  • Flynn, Edwards and B.Williams were the next to stop (in that order)
  • Allen was next, followed by Davis (who was the best performed of the draftees) and then Waterman
  • Cripps and Duggan finished after that at around the same time
  • Leaving the top 3 (in order) as Cole, Baker and Graham

Plenty complained on here back in the day.

Our clubs social media team leaves a lot to be desired sometimes. Not a single live post or action shot from today's session. If it weren't for Bo Allen saying they pulled the young blokes out half way through the session you wouldn't even know the Eagles were open today.

Poor Poor Poor.

Playing devils advokent..

Isn't Graham supposed to firstly be B grader, but also isn't he always constantly injured? I'm seeing his fitness as a positive.

That said, not sure what someone like Kelly's excuse is, losing to a bloke like Graham. Would love to see some actual times/results of this thing.
Other than his debut year and last season (14 games) he's played between 16-22 games a year for his whole career. If he's constantly injured it must be minor stuff

Thanks LittleFires great write up!

Really appreciate the detail above - leaves me really optimistic for the beginning of preseason!

Jack Williams is going to be our version of Pavlich where he's a utility plug a hole type this season before he just becomes too dominant we have to play him on ball like a Blicavs type midfielder.

As much as I want to agree with you.... Pavlich is one of the greatest players to ever play, JW should never be compared to him (i'd like to say yet, but I can't). Respect given where its due

Too be fair back in the day the fans didn’t know Kennedy was going to turn into a club legend, we all just saw the best player in the comp and our captain getting traded for pick 3 instead of pick 1.
Oh, of course. Was just pointing out that people complained at the time, as the guy I quoted said he didn't know anyone who did.

Poor Poor Poor.

Relax Sally, if there isn’t a bunch of media in the making from the draftees first session today I’d be surprised.

If they chose not to do live / stories today (like they actually have been doing regularly this pre-season in the sessions to date) it may have been so the new guys didn’t get too flooded / distracted by it day one. Deep breaths please, they are definitely on the improve overall imo

So Kelly beat -

McGovern and Ryan. Plus a bunch of kids in Malakai, Grego, Shanahan and Gross.

Absolutely huge.

Kelly is such a half asleep at all times, unaccountable passenger. So much talent but barely any gusto or appetite to push himself it seems. Burgiel probably chose him as the player he would model himself on, woopsieeeee lol

Yeah lol not the best start for his contract year. Is one of the few who doesn't come back early then is one of the worst performed in the fitness test.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He carried a hip or knee injury through a lot of last year that clearly impacted his running. Hopefully it has cleared up over the break and he just needs to build fitness.
