From reading the media over the past week it seems other clubs have had some pretty serious intra club game hit outs, I wonder when we will start ramping things up?

Max has all the traits to be one of the best, if not the best Forward in the game. However we need to see some intangibles from him such as determination, persistence and grit.
Displaying traits like these, might just allow us to witness him sprinting out on a lead and not just stand in the goal square, leading up the ground, chasing and applying pressure, and sacrificing his own game to help others (ie bragging his opponent/s out of the dangerous space).
Only time will tell. But I'll cross my fingers and pray, because a 50+ goal season from a leading forward wil make us look like a completely different team.

Max is looking in fantastic condition heading into this season and I can't wait for him to hopefully put together his most consistent and damaging year at the level. If he's firing, then we will hopefully be being games of football.

Also, just saw one of the first photos of Tauru in training kit since being drafted. Does anyone know if he's still a few weeks off from getting into full training? Believe the original timeframe was February?

Had umpires down before Xmas and again on Wednesday. Ramping it up and full match sim will be very soon I would imagine.

FWIW IMO Max will never be a lead up player. He is never fitter but relies on clean quick delivery to be one on one. Our improving midfield should help this.

Tauru was on the bike prior to Christmas and was running on Wednesday so is beginning the process.

I think he needs to just be a cog in the machine... get his 2.5 goals a week and let the other forwards spread the load. 40 to 50 from Max. 25 each from Sharman, Hammer, Owens and Snags, 20 from Butler and double figures from guys like Wood, Marshall etc and then a few randoms from the mids and we are looking potent. Just need them all to stay fit now.

If they've bulked him he's not going to be used as a lead up player. That looks like they are setting him to be the pack crasher at the top of the square.

my first reaction is to hate this, but also seeing how well Thilthorpe did for the crows the second half of the season as FF gorilla gives me a bit of hope that it's still viable

I think he has naturally filled out, but he was never a lead up forward. Hammer, Titanic, and the smalls are all repeat lead players.
King one on one is a better option

Repeat entries when the defence has zoned back will be where his size is a factor.

if we can get him one out and put it into space for him it will be a very high percentage play, even with someone in the hole, the key is to put it 15 to 20 metres in front of him. Hopefully he will be stronger in the wrestle too now (not that he was ever particularly weak), which will help when we drop it on his head.

but he still has to move and reset, repeated leads even if they're not flat chat repeat sprints, we've got to keep their defense churning, just didn't see enough of it with him in the side last year

Watch the vid from training - long bombs to a contest in the goal square - only "fwd" hit up on a lead was Marshall.

Completely agree that he (and all the other fwds) need to move more to offer options. Its the only way you can defences out of position.

I want peak G Train. Stick the arse out to push his player off balance, then elbow them and run hard at the ball. Only needed about 10 meters to get proper separation.

Training Friday 17th January

Arrived at 10.30am and the boys were already into their drills.

3 teams split into Black, Yellow & Purple

Ball movement drills (small ground set up - wing to wing).
Focus on bringing it out from the backline and defending the corridor and forcing defenders into long kicks down the line. Lots of positive feedback & celebrating by Bolton when the boys did it well. Must say Bolton is very good at providing feedback. Picks up details and seems like a perfectionist. I've noticed that a few times this pre-season he is running training. He's really good at spotting the small things and letting players know (eg, positioning).

Sinclairā€™s skills sublime. His ability to pick out passes short and long is excellent. Same for Hill.

Sharman definitely looking like heā€™s continued to fill out. Now has a mature body.

Boxshall really prominent in drills for a young kid. Kicking still a question mark for me. Good when not under pressure so it will be interesting to watch this in match sims/practice matches when the pressure is on. But very strong (comparisons to Steele are spot on - kicking aside).

One thing I noticed is very quick ball movement. Short sharp kicks and handballs. Resembled the second half of last year rather than the first half where our ball movement was slow and tedious.

Collard and Henry in rehab. Hastie running laps. Tairu on exercise bike along with Said.

Scratch match. Black vs Red.

Black team included Webster, Hill, Sincs, Howard, Steele, Higgo, Wilson, Pou, Nas, Wilkie, Sharmon, Macrae, King, Marshall, Wood, Butler, Owens, Cordy.

The remaining 'senior' players that were in the Red team included Hugo, Windy, Jones, Byrnes, Stocker & Caminiti.

Boxshall nice hands out of a very congested pack. Acknowledged by Lenny. This kid is tough. I'd have him in front of Max Hall at this stage, and wouldn't be surprised if he debut at some point this season.

Sharman very good in the black forward line. Set one up and kicked one seconds later.

DRINKS BREAK

A few jumper swaps. Wilson now in Red team - swapped with Windy.

Sharman switched to backline.

Caminiti played defence on King.

It is clear that the focus is on defending the corridor and forcing the opposition to kick long down the line. Many of the coaches quite vocal in making sure of this during the match sim, and celebrating when it was done well.

Arie not great at his positioning in defence. Lots of feedback from both coaches and teammates on where to position himself. Seems to be always out of position. Aside from his lethal left foot, he has a long way to go IMO.

Overall, a pretty good session. Tricky conditions as it was quite windy, but good intensity. Boys look seriously fit!

anyone going today to training?
Yeah I went with my daughter.

17th Jan

Henry, Collard, Hastie, Said and Barratt all rehab. No compression on for Barratt. Looks to be running OK. Might have just had awareness or tightness.

Henry and Collard looked to be nearly at full speed. Henry ran alot of laps and looked to be moving pretty well. Collard definitely had a few 100% effort sprints on the other side.

Tauru on field. Rehab. Little bit of running. Not much though. Then spent time on bike.

Spoke to Clark - he's fine. Just sore

First drill that broke up into backs fwds mids. Caminiti, Owens Wilson all in fwds. Did separate drills for each group. Defenders worked on 2 on 1 aerial contests. Mids on the release kick out. Fwds lead up hits.

Carroll in mids has unreal speed. Think he will bring a lot to the fwd line. Do him and Hall both fit? With Higgins and Butler?

Max Hall got a lot of love out on the field. Pressure and tackling excellent. Really impressed.

NAS can be paid whatever he wants. The bloke is a freak. He can just get himself out of trouble every time.

Boyd is so quick once it hits the ground. Is going to be a bull. Think he will play a few games. When the ruckmen were off on there own they did some sprints. Marshall and Boyd blew Heath away. Marshall just beat Boyd.

Next drill they broke into 2 teams and the drill definitely favoured the black team. Working on defensive positioning and fast ball movement.

Jones, Windy, hall, Carroll, keeler, caminiti, shoenmaker, Garcia all in B team.

Cordy in A team. In defence ?????

But they switched players around. So might be just trying to even up the teams. Was pretty even. But of red team got it they just gave it to black. Red kicked out and worked the hall out of Defence but didn't get too far down the ground.

Fair bit of full ground work. Close in contested work. Then a drill that was very narrow across the ground. Working on pressure in tight. Those short 45 kicks. If no option it was long down the line and take it over the line.

Heath, Marshall and Boyd all did a bit of tap work against each other. Dodson was in the running group.

Looks like they were trying to go out wide and use the corridor closer to the 50. Steele and Phillipou not happy at stages with some of the players decisions to keep the ball out wide.

Owens and Hall stayed out and worked on goal kicking.

Noticed Goddard also working with Arie on positioning at the end of training.

Think match sim pretty close. Most drills seemed to be either contested or longer drills.

Fingers crossed all those mentioned above in rehab are just sore. The group is slowly getting bigger.

Carroll looks to have improved his tank alot. In Dec he was labouring at the back. But he held on to his group.

Alot to like about Boxshall. He takes them on. But can get himself into trouble. Think he could be a very good player. Just needs time to understand his strengths.

Dodson seems bigger than before Xmas.

That's about all I can remember.

Thatā€™s why I said necessarily.
It wasnā€™t a blanket statement.
Just because you can play, doesnā€™t mean you can coach.
Eg I donā€™t think Roo would be a good coach.
Being an absolutely driven professional and superstar, Iā€™m not sure heā€™d be able to necessarily get the best out of those who arenā€™t.
Just my opinion.
again agree,i rejoice everytime harvey misses the saints job for the same reason, superstar player but i dont think a coach, however you really dont know till they have a go,years ago i said sam day and scott lycett are the 2 worst players ive seen in the history of the game, one won a flag and the other just got picked up by the reigning premier,on top of an already 14 year career,i just think someone of the ilk of selwood would be a mistake i could cope with, big upside if it goes the other way, might even get an ldu or brayshaw over the line, anyway seems his appearance at training has been explained

Training today - a few observations:

Like the look of Dodson - good size, moves well and skills pretty good - think we might have something good here

Higgo looks fit (& a little lighter?) - seems to be running better

Caminiti looked fit and keen

Keeler - has all the attributes and skill - I think he seems a bit more focussed

Ari - certainly a weapon with that boot - still a question mark from me re how good a defender he is

Wilson - definitely stronger but just as quick and great endurance - the more games he plays the better he will get - his ceiling could be anything

NAS - not saying anything we donā€™t already know but just a highly skilled natural athlete - kicked an outstanding solo goal from a congested drill.

Subject to luck with injuries Iā€™m increasingly bullish about this year

Thanks for all the reports. I'll think about getting more bullish if we beat Port at Moorabbin in the scratch match.
We haven't been able to beat them much anywhere for 15 years so I'll take a win on the Linton St turf as good a sign as any until Rd 1!
