Apparently Norfolk Island exports some seeds.

Minimal amounts of them, but it's probably more than they import from the US so TARIFF THEM

US: “Hey Norfolk hi do you mind if we buy your seeds that we can’t get anywhere else?”

Norfolk: “Sure no problem we can arrange that for a friend”

US: “Thanks partner. Oh by the way because you’re so kind as to provide us with those seeds we’re going to whack you with 30% tariff even though it makes no sense”

Norfolk: ????!

Listening to the radio, it was noted that most Australian beef goes into burgers over there. So expect the price of a Big Mac or a Whopper to rise pretty quickly. Can't imagine that will play out well.

BTW - his presser was pretty funny. When he introduced a man that knows more about industry than economists and professors, it was of course, a total South Park stereotype complete with Maga hat and Hulk Hogan moustache talking about bringing back our "jerbs". Not a single indicator of how many jobs, the tariffs would create. Not how long it would take or cost to build the infrastructure. Nothing about how automation is now a major part of the automobile industry and that your traditional factory workers probably won't have jobs anyway. Nothing on how much an American made car would cost compared to a foreign import.
States imports a lot of cheap cuts for burgers and exports a lot of higher quality cuts. THey're effectively adding a tax to their burgers and it's likely that both their exports and imports will go down as some cuts that were being exported will be turned into mince.

Meanwhile we'll export less and in the short term should have cheaper beef due to an oversupply.

Interesting Trump mentioned companies setting up manufacturing in the USA with Apple being one of them. Apple currently manufactured their product in China and will spend $500 billion to set up in the USA. In the meantime their products will incur a 36% China tariff. It will take at least a couple of years to set up manufacturing in the USA and at huge cost.
So basically an iPhone is going to go up 30-40%
Unless Apple manufacture in China then export to a distribution center in say Australia which then exports to the USA at 10% tariff.
Australia could gain a lot from Trump's tarriffs

Europe are talking putting tariffs on US imports which would make US beef 20% more expensive opening up a huge market for countries like Australia.

Wonder how bad things are going to have to get there for the MAGA cognitive dissonance to start melting.
Lot of people going to be worse of financially (not the ones that Trump cares about).
It’s a cult. Things will have to get much, much worse.

When religious cult leaders name a date for their messiah to return, and the date comes and goes with no apparent visit by the messiah, most cult members still stay on.

They could lose their job, whilst prices skyrocket, end up on the streets and then personally deported to an El Salvador prison by Trump himself and they'll still blame Joe Biden or woke or whatever.

It's only just started. Most importing companies were stocking up in anticipation of the tariffs.

It won't really be for a few months until people notice price increases and not until the end of the year until there's enough reportable GDP, inflation and wage data to make a firm finding.

People at large organisations are measuring and predicting these things, and overnight trading of US stock futures indicates the market thinks it's a bad idea with stocks falling around 3%.

In addition to tariffs and inflation, the US Dollar is dropping, and will likely drop more. So there's another 10% on prices as well, even though most existing contracts will be in USD, new contracts will need to include the change in currency, and some might already have a mechanism to change.

There are some people in comments on these posts claiming that Trump had to put tariffs on these random territories owned by countries like Australia so we couldn't find a legal loophole to import/export through there to avoid the tariffs :tearsofjoy:

Yep, I'm sure Australia are going to start exporting beef to the US through an uninhabitable island next to Antartica to avoid those pesky tariffs! :expressionless:

If those penguins play their cards correctly, the Heard and McDonald Isalnds could become a huge trading hub, a new Singapore right next to Antarctica.

Especially if we tell Donald there is Rare Earth in Antarctica, and those Antarctic penguins on American bases down there are all part of one huge gang, with tattoos all over their body. He wont be able to help himself; he will have to invade, or at least send JD there.

The Cayman Islands 2.0?
What tariff is put on the Cayman Islands? I guess they don't export anything just launder money.

The response from the deputy Whitehouse press secretary is getting absolutely roasted in comments with their own AI tools they used to come up with this tariff plan haha
