If you're assuming all and sundry then I don't agree with you.

As for the rest of your post you haven't mentioned deterrence for others that might think of committing a serious crime >in the future<

Which is the point I'm making, I'm not arguing harsh punishment amounts to criminals that have already committed a serious crime won't do it again, as you're pointing out.
Deterrence has been shown to not work. The people that make careful long term plans, generally aren't committing crime.

And the people committing crime aren't doing it because they will get 10 years, not 20 when they are caught, they are doing it because they don't think they will be caught, or, more likely, getting caught hasn't even entered their heads.

And, most of all, almost none of them could tell you what the exact legal definition of the crime they are committing is, or what the penalty is.

People who don't contemplate getting caught, and who don't know what the penalty for the crime is, aren't influenced to not commit the crime, just because you made the penalty harsher. A fact they are also unlikely to know.

Goodnight beef industry.
Opportunity for new Export Markets.
USDA shows foreign Exports of 10.45B, many on that list alone are in the Pacific Region and subject to Trumps new tariffs so could easily switch to importing better beef and abandon US Farmers (poor ****ers always caught in Tariff wars)

In a statement after Trump announced the reciprocal tariffs, the National Restaurant Association said levies “at this scale will create change and disruption that restaurant operators will have to navigate to keep their restaurants open.” Tariffs will cause food and packaging costs to rise and add uncertainty to availability, while pushing prices up for consumers, the association said.

The National Retail Federation said in a statement that the tariffs would cause more anxiety and uncertainty for American businesses and consumers. Tariffs are not paid for by foreign countries or suppliers, but by U.S. importers, the group said, adding that “the immediate implementation of these tariffs is a massive undertaking.” Typically governments give a lot more notice for changes to tariffs to give business time to prepare.

The National Association of Manufacturers said it is still parsing the details and implications of the president’s tariffs. But the group’s president, Jay Timmons, said in a statement: “The high costs of new tariffs threaten investment, jobs, supply chains and, in turn, America’s ability to outcompete other nations and lead as the preeminent manufacturing superpower.”
Nyt
They dont seem too happy

If tariffs had to be approved by Congress we'd never be hearing about them. The only reason Trump likes them is because they can be done by Executive Order bypassing all that annoying oversight.
Except they are meant to fall under the purview of Congress, are they not? Trump has tried to get around this by declaring a state of emergency (around drugs coming into the US), thereby giving himself some tariff power, but Congress should be able to challenge that if they hadn’t decided to give up many of their powers to him. That (a challenge from Congress) is what is now starting to happen.

The Trump administration abruptly laid off the entire staff running the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps roughly 6.2 million people from Maine to Texas pay their heating and cooling bills. The layoffs were part of the purge of roughly 10,000 employees from the Health and Human Services Department.

No longer MAGA, it's MAEA - Make America expensive again, and the fools over there cannot see this, a someone works for a major shipping line, tariffs are easy money to pass on to the end buyer, who will in turn pass it on to the consumer, going to fun watching the penny drop for MAGA eventually.

Listening to the radio, it was noted that most Australian beef goes into burgers over there. So expect the price of a Big Mac or a Whopper to rise pretty quickly. Can't imagine that will play out well.

BTW - his presser was pretty funny. When he introduced a man that knows more about industry than economists and professors, it was of course, a total South Park stereotype complete with Maga hat and Hulk Hogan moustache talking about bringing back our "jerbs". Not a single indicator of how many jobs, the tariffs would create. Not how long it would take or cost to build the infrastructure. Nothing about how automation is now a major part of the automobile industry and that your traditional factory workers probably won't have jobs anyway. Nothing on how much an American made car would cost compared to a foreign import.

That economic genius Trump raking in bazillions from his Liberation Day Tariff announcement, the States are back, baby!
And Norfolk island is part of a Australia for you Russian bots

Who knew Norfolk Island exported so many Colleen McCullough books

Assume we’ll have a win for beef exporting in East Asia as that part of the world will respond to US tariffs. Also assume the US needs our beef so the consumer will have to wear it.

If the PM is smart, he would be on the phone right now to those nations hit hardest with tariffs and start making deals.

Watch this space. Give it 12 months and he will be protesting with pitch forks on how Trump ruined his life.
