Round 7 Honest Match Review

Freason was in near perfect nick. Centre will need a little water in coming weeks.
There was a 1 point advantage kicking to the western end.
Manton kicks better than his old man. Also he is a gun. Port Melb are crazy for not playing him more.
Willy have amazing support.
President thought they were playing OT not OI. A big fine for that one.
Both reserves teams provided great banter behind the goals for the whole seniors game.
Two teams battled hard all day.
The least amount of niggle ever at a CYMS v OI game.
Senior players loved being fed with free hot dogs after the game.

Quarter 1
Hoes started like a house on fire, kicking 3 pick goals. Then the Manton show started.
Willy finished the quarter with 3 quickies of their own to go 5 points up.

Quarter 2
Pleas everyone do yourself a favour and see the worst deliberate point ever. Not only was it the worst decision, but he lined him up totally wrong. A gift of a goal. Then Matton got a free 15 out (was there) and in a blink Willy were 15 points up. The next 20 minutes saw OI get the lead back, but actually lost an opportunity to kick a winning score. 7.3 to 9.11.

3rd quarter saw Willy regain the some momentum but OI went into the last with a slender lead.

4th quarter was a pure arm wrestle with both team kicking 2 goals each.

More eyes were on the timekeeper that a Rachel Welsh poster.

OI getting up by 3 points.

Take aways.

3 50 metre penalty goals yesterday(all warranted)
2 of the worst deliberates paid in a game of football.
A coupe of onballers from both team will need new jumpers after being held by opposition players all day (1 from each team)
Full forwards in full flight are great to watch)

Overall

B Grade is very close.
After 7 rounds who would have have thunk to C Grade teams in the top 3 (for now).
Depth maybe the key for success in 2024.

Go Hoes

Go Hoes

Good report Max. I was looking forward to sharing one or two, but a couple of injections on Friday put an end to my Saturday football fix.

Pine Lodge beckons.

If you had said to me at the start of the year De La would drop 3 close games at Dairy Bell, I would have laughed you off this forum.

Amazing that they seem to be jekyll & hyde from a home and away perspective. While the evenness of the comp is brilliant, on a week to week basis you need to lockdown wins at home.

Just hoping it doesn't bit them on the bum later in the year.

Full credit to OC on Saturday, very well drilled side who deserved the win.

Most teams aren’t performing well at home. We’re 1 for 3 at home and 4 for 4 away.

Lucky for OC that they got to play on the Dairy Bell in September last year.

To be fair GY the losses have all been by under goal. A bounce here or a bounce there and it's a different result. Umpiring seems to be a focus this week. Thought the umpiring in general was very good however the number of 50 metre penalties was off the charts. I’m was told there were 11 given before ¾ times. 7 against DLS and about 4 led directly to goals. Maybe some ill-discipline, maybe some over officiating. Probably a combination of both but players from both sides seemed genuinely miffed. Having said that OC deserved the win and 3 late DLS goals probably flattered the home team.

All under a goal after coming from the clouds on all 3 occasions.

Dairy Bell needs to be the fortress that it once was.

This weekend's tips:

Beaumaris vs Old Geelong - The Sharks are struggling and while they are always better at home, I think OG's are travelling better.
Old Camberwell vs Caulfield Grammarians - If Caulfield kick straight they are right in this, but they haven't done that yet so am sticking with the home team just.
Old Ivanhoe vs Old Haileybury - The Bloods are the best team in the comp.
Old Trinity vs Williamstown - Nice to see Willy get on the board, but OT at home is too much.
St Bedes Mentone vs De La Salle OC - The Tiges I think may have lost some hope now and De La will be on the rebound.

Camberwell is a shithole and shocking wet

Shithole is far too strong. Ground is still in reasonable condition after council finally spent some cash refurbishing it in the offseason.

Christ Caulfield were young on Saturday. Credit to 'em for making a game of it after it looked pretty one-sided at half time. Old Camberwell not thrilled with their intensity, but happy to take the 4 points into the big test at Haileybury after the bye

Amusing story going around that three Caulfield ressies players somehow couldn't make the game all of a sudden come Saturday morning and not one of them had the stones to call the coach and tell him themselves.

Well last season, their ressies forfeited 2 or more matches in Premier for this reason.
Odd given the school linkage comes from a recent history (last 10 - 15 years) of always being contenders in the APS. Can’t blame the coed school factor of fewer boys, as plenty of other coed schools have VAFA clubs & appear to be fine with player numbers. Curiously Old Haileybury had similar hiccups last season also, but are killing it now in the seniors…
An entire extended debate on reasons, could be a whole thread in itself…for just those 2 clubs.

That said of co-ed school ‘old collegians’ clubs, it’s really only Collegians (Wesley) that continue to hold steady / succeed at Premier ‘seniors’ level.
While not often more than mid-ladder in the APS. Maybe their history of being the founders of the ammo’s keeps them solid & driven. Others seem to be either up & down across A to C grades, or capped at being Premier B specialists.

The senior exodus from Caulfield after 2022 is well known. Lot's of reasons and crazy $$$ was a large part of it. However the relationship with the school is still very strong and the young kids are rebuilding the Fields back up. We have 2 Under 19's team (which is a stretch - but gives everyone who wants a game a run) for the first time ever and there will be a large cohort graduating to senior ranks next year. The youth in the senior side on the weekend was due to injuries, but geez they had a crack!

It tough going for our Reserves this season, through this rebuild, but all the kids playing are trying their hearts out and want to be there. Up until last season Caulfield's Reserves regularly played finals and were very competitive. The wheel will turn and we'll be back with some depth soon enough.

Old Haileybury have some serious top end talent, but their reserves have been ordinary for a very long time. I believe the jump from the Unders level they play at to A or B Sen/Res level is the issue.

Round 8 OI v OH (Poo Browns V the Magentas)
Conditions near perfect. 1-2 goal (at best) favouring the Lodge end
Ground a firm 8.
Last time we played was in OH's C Grade Premiership year. (2015 i believe)

Let me say from the outset of my report, the best team won on the day. No disputing the fact. So what is to follow doesnt change this fact.

However

1st Quarter OH kicking to the scoring end.

After 5 minutes the game was effectively over. 4 goals, (3 from free kicks, 1 howler, 2 50:50). That ended up being the final margin.

At one stage it was 33 to 0.

OH were dominating with very clean possession and their pressure reminded me of an old fashion A Grade v C Grade smashing.

Then OI found its feet and put the next 3 goals in the board. OI looked stronger with the return of No. 18 at full forward.

Two late goals saw OH go into quarter time leading by 32 points.

2nd quarter saw the coach rearrange the magnets, getting his match ups better, especially in the back line. These changes saw OH remain goals in quarter 2. After kicking the 2nd goal 5.25 into the 1st, Seccull was hell by one of our young backmen.

We then lost two players for the rest of the game, but it appears teams who are down on rotations appear not to be to badly affected.

We kept OH goalless and a late miss by OI would have/could have (but didn't) create some doubts.

Pressure from both teams was high, and it appeared that the umpires also settled down.

The rain came and went during the half time break. This helped OH as they flexed their muscles and kicked 4 to 2 goals.

Game over. injury to Jones (OH) who was a little proppy from a 1st quarter clash with the turf.

4th Quarter saw OI win the quarter 3 to 2 goals.

Highlight of the day was a barrel from Reed Jepsen from full back, and the return of No. 18

OH were more clinical around goals/ground when it counted.

Summary

OH had 5-6 VFL players playing. OI has 2 and none played.
OH were (according to themselves) nearly at full strength.
OI were without 5 key players.
OH were physically bigger than OI across the ground. Seccull and Steele in the middle are very impossing.
OH skills are higher than anyone Ive seen this year (I missed DLS due to wifey booking a little getaway that weekend)
OH again have very little to offer from the reserve team. (They have a crack, but other then Gleadhill who is a OH legend, and the only player on OH's list that would have previously played OI, they can hope for some Under 19's or other VFL listed players). We have 2.

I had to get the green top on the weekend for my 1st and I hope last run. Knee surgeon on Tuesday. The OH reserve field umpire (young James) was amazing. He covered 75% of the ground and I hobbled the remaining 25%.

OI still have the best lunches and afternoon tea bar none. Canteen does its job.

Can someone give advise on what to do tomorrow and Thursday night. Surely there is some football on somewhere.

Thank you, Maxwell,

It's just that you normally file promptly. Often on the evening of the match. Yet here we are on a Monday evening and it took some prompting to get you energised. We devotees who look forward to your rundown of the day's events were wondering why the 'no appearance your worship'

A "Maxwell is a little touchy this week" M

Best wishes with the knee surgery. If you don't mind me asking, the orthopod?
