mate it already exploded. him and the current playing group are done. he'll be playing good footy for an interstate club soon enough

Then we’ll just get him for free.
Why would we pay?

Zac will still be a restricted free agent at 2026, we have then the option of matching any rival offers and he still stays or we let him go and get a single band1 compo which will probably be just after our first rd in 26. If he goes this year then it would be 2 first rds, you would think.

yeah, but getting picks for a star player, even high picks, is like getting your car written off by the insurance company. Very unlikely to replace what you have lost.

And despite whatever circle work you guys are doing in here, you know youre not getting 2 top 5 picks or whatever it is
We're also not letting him go for a packet of chips, such as JUH.

Two top 5 picks would be a bit far fetched - but not by much. If he goes it will be for 2 first round picks, something around the mark of 5 + 10. He's young, super talented, and pretty much every Vic club will be reaching to get him. He won't come cheap.

You think the club has an offer for him this year ? Another distraction we, or he don’t need.

I know we got screwed with Houston, but Butters is worth so much more than Houston at the trade table.

Midfielders that are ranked in the top 3 or 4 players in the comp and in prime age, the trade offers have to be huge.

What would Collingwood want for Daicos? This is where the conversations need to start.

2 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder.
Essendon have it. 2, 5, 23, 30 at the moment. Butters would add some much needed class.
Richmond don't have the 2nd rounder but could easily get it. They have 4 and 9.

With our picks, we'd be wanting the Dyson Sharp and Cody Curtain types of players.

I still think he's staying.

The whole 'x picks in the top y' discussion is pointless. The way it works is a player nominates a club and then the price will be 2 first round picks and possibly change depending on how good those first round picks are. If the club he wants to go to only has mid or late first round picks then that's just our bad luck (we benefited from the reverse in the JHF trade). The AFL industry is far too matey matey and nowhere close to ruthless enough to actually demand a high price at the trade table, it's not just a Port thing.

Gone, and we'll get feck all for him. We rolled over on the Houston trade when we had 2 more years to run on that contract.

No point pretending were going to get anything more then a first round and then some shit kicker, delisted 27yo from a Victorian club.

Can't wait for Bergman next

Hold him to his contact. Match the free agency offer. Tell him Nick Stevens says hi. Simple.

Matching the free agency offer does not mean the player remains at Port like it would in US sports. All it means is that Butters can either choose to stay at Port on the new deal, or if he says no, it's up to the two clubs to negotiate a trade. In the event no trade is reached, he then goes to the draft.

It's absurd that the media are discussing this so far away from his actual free agency date. The AFL wants to be like US sports so much, but they need to realise there's an element of professionalism and maturity when it comes to player movement. When you've got players like Oscar Allen meeting the opposition coach the day after a game about a potential move it's so obvious how bush league this mob truly is.

maybe this has been mentioned, but what about JUH for Butters, more or less?

Of course Butters is a proven gun and marra is a proven head case, but also potential gun. At 22yo, moving interstate away from 'the bad influences' could get him tracking again.

Could be a classic win win, altho the risk is definately on your side. I think the dogs would need to throw in their 1st in exchange for your second or something like that.

The talk about how close Butters is with Ken and the idea that this is somehow tied to if he stays or goes is nuts. If that's the reason, see you later. But it does further demonstrate how ****ing dumb this whole 'succession plan' is. We Ken won't be coaching and completely Rob Josh of a whole year to develop relationships with the players in the role of senior coach. Now you could argue he's the midfield coach and that relationship Should already be there but he's beholden to Ken's plans.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Butters is so much closer to Carr than Ken. Rozee is the one in love with Daddy, Zac absolutely loves Carr.

Yeah we should have bashed Houston to stay. To hell with Moraes, Berry and Whitlock.
