how do we read scott saying guthrie and Hawkins are still a live chance for finals? Just trolling the opposition?

Greater than 0 is still a chance, just not a very high chance. Could see a version of events where we see C.Guthrie being a sub, if he got through a VFL game or 2. Could see Hawkins play if he have an injury to a KPF or 2, not ideal but everyone should be preparing to be in the best condition that can be whether they are called up or not.

VFL is finals only now so Guthrie can't play in them

Would be hella risky to call him up with only match sims and training for finals

Hawkins only plays at this point if Neale is injured

Pretty sure teams that are still in the AFL finals can play anyone in the VFL finals even if they haven't played any games in the VFL during the H&A season

I just think that will take of itself through attrition. If you are recruiting a 23-24 year old Pickett you are doing so for the next 8 years not just next year.

We are not recruiting kosi for what he would cost when we are stacked for small fwds.
We need to replace ageing mids (hence smith), a ruck (as conway isnt durable) and a kpd and maybe a small defender.

Guthrie and hawk are allowed to play vfl finals unless the afl team gets knocked out.

Unless they stop training it’s the truth ain’t it? They are both still training and hoping to play.

If true they must have changed the rules from years ago without me noticing

They have..it used to be like 12 games minimum now its while the afl team is still going theres no min.

So next week for vfl QF we can stack it with afl listed players but once we get to a vfl prelim if the afl team has been knocked out by then those guys cant play (note guys like humphries and mannagh as well as parfitt etc would still be eligible as have played the min no of vfl games but guys like hawkins and guthrie and probably clark wouldnt be).

Are they actually training or just on their modified programs still?

I can't remember the last time I saw either player actually partaking in a main training session

I think it's also good PR to keep talking up the positives of players who in all likelihood aren't going to be close to selection - keeps a more positive mood amongst the team and especially fans

In regards to Hawkins, part of me wouldn't be surprised if post our finals campaign it came out that Hawkins knew he was never a chance to return, but they didn't want that to distract from the teams goal or what they were trying to achieve

The point is if either were no chance they wouldn’t be bothering with the pretence of the effort they are putting in now. I don’t think this is less of a distraction than ruling a line through both of them. That would be neater.

We're stacked for small forward who can get up the ground. You'd be forcing one of Mannagh or Close out of the 22. The benefit is the difference between lets say Close and Pickett, but you'd be paying the full price to get him, especially as he is contracted and young.
Not worth it for the marginal gains on field and the huge capitol it would cost. We dont need small forwards.

Much better off going after a key forward key back and midfielders.

Kinda but not exactly
  • as long as the senior team is still playing in finals, senior listed players are eligible to play in the VFL finals, but
  • if the senior team is on a bye (such as the pre-finals bye, win the QF final etc), any player that played senior football the previous weekend is ineligible to play the next VFL final

That means none of our 23 players from yesterday can line up in next weeks VFL QF final, but if they are deemed fit enough & the coaches want to get match time into them, Hawkins, C. Guthrie & SDK could play for example
